I need to add a few things to all thats being written and said about this team. Last year 5 seniors graduated and at the beginning of the season many coaches and fencers around the state
thought they had a chance to upend CHS because of the many seemingly apparent holes in our lineup. Little did they know how good our new kids were.

Junior A'sha Brumant became CHS's "A" strip saber fencer and along the way has established herself as a force on the state and national level.
Juniors Kirsten Lynch and Deanna Rakowsky
were total unknowns before this year replacing two good senior foil fencers who last year joined Abigail Caparros-Janto in winning the state foil championship. A tough act to follow.
Yet, Kirsten, Deanna and Abby became the best HS girls foil squad in the state this year capturing all of the major state trophies and propelling the team to it's third championship in a row and the seventh in the last 8 years!
Good news for CHS, A'sha, Abby, Kirsten and Deanna all return next year for a run at a four- pete.
Lastly, Laura Valle and Martha Drattler. CHS's senior epee fencers. All year opposition coaches have felt that our epee line was our weak link. They've based their hopes to upset Columbia on sweeping our epees. Well, last nite was no exception. Bernards HS had a nationally ranked A strip epeeist backed by 2 younger, but very good fencers. Martha and Laura never succumed to the pressure or the hype, they just went out and dominated. Our epee squad won 7 of 9 bouts and were the major reason the state championship remains at Columbia for one more year. Martha, if you read this, Keep the trophy for awhile, there's no place to put it at the school anyway. You won it, you and Laura and Alex and Molly and Courtney deserve it. Thanks!!

Thanks for everything ladies, thanks for supporting my daughter, thanks for being honorable (Kirsten), Thanks for being mentally tough, thanks for the 10 major trophies that won't be displayed cause there's no place to put them and a special thanks and lots of love to Nicole, our fencing coach who just got married (last Sat.!) and is leaving CHS to begin her new life with her husband. I think the high school and the community will remember all of you well now and in the future.

George,
The beautiful thing about Columbia Fencing has always been the team spirit. Until, of course, you came on the scene. Your divisive ways have been apparent for a while, but I think it's disgusting of you to mention all but a couple of fencers from last night. It seems to me that Meredith Steck and Sara Linarducci (amongst others) deserve thanks because it's their performance during the past season that brought the team to the finals. One night does not define a fencer or a person. And while you have never been known as a team kind of guy, even you should be able to tell the difference between a team victory and an individual one. Who on earth do you think you are to tell any person that they deserve to keep the team's trophy?

I suspect I'm not alone in my puzzlement over how Barbara Glassman could manage to interpret George Janto's congratulations as divisive.

Of course, my reaction is premised on the assumption that it's still legal in this school district to acknowledge individual achievement.

Sorry I wasn't clear ... George managed to acknowlege all but two of the fencers. My point is that this is a team effort and all fencers needed to be mentioned. By the way, this is not the first time he's done this. He's consistent in his hurtful ways

I know in my heart that this was vindictive on George's part ... not important if i'm agreed with or not.

Can anyone explain to me why Nicole Mustili was not named coach of the year by the News Record?
Her girls team was 20-0 this season.

She definately should -- but, I think you are referring to today's Ledger which did not name Nicole as coach of the year. Nicole is a terrific coach and she should have received this.

Nicole IS outstanding, but the coach who was named Coach of the Year is battling cancer while coaching his team, among the rest of his responsibilities. Understandable why he was chosen.
