Angelo, Good info. I've got over two decades experience conducting polls and surveys, and I didn't hear anything in the Maplewood poll that would lead me to believe it was anything but legit. I understand the Democratic insiders and the TC members might be peeved that this poll was done, but it's a far cry from a push poll. |

A push poll would be filled with questions like "DId you know the current mayor has never attended a meeting about xxxxxx because he just doesn't care?" |

If you ever get mailings from either national party, you'll know what push poll questions look like. The letters usually have a short survey designed to rev up the party faithful and motivate them to donate. A Democratic survey may have a question like "Do you agree or disagree with President Bush's scheme to privatize Social Security, borrow a trillion dollars, and use it to tranisiton to a system of risky investment accounts that may leave millions of retirees in poverty?" Now THAT'S a push poll question. |

ML and Dave, I've modified my original thought that this is a push poll, I think the questions are benign enough, depending on what side of the fence the respondant sits. I've downgraded from "Push Poll" to "Pushy Poll"

Kathleen--Your statement about how Fred and Ian got elected with a slate of "bogus" Democrats who "seized control" of the nominating process is so off-base its laughable. In case you hadn't noticed, there are things called elections in which people run for office and are elected by other people, fair and square. In this case, several new people who were Democrats ran in the Democratic Primary for seats on the Maplewood Democratic Committee and were elected by fellow Democrats. How dare you call these dedicated people "bogus" or having "seized" anything? You just don't like the results of the election so you cry foul. By the way, you sound alot like Harpo, are you related? |

Hank, it is pretty insulting to be called a bogus Democrat. If I converted to Judiasm, would it be acceptable to call me a "Bogus Jew"? For the record, I am a lifelong Democrat, I ran as a Democrat in 3 elections (district leader once, vice chair twice), and I was elected by Democrats, in my final run as Vice Chair I was elected unanamously - even Vic and Janey DeLuca voted for me. It's really ridiculous for people to still be playing "Who's the real Democrat?", it pits neighbor against neighbor and it doesn't contribute one thing to a civil election. It's not a campaign issue unless candidates want to perpetuate the notion that the Democratic voter is so knee-jerk and uninformed about the issues that the only issue that matters is party affiliation. If you like party affiliation, talk to those Lyndon Larouche people in front of the post office, they're Democrats. Another Democrat is Sharpe James in Newark.

Lydia, I understand your analogy but comparing a faith to a political party affiliation I dont believe is a fair comparison, no matter how "religious" politics are to some folks. And registering for a political party is usually alot easier than converting to a faith. Im hardly sticking up for Kathleen...in fact, I lumped her in with earlier comments about people needing to take the high road. My comment was strictly on the heavy-handed use of "how dare you"...in my opinion a ridiculous phrase in its context here. I was waiting for the poster to follow up "how dare you" with a challenge to a duel. I suppose though they are entitled to their "shock and dismay" as much as Im entitled to believe its at least silly...especially in light of previous posts by that person in this thread. I was making no comment on the "Whats My (Democratic) Line?" gameshow. |

I thought the "how dare you" quote by Hank of Mwldian was because mpwldian flings the insults around just as well as anyone. Take a look back even on this thread where he called Vic a carpet bagger. That's why I'm suprised Jeff even apologized. Let's have a little more civility, honesty and less eye-rolling. Lydia, would you agree that calling someone a carpet bagger is as much an insult as a bogus democrat. Didn't see you "offended" by that insult for some reason. And polls by nature of coming into your house are always going to be somewhat pushy, imo. |

"how dare you" was a bit dramatic, i admit, but i was really shocked and offended by kathleen's post. i should have asked her on what basis she thinks the duly elected members of the Maplewood Democratic Committee are "bogus" democrats and how did they "seize" their positions by being elected by other Democrats? |

the reason they were elected is that Democratic voters don't give a rat's about any of this stuff you guys are arguing about. it's all inside baseball, as far as they're concerned. they don't care who does a poll, who switches parties, who's a "real" donkey, who's a "bogus" donkey, or any of the other stuff going on in this thread. imho |

Folks: I've been "spottily" reading MOL for the last hour and finally something really interesting! Lydia Lacey, Are you really considering converting to Judaism? If so, this is the right moment. It's Purim. The holiday on which the Rabbis admonish that you must drink enough wine to get drunk enough to confuse cursing Haman with praising Mordechai! |

Anon, I'm not religious, but if you count religion by birth, than I'm sort of Jewish and sort of Protestant. A Jewp if you need a label. The last time I was in a synagogue was for my brother's bar mitzvah, but I was asked to leave by one of the helpers that hang out in back when I started nursing. Wendy, "carpet bagger" is course and inflammatory, and I guess I should have been more sensitive to the inappropriateness of that term. I think I reacted to "bogus Democrat" because I've been called that by that poster in so many words more times than I like to recall. It gets old, it's not productive, but it's effective in a "Are you still beating your wife?" kind of way. I think the best thing for Maplewood is to focus on the issues and let the voters choose between the 3 candidates. She said and he said stuff just turns people off.

Lydia: Nursing at a bar-mitzvah! You didn't say which of your parents was Jewish and which Protestant and it's none of my business ,but if your mom was Jewish, you are technically Jewish by strict religious law. And remember that Purim, which I mentioned, is the story of Esther, a Jewish woman married to a non-Jewish husband, the King |

Lydia, now you're being "reasonable" - something you "accused" me of not too long ago. I appreciate your response and, although we don't always agree, I would never consider you anything less than a democrat. Have a good weekend. |
