It was "Social Security for sale to the highest bidder"! There were a lot of good zingers in it, but I can't remember them all. I guess I should have tried to save (or at least print) a copy. |

Democrats are going to win the bid, and they're going to use your money to buy it and you won't get your investment back. But that's OK, because they'll get your neighbors to pay for you. |

oh cjc get over your ideological fixation already. Live long enough you'll get many times your money back. Die early and your spouse gets it. Who ever said it was an investment anyway? It's insurance. And nobody has to eat dog food. I'm not really sure why you'd be so much happier if people did, but don't get me wrong I really don't care to know. |

tom -- it's a welfare program. You can't pass along anything. If you live real long you'll be forcing others to pay for you. It's not insurance at all.

Our mistake, CJC. The government has no interest at all in seeing to it that its elderly and disabled citizens are not totally destitute. Say, this Soylent Green sure is tasty! |

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Social Security trust fund will exhaust its assets in 2041 instead of 2042 as forecast last year, while the Medicare trust fund will be depleted in 2020, rather than 2019, the funds' trustees said on Wednesday. In addition, the trustees projected Social Security outlays would outstrip tax income in 2017 instead of 2018 as previously forecast. When the program's trust fund is exhausted in 2041, tax revenues would still be sufficient to fund 74 percent of the benefits, the trustees said in their annual report on the finances of the programs.

The entire Bush budget is based on a philosophy of "spend now, let someone's grandchildren worry about who's going to pay for it." And the Iraq war isn't even IN the budget! Talk about irresponsible. If I handled my finances that way I'd be bankrupt or in jail. I just hope that the damage isn't irreversible by 2008. |

Just like there's some 94-year-old guy right now that I'M paying for. You don't hear me whining because the big bad government's deducting a few bucks more from my paycheck than I'm likely to get back. The more I hear of this the more I'm convinced that the only principle it's based on is greed. |

With that premise in mind, you don't mind paying over $2.00 a gallon for gas? It seems like "greed" to me. |

Gas prices in Europe are approaching $7.00 a gallon. Two bucks seems real reasonable! |

cjc, re: your post of March 23, 2005 - 9:27 - Isn't that actually the essence of insurance, that a large group of people pay in so that those who need a payout (based on disability, death or long life) will get it? If not, what's your definition of insurance? The only difference I see is that we're all (almost all) required to buy this insurance; but that's not so different from having mandatory car insurance, workers' comp for employers, etc., is it? |
