I couldn't have said it better Tom. I took my 5 and 2 year old boys to the Sunday show and we all had a ball! What a great introduction for my boys to one day going to a Broadway show. It was also great to see the huge crowd in attendance. From the set design to the talent and heart of ALL the kids in the cast and orchestra....just wonderful to see! Oh! The dog was adorable! BRAVO!!!!!! |

my 5 (a a half) year old LOVED it. He was thrilled that he actually knows Annie and so cute when he jumped up to give her a standing ovation. I was impressed (and I have the attention span of a flea). I heard him later in the tub singing the tunes -- he said his favorite was the one the homeless people (under the bridge) sang??? Anyone know what song that is? He couldn't remember how it went. I don't know if I kept a program. |

algebra2 The song you're looking for is indeed "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover". If you ever want to get the CD soundtrack, get the broadway version as the 1982 movie version does not include this tune (the broadway version also features the tune "NYC", which is not in the movie either). If your son liked the show, it's a great idea to buy or rent the 1982 movie - the broadway show is in my view better, but it is not available on DVD/VHS and the movie is still pretty good, particularly because the cast is so great (Carole Burnett, Albet Finney, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters are fantastic). My 7 and 8 year old daughters loved the show and were thrilled to watch our friends' daughter, Julianna Carlson, play Mrs. Hannigan. I also loved it, but I'm partial because Annie is one of my favorite shows of all times. |

Thanks -- I was thinking of getting him the soundtrack -- I'm wondering if it's on iTunes. He's seen the movie a few times -- he kept commenting during the play on what was "different" from the movie. Mrs Hannigan was my favorite! She was great! It's so fun for the kids to see older kids they know "in real life". |

Going to take the kids this Sunday afternoon. Can anyone tell me what time we should be there? 15 minutes early? 5 minutes early? I assume the "theater" is small enough that all seats are "good" seats? |

You should get there 15 to 20 early. General addmission, and the thater is bigger than you might think. Good seats, but if you have small ones and they sit behind a big head... |

What a great show. I'm really impressed. I seem to remember my high school productions were not nearly so well done. Nor do I recall that many boys trying out. Some of these kids are really fantistic. The girl who plays Annie has a great voice. And Daddy Warbucks, really great. Actually even shaved his head. Again, I'm very impressed. Was really lovin' the dog and was a bit disappointed to find out he is a "professional." Great job. Looking forward to next year's production. Great beginner theater experience for my little ones. |

I too was very impressed by the quality of the show - the singing, the sets, the whole thing. It was very heartening to see so much talent and unbridled enthusiasm right here in our community. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to truly enjoy the show because I was sitting next to my 5 year old son who had an endless litany of questions. Are the people real alive? Are they children? How come they look the same size as the adults? Is the dog real alive? How did it know how to do that? Is it nighttime? Why is the light only on her? When is the show going to be over? Is this the bad part? (meaning the orphanage part, which he didn't like) Are her parents dead? Why is she mean? (referring to Miss Hannigan) Why did she (Annie) leave the dog behind? Why is everyone leaving? (at intermission), Did they get out of jail? (the would-be parents, upon taking their bows at the end), ... You get the picture. So, do you answer the questions and help your child understand the story and the mechanics of a play, or do you tell him to be quiet and just watch? I answered, on the theory that he needs some help learning to follow a staged performance - the actors are real people playing roles in a pretend story that takes place in the past..., but by the end of the show, I had a huge headache. We won't even talk about all the eating sounds, though I admit that I resorted to munching quietly myself, if only to alleviate my stress. Perhaps you can tell that he never watches TV and has seen only a handful of mostly animated films. My friend suggested that the next time I take him to see a play, I should borrow/rent the movie of the same story so that he comes prepared, kind of like reading the libretto before an opera. Who would have thunk? |

Sorry, jasper, but your story made me smile. Parenting is challenging and rewarding, and sometimes, it's hard to figure which it's more of. |

Jasper, that is exactly why I didn't take R! I wanted to see it but couldn't face answering her questions. We do go to the Papermill children's shows though since all of the kids are young and I'm not as worried about disturbing anyone. Next up is her favorite...Cinderella! If you guys are interested in any of them let me know, we usually go to a few every season. |

Jasper -- my son LOVES the movie Annie. So he wanted to point out each and every part which was different from the movie. Last night he (son) had a dream that it was Rooster's birthday and they were going back in time but had trouble b/c the batteries in the time portal were running out of juice. He loved Rooster -- that's who he wants to play (in our three person musical). |

Yes, Tom, it sure is a lot of both, and it certainly helps to see the humor in the situation. Wendyn, I wasn't that concerned about disturbing others (though I did, of course, urge him to ask me quietly), since there were plenty of kids and all the ambient noise (including eating) that goes with them. Still, trying to talk in a voice that is loud enough for your child to hear (What did you say?!), but quiet enough to be polite to others is very tiresome. So, how much does Papermill charge for the (dis)pleasure of exposing your children to theater? My son would definitely enjoy Cinderella. I'll bring the Tylenol. alg, that is so funny. See, now that negates my friend's idea of coming prepared. Your son probably did just as much talking as my son, only from a different perspective. They just can't seem to stop "flapping their gums", as my husband so kindly puts it. |

Papermill is $10 a ticket. Shows are Sat and Sun usually at 10am. We'll definitely be at Cinderella, and maybe at some of the others. As long as she isn't running around (which she did at the first show I took her to) I'll be happy. |

Okay, call me crazy, but I'd be up for Cinderella. Maybe he'll have less questions with a classic fairy tale. I'll email you. |

Before we go to a show, I try anticipating as much as I can of my now 5 year old daughter's theater experience and reactions, from the emotionally tricky parts (she's adopted and we've so far referred to her Chinese orphanage as the "baby home") to her likely biggest questions (why would the Police chase the homeless people away or make Annie go back to the orphanage), and prepare for it with her in advance. Last year, it was very helpful to inform her before the show (and then remind her repeatedly when she became frightened) that all the Peter Pan characters--and especially the Pirates--were just "big kids pretending". This year, after a few of these preparatory discussions, I felt ready for a quiet(er) time in the audience. However, there is only so much that even I could predict--who would have thought she'd become obsessed with the kids, especially little Molly, and insist every time they appeared onstage that they weren't kids from "the big school" (CHS), because they were too small/short!!! And then there was the recurrent proclamation that the mean people had to go right to jail (why didn't I see that one in advance, since her idea these days for most wrongdoers, excepting herself, is essentially life imprisonment?!?). She anticipated Ms. H's eventual fate almost from her first appearance onstage and then insisted upon it every time she engaged in a subsequent evil deed. Thankfully, I was able to mostly remain amused, especially when I saw the woman next to us smiling warmly after hearing a few of her comments. The best part, however, was when my daughter admonished me for quietly singing along a couple of times!!! |

My kid's favorite line when I start accompanying the radio: Me: Lalalala Him: Hey Mom, Who sings that song? Me: Oh I it's Blah Blah Blah He: Let's keep it that way.
