I have been brooding about this since yesterday, when I read (NYTimes online) that our Congress was going to vote on the Terry Schiavo/feeding tube matter, in an effort to make this a Federal issue, thereby overriding the State Supreme Court. A congressperson was quoted as saying they had a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable citizens in our society. Also in that same news cycle was an piece about an arrest being made in the possible murder case of Rilya, the Flordia child in foster care who was 'lost' five years ago (yes, 'lost' as in no one knew where she was). For the four short years of her life, especially those last few months, Rilya was barely considered worthy of our attention. I think SHE was the most vulnerable person in our society, but we all let her down, and now our lawmakers have the audacity to spend their time and our money passing laws regarding family matters, when children are being lost and murdered under our noses! Am I the only person who believes that a child born to a drug-addicted mother is a most vulnerable person in our society? Where are the protesters and right-to-lifers now? Why isn't anyone parading with a sign for this little girl? Is her life really that much less valuable than Schiavo's? Rilya is an acronym for: Remember I Love You Always. (Thanks for the forum to vent.) -las

Las, Are you thinking that there is a politician in Washington that has actually lost a wink of sleep over Terry Schiavo? OK, maybe some did, because they weren't sure if this would cost them votes in their next election. |

No, TJohn, I don't think any politician really cares about Schiavo. I'm thinking of this in terms of time and resources. I'm not sure if this would constitute 'pork', but it's a waste of our government's time to be passing legislation on this matter, when there are more pressing issues (like missing foster children) at hand. If this was really about justice and protection for vulnerable citizens, there would have been outrage at Rilya's disappearance. |

las -- why the shot at pro-life people? You think they're indifferent to the plight of Rilya? NARAL isn't marching either from the news I've read. |

cjc: It wsn't a shot. I mentioned pro-lifers because they are demonstrating on behalf of Schiavo. |
