O.K. all you music type folks (especially those that I just noticed Record at Home), I have a question I was hoping someone could answer. My 6-year-old son and his best budd have decided to participate in the talent show at their school. They have a favorite artist who's song they would like to sing. What I want to know is, is there any way to record the song and remove the voice of the artist so we just have the instruments, and they could sing over that? Otherwise, the only option is for someone to accompany them on piano, and it really wouldn't have the same effect. I know we've got some really talented folks in this town. It would be so great if somebody could help the little guys out. Thanks.

Aren't there karaoke tapes that provide the music sans vocals? |

Yes, it is possible to remove vocals from pre-recorded songs. However, the result is not good. Here's an analogy: it is like trying to remove pencil markings with a really bad eraser. It just smudges around. The same happens to the sound. However, it might be fine for your kids. I personally don't own the software to remove the voice, but someone else might. |

I just looked at Sweetwater.com for vocal removers. They run around $90. Again, they aren't that great. If the song is popular, Shoshannah's idea might be a good one. Another option: I can record it on piano and burn it on a CD. If the song is sight-readable, it would only take about 5 or 10 minutes. |

Great minds think alike. Already thought of karaoke, checked a couple of websites and came up with nothing. The artist is popular with little kids, but I think he's very specific to NJ, and not yet known to a very wide audience. Sent an e-mail to the artist himself, to see if he might be able to help. Other than that, I'm pretty much stumped. It's kind of a "spooky" song with a lot of appropriate sound effects, so it would lose a lot with only piano. But it is only a grade school talent show, so I guess we'll make do. Try to make up for what we lack in music with really great costumes or something. If anyone else has any ideas, or the equipment and know how to fiddle with the original recording, hopefully we'll hear from them. composerjohn: Been a long time since I've read music myself, so I'm not sure what you mean by sight-readable. We have the album with the song on CD--no sheet music. My son's friend's father is going to try to wing it on the piano himself. If we need help, I might be in touch. Thanks for your kind offer. Thought it couldn't hurt to pose the question here and see what happens. Thanks all. |

sight-readable = can sit down and play the piece without practice. Good luck. Let me know if you need help. |

Just so you know, the way those "remove the vocals" things work is that they suppress the frequency range in which the human voice typically exists. The problem with it is that it also suppresses any instrument sounds or harmonics that also happen to fall within that frequency range. A graphic equalizer can be used to achieve a similar effect. |

A big shout out to my new hero, Mr. Ray, the aforementioned artist. Contacted him via e-mail about the possibility of obtaining a "backing track" for the boys. Just got a message back saying he'd be happy to help us out. What a great guy. Check out his music. My kids, as well as just about all thier friends and classmates at Prospect Co-op Nursery School, are big fans. And now I am too! www.mrray.com Albums: "Start Dreaming" and "Songs from the Kids Lounge" BTW, Mr. Ray used to be a member of Cats on a Smooth Surface, house band at the Stone Pony in the early 80's--for those parent's who may remember! |
