I thought it might be a good idea to get a list going of any local pub, coffehouse or any other venue that features live music. Reviews, recommendations, what to expect, time to sign up, contacts, equipment available, the general vibe...anything really that would help musicians get to know the area and where to play before heading out on a World Tour.
I know this is a lot of information to put down, but it would be nice to have a list and description of the local establishments from people who have played there. I'd also love to see more music threads attacking any musician issue... Technical, gear, songwriting....

I have to agree with you. It's always a good idea to support local venues that invite musicians to practice their craft. Please add www.heres2thearts.com to your list.

We offer live entertainment seven nights a week. BTW, in addition to our permanent, fully equipped musical stage, we have now added a second 60-seat stage setting for plays and live theatre. Our space is also available for private parties, and both business and public meetings.

Thank you for your interest in "LIVE" entertainment...

A big thumbs-up for H2A. It's a great place to chill out, hear live music, view some great art, and have a snack.

I also love The Dancing Goat, on S.O. Ave.

Grammy-award winning percussionist Glen Velez this Saturday. Oddly, thus far there are more ticket reservations from NY, PA and CT than Maplewood.

WHat about places where you can get an hour or so to play - possibly even for a stipend?

I'm not sure, but I think I've heard of a magical land in which dancing musicians are paid with stipends. I think they are made of candy and are handed out by unicorns!
Hey - I'll take a free download!

buhinc,

I'm not sure if you've been to Here's 2 the Arts, however, I've played there on several open mic nights and I was never asked for even one stipend....however, I did buy a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.

just moved to maplewood; my band has a standing gig at arlene's grocery in the city, but would like to get a show going in maplewood sometime(www.thecoloursound.com). we are a little loud (definitely rock and roll) with lots of equipment (Doves-esque ... unbelievable show at the bowery ballroom this past week!), though, so some of the folsky places around maplewood may not work for us. any suggestions on places to play? also, i've asked a few times, but what is maplewood-stock, and how do we get involved? any help is much appreciated :-)

Leny,

Welcome to Maplewood...

Your web site looks interesting, and I can see why you may think the folsky places around may not work for you. Don't be fooled. There are a number of swinging Rock n' Roll groups in the area.

I doubt if you've put together a local following yet if you just moved into town, but if you want to give us a try, we could handle 50 or so of your closest friends.

If you get a chance, check out www.heres2thearts.com

Thanks JTA! -
I have actually been to that site, which is definitely helpful. I was also hoping for some of the locals opinion as well on the various open mics in the area.

I'm always around the music scene in the East Village, does that count as local for you guys?

Here are 2 hot venues:

Sunday showcase @ Micky's Blue Room (you can ask to perform); 171 Ave C btwn 10th & 11th
http://www.mickysblueroom.com/

Monday night open mic @ Morissey Park; St. Marks btwn Ave A & 1st.

...although they are on the lower east side, don't they more often refer to Avenues A B C as Alphabet City than the East Village?

BTW, good choices...

Yes, I’m over there a few times a week. My daughter lives on 10th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, and taught Art at PS64… How come I never see you over there?

Last night for Hour a group of us went to The Phone Booth on 2nd between 9th and 10th, and left around 6PM or so...

Would have stayed later but had to get back to H2TA, get it?! Art had to get to Arts...

There's always something going on seven nights a week. Check the web site, we usually keep it up to date....

BTW, Saturday mornings at 9AM we serve breakfast with the Maplewood Men’s 50's Doo Wop rehearsals... Lots of fun…
