This Saturday, March 19th, South Mountain Peace Action is sponsoring "Be About Peace Day" in Maplewood: a local call for peace on the second anniversary of the War in Iraq. The event is free and open to children and adults of all ages. From 1:00 to 5:00 pm Arts and Crafts for Peace activities will be offered downstairs in Maplewood Memorial Library. Local artists and crafts people will assist children and adults in about 10 different arts and crafts projects including canvas door-hangers, beads, posters, sculptures, rock-painting, quilting, casting and t-shirt painting. The new "Be About Peace" t-shirts will be available, as will our "Be About Peace" lawn signs. From 7:00 to 9:00 pm we will reconvene at the Ethical Culture Society at 516 Prospect Street for an evening of music and poetry and an open forum where all members of the public are invited to speak. There will be a report on the responses of our two Senators to SMPA's petition asking them to Speak Out Against the War in Iraq and to work for an international solution led by the United Nations and a rapid return home of US soldiers. The evening events will culminate with a Candlelight Vigil and the dedication of a peace memorial in honor of the American soldiers and Iraqi civilians who have died in the war. The memorial will also be dedicated to Betty Duffey of South Orange, former co-chair of South Mountain Peace Action who recently passed away. For further information, please call or write Paul Surovell, chair, South Mountain Peace Action, at 973-763-9493 or paul4sure@aol.com.

Paul, were you the guy who was in town this weekend handing out info on the event, and giving away Be About Peace signs? I had wanted to get a sign, but when I passed by you, or whoever was there, was involved in helping some poor woman who had fallen and cut up her face. Hope she's O.K. How can I get a sign for my yard (now that the snow's all gone)? |

Dear Meandtheboys, Yes, that was me, Andy Gyroy of South Mountain Peace Action, and Jerry Ryan who happened to be there just when the woman tripped on the curb near our table in front of the bank. We called the Rescue Squad and they cleaned up her cuts and scrapes within about 10 minutes, and she was on her way. We'll have lots of "Be About Peace" lawn signs on Saturday in the basement of Maplewood Memorial Library from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, in connection with our Be About Peace Day arts-and-crafts actiivities. We'll also have new "Be About Peace" T-shirts which have the same logo, in red-white-and-blue, as well as the traditional black-and-gray. If you can't get to the Library on Saturday email me at paul4sure@aol.com or call me at 973-763-9493 and I'll bring you a lawn sign next week.
