I know there a few out there, and was wondering if anyone else has attempted to read The Whole Equation by David Thompson.

I am an avid reader of his articles in the Independent.co.uk and was looking forward to a good analytical film book, since there has been anything decent in a number of years.

Well the book is unreadable, I find his dwelling on irrelevant minutiae to be annoying while he lets the Parade Go By, so to speak.

I've read the denses of film (Eisenstein, Burch, Cahiers, Film Commnet, and one of my teachers, Edward Brannigan) theorists and I find this book a disappointment.

On the plus side, I just watched a decent DVD called visions of light about cinematogrphy, once again very light on the early years, but a good overview and great to see these mostly unsung artists on film.
