The Lenape Who Came Before Us, an open house that will take place at historic Durand-Hedden House, 523 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, on Sunday, March 20, from 1-4 p.m., will provide a fascinating introduction to our area’s native American history. Beginning at 1:30, John Kraft, a noted archaeologist, lecturer and director of Lenape Lifeways, will give a slide-illustrated lecture on the lives of the native Americans (the Lenape or Delaware Indians) who peopled the local hills and valleys before the arrival of European settlers. What were their lives like, what happened to them and who was the storied Chief Tuscan? Visitors can examine a hands-on display of archaeological artifacts. In addition, at 3:00, there will be a visit by storyteller Beverly Friend, who is of Cherokee heritage and was a protégé of “Lone Bear” Revey, who chaired the New Jersey Indian Office and dedicated himself to preserving the memory of the Lenape culture in this region. In native attire and using real artifacts, Beverly will speak on the daily life of the Lenape and the special relationships between the people and nature preceding contact with Europeans. Admission is free. For more information call 973-763-7712. This program is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
