Good idea, Tom. Not unlike any other cause we all contribute to, no one really knows where the money goes. Wendy, thanks for sight link |

If you think that one person can eat a box of Thin Mints, then you'll really finish the Pinatas quickly. There are only 14 cookies in each box! (Similar to Samoas.) |

A friend in Cincinnati mailed me a box of Pinatas last year. I didn't think they were all that. The company that distributes to Maplewood never sells the new/creative cookies, so i stick by the Samoas (which i think the other baker may call Caramel Delights) as my faves.

Thin Mints. I love them in the freezer with a glass of milk on the side. |

Maybe a troop leader can confirm this, but I think the actual troop only gets 35 cents or so from each box sold. As Tom and Carrie suggest, if you just give the girl scout troop the 3.50, and not take the cookies... then they get to keep the whole amount, no? Personally, I like the Samoas - esp. when frozen! Thin Mints is a close 2nd. I tried the Double Choc chip this year... what do you all think of them. Not bad, but would be great if they were soft! |

I am a troop leader so I can tell you that, this year, our troops get 60 cents per box sold. Older girl (Middle/High school aged) troops can opt out of incentive prizes and get 65 cents per box. I believe that the council gets about $1 and the rest goes to the baker. However, I think that the national girl scout organization somehow gets something directly from the bakers also, so ultimately that also comes out of the $3.50 in some manner. |

When we sell cookies, we often have customers who say "keep the change" or give us extra money. Yes, that amount all stays with the troop. However, I can also tell you that there are plenty of people who buy the cookies for the cookies. They may be charitably disposed to Girl Scouts, but they buy the cookies because they like them. This is one reason that I like this fundraiser ... I don't feel like I'm asking someone to buy something they don't want just to support a worthy cause. |

Ahhhh lets get a little CONTROVERSY here! Samoas and Caramel Delights are both the same cookies... and you are right, Samoas and from Little Brownie and Caramel Delights are from ABC... But, not knowing, I asked a girl scout leader in Cambridge Mass why they were now called Caramel Delights... she informed me that the district found the name Samoas offensive and went with the Caramel Delight version! Perhaps only in Cambridge Mass. What the heck is in those Necco Wafers anyway. --John |

I gave my daughter a Necco wafer when she was about seven, which is the age when kids love all candy, no matter what. I asked if she liked it, and she said, "yeah, it's great. It tastes just like chalk." I don't like them, but I have an affection for them, since I used to work in the bike shop directly across the street from the Necco factory. The air often smelled very sweet. I used to eat breakfast in the luncheonette with the factory workers. I was 19 and 20 years old. |

Yes but Necco wafers are perfect for decorating gingerbread houses - just don't eat them! |

Another vote for thin mint. All 40 boxes I somehow ended up with from my niece who just dropped them off!!! And the short breadish ones! I was told the scouts sell the cookies in front of Kings in Maplewood Center. |

I would kill someone for a Samoa. extuscan: Is this true, because I think I purchased some Caramel delights a year ago or so, and I didn't think they were nearly as good as the samoas. I had feared that the recipe has changed. At least the hope is still alive that I can find some more of those tastey cookies before I have to kill someone. |

sac - thanks for the info --- the troop profit hasn't really gone up much. It was 35 cents when I was a scout back in the 1980's! (Then again, the cookies were $1.20 or so a box!) |

Samoas are great. So are Necco wafers - especially the chocolate ones and the ones that taste like licorice. My dad grew up in Cambridge very near the Necco factory so maybe it's genetic. I know my grandmother worked in a factory for a while - for all I know it might have been that one. Anyway I love them. |

Around here you will get Samoas. Caramel Delights are from the same baker (ABC) as Pinatas. Judging from sales this year, Samoas seem to be outstripping Thin Mints for the first time in my memory. |

Are the Samoas the beige ones with the carmel & chocolte stripes? |
