It's not just for character. Truly, I could live without Drug Fa (which is what we call it). Pathmark's prices are just as good or better. But if you haven't been to Tabatchnik's or the bakery, you should try them. Try the hamentashen, would ya!? Sometimes, appearances are not the most important thing. If they put in a Trader Joe's in place of Drug Fa, I'd be happy, as long as they kept the other two places, but that's highly unlikely. |

Mark Fuhrman, are you a commercial real estate developer? Just curious, for a variety of reasons.... |

The Millburn Mall is now owned by the Lightstone Group. The Mall is 66,615 Sq Ft. They are offering for rent the following: Unit A06 - 5,800 Unit A07 - 2,913 Unit A08 - 3,000 Unit B13 - 850 (contiguous spaces above can be combined) Any idea as to which storefronts these are? I'm a fan of Syd's, Sonny Amsters, and that asian market next to Syd's...I also go to Drug Fair periodically. Some of the stores in the mall have been there since it was built in the 60s. |

Kevin, the Asian market is no more, last I went in there they were just selling flowers. I would love any supermarket there! Trader Joe's would be great, but so would any other new, clean store. I don't mind Drug Fair but I don't often have reason to go there. |

Living in S.O., the only reasons we visit Millburn Mall are Syds's, Sonny Amster's, and Tabatchnik's. If they're still there after the improvements are made, we'll still patronize the place. If not, it'd take some other truly unique restaurant or merchant to get me to shlepp over there. -s. BTW: (A) Those who think that the place isn't safe after dark will undoubtedly still avoid it once it's gussied up, since it'll still be in exactly the same location, and (2) Those of you anxious for a Panera, Starbucks, or other cookiecutter joint are half of the pathetic and tragic equation for the ongoing plastification of America. The other half of the equation are souless, quick-buck-hungry property owners, space speculators, and food conglomerates preying on the public's sheeplike lack of discrimination or imagination; coupled with our evident loss of both historical sense of place and appreciation for independent effort, this equation assures more Starbucks and Panera's, and fewer Sonny Amsters and Tabatchniks. As has been said before, be careful what you wish for. |

Soda, if I was part of the "pathetic and tragic equation for the ongoing plastification of America," why would I live here? If that were the case I would live in a McMansion in Arizona or somewhere at about half the price I paid for my house here... I just prefer cleaner, well-run, well-managed stores over junky 40-year-old places, and so I happen to like Starbucks...so do about 100 million other people, many of whom live in towns such as Princeton, Ridgewood, Westfield, Millburn, South Orange, etc -- hardly "plastic" places. I also happen to like the roast beef sandwiches from Panera...and my point was that if the proprietors of the Millburn Mall want to boost traffic, perhaps they might consider bringing the facility up to date, which includes bringing in new tenants with broader appeal. Who says Tabatchniks can't co-exist with a mainstream place? |

Zoesky1: Don't get me wrong: I've nothing against cleanliness, weatherproof buildings, or smooth asphalt. And Panera's Sierra Turkey Sandwiches are okay, as is a Starbucks Hot Chocolate. But in taking my last post so personally, you beg the question -- which has far less to do with where the "100 million" of you (my guess is more like 200 million, but why split hairs) live, or how much you paid for your home -- than it does with how you think (or, more properly, do NOT think). Denying that your demand for "cleaner, well-run, well-managed stores over junky 40-year-old places" doesn't unwittingly contribute to the demise of many irreplaceable American retailers, eateries, etc., is not only myopic, but sad. -s. BTW: I'm taking a guess here: You're either under 40, or a Republican, or both, right??? |

I love Tabatchniks, the bakery, and Syds. Tabatchniks has the best pastrami sandwiches I've had in years and the bakery has absolutely incredible rye bread. My kids love the cookies there. They also love going to Syds and sitting up at the counter and getting and hot dog and fries. I even like going to the Drug Fair, which reminds me of the five and dime type place that I used to shop at in Brooklyn. It would be a terrible shame if those places were lost. How about the Springfield Avenue Association recruiting Tabatchniks, the bakery, Drug Fair, and Syds for Springfield Avenue? They'd make a mini old-fashioned downtown all by themselves and would give lots of people a reason to go over to Springfield Avenue. |

Tom, while the baked goods aren't bad at the Millburn Mall bakery, I have to be in the right mood before I'll dare to set foot in that shop. Displays of breathtaking rudeness, from both sides of the counter, are on full display along side the bread. It's a weird place. |

Anyone- How would Starbuck's hurt MM? i really dislike having to go to SO or Millburn for my coffee. MM is in a fantastic location and needs an anchor tenant who will advertise and bring in destination shoppers- Starbuck's does so without strongly competing with an existing tenant. Of course, Trader Joe's trumps everyone, including Starbuck's, in this area. |

Maybe there will be a Starbucks at the new mall where the driving range is. Trader Joe operates with very high sales per square foot to support their pricing. The last thing they are going to do is open a store that might canabilize sales from their exisiting locations, although it is nice to dream. I do wish, however, that Drug Fair would fix the burned out letter on their sign since they are the anchor tenant at Millburn Mall. |

We really aren't very close to their nearest locations (Florham Park and Westfield) so I have trouble understanding that a location in or near Maplewood would canabalize sales from those sites. I would visit a TJ's in this area MUCH more often than I go to those more distant locations. |

There's no need to travel to South Orange and Millburn for coffee. Net Nomads on Springfield at Prospect has the best coffee in the area, and they're nice people. |

I buy coffee beans from Zabars., http://www.zabars.com. $5.98 a pound can't be beat! It measures up to anyone's standards, too. They sell 10,000 of coffee per week RETAIL, just from their one store, and I believe it is mostly from people who walk in. |
