I found an adult male black lab and a Springer spaniel in my yard today around 5 pm. The Lab has a rabies vaccine from SO vet. hospital (busy tone every time I call), but no name or address tag. The Lab jumped into a friend's car, so we caught her, very sweet and affectionate dog- tried to catch the Spanial but she ran down Wyoming towards SO. I called animal control and the MPD and they said they can't do anything until the morning. I think these dogs are a pair and escaped together. If anyone knows who these dogs belong to or if they are yours please call me (I'm listed under Lydia Lacey) The black lab is here - I fed him and gave him water and she seems fine. P.S. I know this should probably be in Soapbox but I think more people read Soapbox and I want to get this very sweet dog safe and home as soon as possible. |

Lydia: You said a male black lab, then you said you fed "her". Male or Female? |

He's a he - at first I couldn't tell, so I wrote "she" - during his walk when I saw the goods I came back and edited my post. I've called around my neighborhood to "dog people" and no one knows any pair who fit the description - still hoping to reunite Dusty (my kids named him) and his owners tonight.

Good luck. I've been trying to think if I know anyone with two such dogs and I am drawing a blank. |

thanks Anon - We made a blanket bed for Dusty and I guess he'll bunk here tonight . He's smart and helpful - he obeys simple commands PLUS he licked my kitchen floor clean. Who's a good dog - Who? Who? Dusty's a good dog! Yes he is! |

Any luck finding the owners? If you post the tag number I'll take a run over to the vet for you and ask them to contact the owner. South Orange Vet hospital is Dr Levine, right? the one who does the JAC adoptions on the corner of Millburn Ave and Valley? |

Final chapter: My entire family fell in love with this sweet dog, I was really sad to send him home (the Spanial made it home safe and sound BTW) From this experience I learned that I don't want a puppy anymore - I want a 2-3 year-old dog that is sweet and a little bit trained. Taking the advice of many MOLers from another thread (back when I wanted a poodle - was I ever so naive?) we're going to adopt a pound dog and donate the money earmarked for a purebred to the pound we adopt from. Thanks MOL and once again, thanks to Algae, we'll miss Dusty (sniffle, sob), but he inspired us to broaden our dog welcoming horizons.

If you have a specific breed in mind, there are many rescue organizations for different breeds that are involved in finding new homes for the pets that are turned in to them. A rescue organization will usually have had the dog in a foster setting for a few weeks and will know the animal's quirks. I'm sure there are wonderful dogs available from pounds (we contribute to Associated Humane Societies and their newsletters always tug at the heartstrings), but if you have a specific breed in mind, you might want to look at rescues. |

Breed rescue organizations are definately a good source for adopting a specific breed. However, it certainly can't hurt to start by contacting local shelters to see if, by chance, they have the breed you are interested in, or know where you might find it if they don't. |

Try www.petfinder.org Links thousands of shelters, rescues and the like. You can search by breed if you want and it will show pure and mixed breeds, and give a lot of info about the dog (age, good with kids, etc). My brother & wife are about to go this route (after babysitting our pugs for a week...I figured that would turn them off getting a dog!). Good luck!

That's a nice story, Lydia. And all the suggestions here are good. We adopted a retired racing greyhound. As you may know, Barb has two, and so does mem. Greyhounds aren't for everyone, but we love ours, and it's a mitzvah to adopt one (as it is to adopt any breed). |

My dog and I met up with a great greyhound in Memorial Park this morning. Most greyhounds I've seen are very reserved, quiet, sedate, perhaps somewhat aloof--all in a good way, of course. I know they are real couch pototoes and it was my understanding that they don't bark. Well, this beautiful brindle we saw was peppy and prancing around, and barking a hello to my dog who was barking one right back. I've always thought I might like to adopt a greyhound some day, but I'm a bit concerned because I have cats and I'd rather the cats didn't become lunch! |

The greyhound rescue agencies test every greyhound for cat safeness. They rate each one, listing them as cat safe or unsafe. Ours was rated cat safe. The minute we brought him home, the cat came to the door, whacked him in the nose, and established her superiority over him. We don't fear for her at all. She has made him bleed a few times, though. Maybe we should be testing our cats for dog safeness! |

Thanks for the link to Petfinders! What a great resource! I don't think I'm a greyhound person, but they are sweet dogs. I had a friend whose Greyhound used to let me paint his nails. I'm looking for a cuddly, lazy dog who isn't too big. Dusty was a black lab and he was a little big for our house. Is there a breed out there built stocky like a Lab but about 20 pounds smaller? |

Lydia We have a Yowzer -- we'll that's what we call her-- unless we're calling her a Schnorkie. She's a standard schnauzer mixed with a yorkie (we think) which keeps her about 18-20 pounds -- small enough to pick up and cuddle, but big enough that we're not afraid she's going to break. Josie found us through the Second Chance Pet Adoption League -- and we're glad she did. |

I like Schnorkie - I guess that's what I'm looking for. My husband is NOT a dog person - which he re-announced when he met Dusty - Quote "I do not have to like this dog" - 4 hours later he was waking me up to sleep downstairs with the dog so he wouldn't be lonely. When we returned Dusty to his owners we were all so sad - both my girls cried and I really didn't want to let him go. The leash I bought for him is still curled up in the front hall - I was really surprised how quickly we fell in love w/ him. |

Lydia: Go get a dog. You're the right kind of person to have one. Don't agonize over what you get. Go start looking, and a dog will find you.

Cmonty - you're right - if I'm open to a dog one will come along. When I was a kid I was always bringing home strays and to my mothers' credit, as long as I took care of them I could keep them. My mother used to bring home lab rats from college because she couldn't bear to kill them once the experiments were over. The only pets I didn't like were those red-eyed rats - they were always crazy and bit us. I had a great cat that i used to hide in my closet when I went to school, by the time my mother discovered him he'd been living with us for a month and she let me keep him. OK - time for a dog - I think Petfinders is going to be the way to go - thanks all! |
