My wife and I just bought a house in Maplewood. She is looking into teaching positions within Maplewood beginning in the '05/'06 school year. She has been teaching 1st and 2nd grade in NYC for four years and will be receiving her graduate degree in Learning Disabilities from Coloumbia Teacher's College in July. While she is going through the normal channels for applying, are there any contacts or suggestions?

I could be wrong, but right now might not be the best time to be looking for a teaching position in Maplewood/South Orange. They are currently laying off custodians and the transportation director, and cutting French in the middle school. Other positions are being downsized or eliminated, but I can't recall exactly what they are.

Check other threads under Education which reference the bugdet for more info.

Current job postings are listed here:

Personally, I would not want to teach in the same district that I lived in. (personal opinion)

You may also want to check job openings in West Orange, Livingston, Millburn, Springfield, Summit, Union... all towns within a super easy commute to South Orange/Maplewood.

Nevertheless, there is a rather high percentage (something like 30%) of our teaching staff that DOES live in the two towns. I don't know for sure, but I think this may be somewhat unusual and I wonder why it is so?

Because they're great towns to live in and to send your kids to school in?

There is nothing better than teaching in the same place you live. It's wonderful to be part of a community as both a resident and a teacher. I love it when I run into kids from current and previous classes and enjoy being in sync with the community in which I am teaching.

Cathy, I agree with you completely, but your response made me realize that I had not asked the question in the way intended. What I really meant was "Why is it so unusual?" as opposed to "Why so many?"

I didn't mean to put down the two towns. I love where I teach.
I suppose if I already lived here, and THEN got hired, I might feel differently (about working and iving in the same town) . However, I was working here first and then moved to West Orange, from Bergen County (via Springfield). ( I also do not have my own children, which would/could also impact my decision).

My sister teaches in the same district where she lives, and finds good and bad. Certainly seeing former students is nice (most times), but it is a bit awkward having parents attempt conferences in the deli line at the Stop and Shop.

There were two recent articles in the paper about the high number of teachers who graduated CHS and came back to teach in town. I think one of the articles was about Clinton School. Not sure about the other. I know a handful of teachers who live and work in the same town.

If you don't mind a challenge, other places you might want to look are the inner cities Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Orange and Elizabeth.
