What weird things do your cats do?

Our cat Miranda sleeps with our older daughter, but Miranda knows when it is bedtime. She goes into younger daughter's room and drinks water from daughter's cup on her nightstand. She does this loyally and regularly and drinks for a long time.

My friend says that sometimes, his cats wake up from a nap, run frantically into the next room, then go back to sleep.

runs around erratically, eats paper & cardboard, won't go outside no matter how many times I hold the door open for it, I just can't get rid of it....

Oh boy - this is going to be fun -

MoonPie is a life force vampire. Anyone who has ever watched Star Trek or Babylon 5 will know what this is. It is a creature that feeds on other beings' life force. I figured this out long ago. You see, she'd climb onto my lap and within moments I'd be asleep - totally immobilized. Hours later I'd awake feeling like sh**. Cold, achey, miserable. She'd spring from my lap like a new lamb, happy & perky. She'd sucked all of my POE (purity of essence) out of my body. This has happened to my husband, too.

Well she's lived to over 19, and still hanging in there (although age is showing) so I guess donating some of our life force has probably been worth it.

BTW my other cat, Gracie, is going to be featured as cat of the week starting on Sunday on this site:

http://www.crazyforkitties.com

This is a site targeted mainly to kids, so please take fair warning. It is run by one of my oldest, dearest friends and former roommate. The cat featured in several places on this page (Rikki - memorial slideshow included) was co-resident with MoonPie earlier in MoonPie's life.

Tom,

My cat does the water-drinking thing at night too! Only from my glass.

It never bothered me until my husband mentioned that she licks her furry cat butt too.

I invested with a water pitcher with a lid.

Cats..ya gotta love 'em.

If I don't hit the sack by 11pm, Mincus jumps on my bed and howls until I acquiess and go to sleep. It's time, he's ready and he won't sleep along.

Hitting the bathtub faucet until I let it drip is so common, I don't think anyone would consider that weird.

Leo Halsey insists on sitting on my lap, only when I am on my pc wotking. Working on the lap top..he ignores me.

And Laxie, sweet Laxie can't stop kissing me. It was great, until I too realized she lick her and the other kitties butts with the same tongue. But hey, what can you do , they own you not the other way around.

My father always says that his cats are more human than most humans.

Then his cat scarfs down a crunchy blue-bottle fly trapped in the storm window and we change the subject.

I was at my sister's and the cat (Tippy) kept walking around the kitchen sink. I found out she wanted me to turn the faucet on to a slow run so that she could drink. I'd never seen that!

My cat, Nixon (aka Puddy), from when I was little, would wait at the bottom of the stairs for us to come down. Then, she would jump up and walk on her hind legs and go for the attack! Once, she jumped on my sister's butt and clung to her robe! We laughed for days.

Chester has a plastic wrap (as in plastic from dry cleaning, plastic garbage bags) fetish and loves to chew on it. Never ingests it, thankfully, but loves to gnaw on it. Will knock over trash baskets to get at it. It seems to be when he's particularly frustrated about something?

Not one to curl up in bed with me (much to my chagrin), but when he does, it's always on the pillow just above my head.

Maxine loves water and will get up on the vanity counter in the bathroom while we're getting ready for bed and meows until you turn the water on for her. She then bats at the water, drinks from the stream of water and often just puts her entire body under the running water and plays. It's very disturbing... She also crawls up on your neck when you pick her up and wraps herself around like a collar. She also insists on getting a belly rub at least once per day, several times on the weekend when we're home.

Maya on the other hand has recently formed the habit of crawling into our basement ceiling (still don't know how she's getting in) and she can't get herself out. She started doing this after she freaked out a few weeks ago when she got her head caught on the handle of a bag of rocks (yes, a bag of rocks) and ran all over the house - she hid in the ceiling then and just keeps going back there. She also chews on plastic bags -- supermarket bags, dry cleaning bags, anything. We have to hide them from her so she doesn't get them.

One of the cats I had growing up used to stand at one of the higher steps and I'd throw a ping pong ball up to him -- he'd bat it back at me and if he missed, he'd go get the ball and bat it back to me.

Our cat, "Bruno Reilly", loved to type. He was a luddite, and only liked manual typewriters. He would entertain himself for hours (honestly) trying to catch the hammer with his left paw while typing with his right.

When the roller reached the far right side and dinged, Bruno would frantically meow until one of us would return the roller to the set position.

When exhausted from his bursts of creativity he passed-out in the bathroom sink.

So cat lovers-Was Bruno Reilly writing the great feline novel?

Miranda sometimes howls at her toys in the middle of the night.

Her latest toy is my daughter's belt. She will carry it up or down the stairs, letting the buckle clunk on each step.

She sometimes sleeps ON my daughter's head. My daughter is not happy about it but hasn't figured out how to get Miranda to stop.

Miranda is very fat and lazy and hardly moves all day or night. And she's always hungry. We measure her food so she doesn't gain any more weight.

I think cats seem human because they are so different from each other.

Lil B, Gracie hides in the basment walls when she's scared. (or just when she doesn't feel like hanging out with the humans.) She's getting really fat though so I think that's going to have to stop soon, or she's going to get stuck in there like Winnie the Pooh.

(other cat is old, hyperthyroid, and terribly skinny - and it's impossible to put only one cat on a diet. Gracie gets to stay fat until after MoonPie goes to the wild cat hunting grounds.)

Our cat, Chloe, likes to bring us her "string" (a green shoe string) every nite at 9:45! At first we thought it was coincidental that it was the same time every nite, then it started to appear she has her own routine., as I am sure most cats do.She greets us at the door, and has her own bed, and toy box, and two barbie dolls, whereas if you say "fix Barbies hair" she will teeze it with her mouth a give it a 1980's 'poof' look! No joke. She had four other siblings, but they all passed on., so we spoil her to the utmost degree. CATS RULE!

After my late Siamese cat Lewkie passed on at age 22, his son Rocky who was 2 years younger stopped
eating and passed on 2 weeks later. This was after trying everything to get him to eat, including IV feeding. When Rocky finally succumbed on a Sunday afternoon, his mother, Katie laid her body over Rocky's head and stayed in that position for hours.

On a brighter note, our new cat Puff Daddy will only drink water from the fishbowl or from a tall glass placed next to the food bowl.

What a sad and touching story about Lewkie, Rocky and Katie. How amazing that Lewkie lived to 22!

So sorry for the loss of your boys.

And to think there are people that actually believe animals don't have feelings.

Two of my girls are going to be 22 this year. Baby, one of them, has to drink from my glass. One of our younger ones, Bart, used to always play with her spider toy in the bathroom and howl like she was in pain. We had to tell the landlord that we don't lock her in there, she just prefers that room. Bart also loves to be in the bathroom with us for showers. She sits on the toilet waiting for you to be done to get petted. And she picks up the dry food with her paw to eat. Of course she tends to drop it out of her mouth over the water dish fouling the water with bloated food.

My late cat, Elizabeth, talked. She "said" Hello, out, milk, and no, and made those sounds in appropriate contexts. She lived to be twenty years old. When I told my children that Elizabeth could speak, I could see that they were thinking that Mom was ready for the funny farm.

Our cat Pumpkin likes to chew on the corners of boxes, eats broccoli and pushes the water bowl all over the kitchen to get the water to move before he takes a drink.

Pie will roll over on his back for tummy rubbing and then start to droll all over the place and will only drink water out of the bathtub.

I had a cat once that would play fetch with me for hours. I would throw the round part of a keychain and he would bring it back every time.

Lizziecat, is your name here on MOL after your smart old cat Elizabeth?

This is pretty funny reading this - some people have mentioned some of the weird things my cats have done too. Like hanging out in the bathroom during a shower, tossing water all over the kitchen floor, and playing with Barbies. My daughter used to get really ticked off at Gracie because Gracie would bite her barbies on the hair and drag them off.

Wharf,
My cat does no harm to your dog. Though Floyd would be entirely justified as Hudson tries to intimidate him at every encounter. The cat that torments poor old Hudson is the block's feline thug, Coco. That cat has his own extortion ring going--where all the neighborhood cats and some of the dogs have to provide regular tributes of canned tuna, in oil, or else.

HRH Gediminas, the (rather portly) Lithuanian Wondercat eats - no, demands - romaine lettuce leaves. The leaves must be held by a conveniently located functionary with opposable thumbs so that he can get a good grip. Failure to provide him with this particular dietary supplement on his somewhat arbitrary schedule (anytime you walk past the refrigerator) results in ear-splitting complaints, followed by much shredding of the rubber gasket thinggie on the refrigerator door.

Really.

Tom, I think cats seem so much like humans because they are strange, quirky, and weird--and that is why we love them. Each one has an indelible and unique personality. As do dogs--but dogs are a bit more limited in their range of eccentricities.

Our cats have done the water things listed above--it is fun to read about others doing it. Our little one, Megan, now gone, used to jump over 4 feet in the air from a crouch to catch paper balls, and then pushed off the wall to gain another foot or two in height. She would catch the ball upside down in full layout, flip over and land on her feet, paper ball in hewr mouth. She would do this over and over until we got tired of tossing paper balls.

Our big boy, Micah (18 pounds of lean mean purring machine) is trained like a dog to sit, come closer, and turn around--all with hand commands.

The cat on my lap likes to read MOL and will occassionally suggest episodes from his daily life to include in what he has come to think of as his personal blog.

Before him, we had a cat who like to leap onto the down-positioned lid of the toilet bowl and keep human family members company while they were taking their bath. One day the lid was left up and .... From then on this cat learned to look before she leapt.

You ever have a kid pick up Cheerios with a wet finger? Agnes does this. She licks her paw, gets a crunchy stuck, and eats it off her paw. She won't eat normally.
She also sits butt down, back straight, with her front paws inbetween her legs... as human as a cat could sit. Its hard to describe but its not normal.
Sophie is perfectly normal.
Bess used to go along on the dog walk every night.
Mittens learned to piss in the toilet all on her own. Never took a dump, just pissed. This was the same time we were having our living room rebuilt (some crazy 1950's renovations had to be reversed) and my mom finally confronted the contractor about not flushing... but it turned out it was the cat.

8-ball sleeps on me. Not next to me, close to me, but on me.

If we're not awake and he wants OUT, he'll conduct airstrikes from the headboard. Thus far, I've awakened before he starts swatting the water glass.

I know the consensus of cat owners is "indoor only", and I respect that. Unfortunately, "Bauble" does not. If we do not allow him outdoors he assaults our persons and belongings until the lock is thrown back and the door opened. It is torturous when he is a sick kitty and "OUT" is non-negotiable.

He can open drawers and sniff out the most secret hiding places. The cat-nip is suspended from a clip in a doorway (if the cops ever come by, hopefully they'll be able to tell the difference).

He is an artiste, a treasure, a personality. A huge PITA with whiskers. He's tellin

Joe-

Go ahead and blame the victim, all you want. His lawyer will be contacting you, shortly!

For the record: Coco, your cat and Cookie are the axis of evil, here in the box.

Ask any dog in the neighborhood and they will tell you this gang of feline ruffians has left a trail of fear, destruction and hairballs in their wake!

The cat who lives in the same house as I do likes to sit on a chair next to me when the family is eating dinner. His head will turn from one human to the other so he can politely maintain eye contact with whomever is talking at the time. Unfortunately, he has yet to join in the dinner conversation. I would love to know what he is thinking about isues affecing the household of which he is so much a part.

By the way, he does not eat at the dinner table, his solid food and water bowl are kept firmly on the floor. He will usually eat either just before or just after the rest of us do, depending on his mood.
