Whew! Just got in, two nights late, but safe & sound... Yup. I'm one of the wretches who got caught in the rash of flight cancellations caused by that stupid snowstorm you had the other day. Was anybody up here inconvenienced by it? I heard it was just a couple of inches, but judging from the way folks on the shuffleboard courts in Boca were reacting to calls from up North on their cells, you'd have thought it was the Blizzard of '98... Anyhow, for me, myself, personally, being delayed wasn't really such a big deal at all. I read about my flight crapping out online, informed The Oracle that I'd be staying on a day or two longer, poured myself another Dos Equis, and limped back out to the shuffleboard complex. (Yeah, I adopted a fake handicap while down there -- sort of a "Mummy dragging his leg" thing -- lame enough to draw lots of sympathy from the wrinkled set, but nothing that would affect my play. So, to put it gently, I more than covered expenses, heh-heh...) Gotta say: The Oracle's really got The Life down there. Party, Party, Party! During the day he's either playing footsie with a couple of local Merry Widows in his fenced-in Jaccuzzi, or else he's off to Miami Beach, tearing up and down Ocean Avenue on that custom Phantom cycle of his. And the nights can be downright nutty: spur-of-the-moment visits by all sorts of interesting dead people and wandering spirits, interested in a nightcap or some professional help, or maybe a couple of the Muse Sisters might drop by for a marathon game of strip-Jenga, or, like last Friday, when The Oracle and a couple of his old frat brothers flew (literally) down to Havana, set fire to some really big bags of camel poop on the front steps of the Presidential Palace, rang the doorbell, and yelled "Donde Esta Che?" when Fidel came storming out in his spectator pumps to stomp out the flames. Good times, man... Of course, even though I was the absolute perfect house guest, I knew The Oracle would never let me stay down there permanently, and so rather than wear out my welcome, I bid the old guy a hearty farewell, and journeyed back here to SOMA, where I guess things have been pretty dull for a while, right? (OK, I admit it: I completely stopped checking this site after a day or two down there... just too much easy money sitting there on the plaza...) So... Anybody wanna fill me in (briefly) on the latest tidings from the world of MOL? Well??? -S. BTW: Oddly enough, The Oracle told me that the Blizzard of '98 really wasn't so bad after all. Turns out that once the snow ended, folks just attached runners to all the carriages, and the horses just pulled 'em along as if nothing had happened. Just another case of sensation-hungry media blowing a story all out of proportion... Oh, and The Oracle said he's gonna start posting here again soon, in lieu of voting. Evidently he's really pissed off about some of the local doings I told him about while I was down there. Should be fun... |

Uhm, it was the Blizzard of '88 btw. 1888 that is. Otherwise welcome back, and I miss the Oracle here on MOL, badly. And where did Oracle and his fraternity brohters get the dog droppings? I heard there aren't any dogs left in Cuba. The populace have eaten them all. Nothing like a roast poodle for dinner I always say. |

Well that answers the question about why MOL's been so boring... no SODA to stir things up! |

Greetings and blessings upon you, denizens of MOL. As ineptly reported by my (thankfully) ex-house-guest Soda, I have indeed returned through the Ether to once again appear on these threads, if only for now to set some things aright which are in such great need of same. Most recently: RobertK, you have missed by only the slimmest of margins the honor of being fondly nicknamed by me "Statboy of MOL". For though you have correctly pointed out another example of Soda's typical misquoting of my pronouncements to him (hence my decision to once again take full management of my statements here), you were, in your otherwise commendable zeal for the accurate, yourself errant in your reading of his post, which did, in fact, correctly identify the content of those paper sacks as camel (rather than the non-existant canine) dung. My boon companions and I arrived in Cuba by way of a short detour to the Nefud Desert, where such offal is highly prized by the locals as both a cooking fuel and a building material. Our little prank at the Palacio Presidencial did occur roughly as in Soda's antic retelling of it, but it hardly stands out among some of our more amusing escapades. Perhaps, when in better mood, I may offer you one or two... Indeed, RobertK, The "Great" Blizzard of March 11-14, 1888 was quite a fierce storm, killing hundreds of mortals in many parts of this country. It received from the press the quaint appellation "Great White Hurricane", and, if my memory serves, was actually created by Kami-Kazi, one the wind gods, as a playful but somewhat overly enthusiastic attempt to encourage funding for a municipal Sub-way System in New York, which was built some years later. My Dear Andrea, thank you for your generosity of heart and welcoming words. Till next time... -The Oracle of MOL

What's been going on? There was some bunking, a lawsuit against people who read things without proper authorization, some talk about American Idol, someone is seeking beehives, Civis has DSL problems, DeborahG is thinking about buying a laptop, Chrissy McIntyre needs to take a photo of a Volkswagen Fox by Friday, Greenetree's furnace is acting weird, and some other stuff. |

Man, there's nothing like sleeping in your very own bed after being away for a while. Now, I don't mean to imply a lack of appreciation for the accommodations down in Boca, but my own particular rack sags in just the right places, so I can do all the horizontal stretching, joint-cracking, fetal curling, and ritual side-to-side tossing I need to when it's nightey-night... so I'm feelin' okey-dokey right now. But what a bummer! The Oracle's already started posting, and couldn't even wait for me to wake up before he started bashing me -- even though (hah!) I was talking about OUR Blizzard of 1996 (remember?), not that other one. I made up all that stuff about runners on carriages just to piss him off in case he was lurking... It's so HIM. Now that he's semi-retired, he loves to pontificate and ramble on about the old days when he was a Big Deal. And, of course, he takes every opportunity to put me down, even though he knows I've got contractual dibs (part of my severance package) on a couple weeks of winter R&R with him in Boca every year till 2012... You'd think I was still working for him... And HEY! Big O! Andrea was welcoming ME back, not YOU! -s. BTW: My sidewalk's clear and dry, and I didn't even have to shovel? Wow! Okay, now I'm gonna spend some time reading up on recent MOL doin's, then on to some work, and then later maybe try a PL to my old boss to smooth things over with him. Meantime, thanks to BobK, Andrea, Strings, and anybody else that wanted to wish me a welcome back... You guys are the best. |

It was a big storm, not in amount of precipitation but in the difficulties it created. The temperature dropped very fast, leaving a sheet of ice all over and dry, dusty snow on top. Lots of people left early, hoping to skip the problems, and they got the worst of it, and I'll bet they contributed to the problems. (Not that they could have known better.) As luck had it, I waited until about 5:30 to head home, and things were fine for me. Many roads had record numbers of accidents. |

Actually, that was the Blizzard of '96. I know because my youngest was a baby. Also, we bought a snowblower that fall and then never used it for three or four years, so I know that there was nothing even approaching a blizzard in '98. |

That's a whole 'nother kind of bunk, dontcha think? ...Unless, of course, that's either your response to my request for updates (in which case, I'd have to assume that either some form of alien intelligence has take hold of certain MOLers, and totally reversed the valences of their brains) or your way of telling me that you've decided to entice me into bunking with you by displaying your coquettish sense of humor (in which case I don't play hard to get)... |
