I didn't make it to the recent T.O.P. show, but heard that Rocco was playing with the band. By the way, Mr. T, are you by any chance acquainted with the Art Blakey & The Jazzmessengers album "Album of the Year"? The last track is a great tune called "Soulful Mr. Timmons". |

Notehead, I'm not familiar with that rekkid, but I assume it's a reference to Bobby Timmons, soulful pianist and composer from the Jazz Messengers. Frankly, I'm not a big jazz fan these days.

OK, let's not get off topic here - and oh, what a topic it is! I saw the talking heads for the 'Stop Making Sense' tour at Forest Hills Tenis stadium. Truly one of the best live shows I have ever seen (and I'm not big on seeing people live anymore). I'm not sure, but I think Tina Weymouth was pregnant at the time. May even have been in the movie. Anyone remember the Tom Tom Club? "Hipin' an a hoppin' with a Curtis Blow, who needs the beat when yer feet just go?". I gave the video of the movie to my sister, she never watched it (as usual), so I swiped it back. Yeah, Talking Heads......love most of David Byrnes stuff without them, those Brazilian compilations way before the music was hip in the states.....still, I miss the pure unadulterated sound they have in the early days. Anyone up for blowing the dust off an old LP, "More songs about buildings and food"? "Take me to the river-drop me in the water" |

Jay, I was at those Forest Hills shows too...was in the back row and ended up on some platform next to the stage. The way that show opened..one performer/instrument at a time...and the I think opening of the second set where David Byrne dances with the lamp during "This Must Be The Place"...all very memorable. |

Sadly, the Heads broke up before I fully appreciated them. My most memorable DB concert was about 6 years ago at the Knitting Factory. I guess he just wanted to play a really small show. It was packed, but I was fortunate enough to snag a couple of the 20 or so seats the set up in the front. The other acts I've seen numerous times are Neil Young and Roger Waters. And, eventually, Radiohead will join the list. |

Yeah, the Heads truly rocked...one of the best bands I have ever seen/heard; one of my all time favorites. Only time I saw them was at Forest Hills too and the movie is my all time favorite concert movie. Here's a good one for you... Went to see Robert Palmer at the Apollo sometime in the late 80's early 90's(?) and after we 2 white boys inadvertently skipped on our check for dinner at Sylvia's (sent check following week) we moseyed on over to the Apollo where we were seated near a woman who feverishly turned to us and said "Looook...there's Tina Weymouth from the Talking Heads...I..I...wish I could talk to her..." She was standing about 4 rows away and talking animatedly to someone so I said "She's right there...just go talk to her..." The woman said "I could never do that" and I said "sure you can, just like this..." and I walked over and said hello to her, saying that she and her friends had made me so happy for so many years with their music. Turns out Jerry Harrison and Chris Frantz were there, all a couple of sheets to the wind (Tina at least 3) and they all made it very clear that DB single-handedly busted up the band and that they were none too happy about it. Neither am I because I loved their music so much and I haven't really loved his post-TH music though I'll try Rei Momo based on above review from Mr.T (not of A Team, I trust...) Anyway, lesson being, talk to anyone, anyone that is who puts on their pants one leg at a time... Loved Tom Tom Club at the World too, 15 years or more ago...anyone remember the World? Be well and rock on, all. David Buckley |

I was at a Richard Thompson show at The Ritz with Shawn Colvin opening up, then singing the Linda Thompson parts...Shawn was covering "Wall of Death" by Thompson back then and also that night did a cover of Heads' "This Must Be The Place". She intro'd the song by saying, "this is a Talking Heads song and I really really like them." During the first encore...Richard Thompson waves out from offstage David Byrne to join along...Shawn Colvin is standing there speechless as RT has to remind her to continue to sing. They do a few songs all together, including "Psycho Killer" and "96 Tears". I remembered that night just this morning listening to a piece on the radio about the closing of Fez...another unique NY music spot. People were talking about memorable nights and shows and the intimacy and the great audiences. One of the wonders of NYC is that on any given night you can hear all sorts of music performed live and really well and just maybe even have a story to tell the next day or years later. |

THE WORLD? Down on the Lower East Side? First St. and 1st Ave, as I recall. Oh, yes.... I hung out there a number of times, I remember seeing Kid Creole and the Coconuts there. Very intimate, very small place, no stage, as I recall, everyone on the same floor. Very low ceiling but great vibe to the place. AN ENQUIRING ASIDE: Speaking of Kid Creole and the Coconuts (and I saw THEM about 15 times) anyone have a copy of Coati Mundi's amazing (and amazingly funny) solo rekkid, "The Former 12 Year Old Genius?" I know it's not available on CD but I'd love to make a cassette of it if anyone's got it. He is the "original rapper." |

Opened for the Tom Tom's at one of those 30 CBGB shows back in the day. Nice folks. Worked on one of Daves' records as well as that sessions at w 54th series. Also a nice guy. |

Musicme, I am starting to wonder if I know you. Did you know a guy named Bob Bannister? Guitarist, played with any number of CBGB bands. I spent a huge amount of time there, at the Mudd Club, and (yes) seeing the Talking Heads between 1979 and 1986. Saw the TH about 10 times...loved loved them. |

Soulful Mr, I think August Darnell (Kid Creole) had part ownership in the World. I don't have the Coati Mundi full record but I think I still may have an EP of him doing , Me No Popeye and a few other songs. I'll take a look. Kid Creole and Coati Mundi, were a lot of fun. A guitarist I used to play with, Jimmy Ripp spent some time playing with Kid Creole, he also played the Keith Richards role in Mick Jaggers not too successful solo career (a very tall Keith Richards, Jimi's around 6'4). |

Hank-I went to see Teddy Thompson, Richard's son at Arlene's Grocery around 2 years ago. I was sitting at a table with Rufus Wainwright when this woman came in who looked like your typical suburban soccer mom, waived to Teddy and started hugging Rufus, it was Linda Thompson. Teddy and Rufus begged her to get up on stage and sing but she refused. Two weeks later I went to the same club to see a friends band. The band right after them was Harper Simon's band. After they finished Harper went to the bar and stated talking to a guy with a Yankee's hat on, turned out to be his dad Paul. It was funny cause his dad was saying, "You guys are OK but Harper the songs are just too long", he was right. |

I, too, love the Talking Heads, and was fortunate enought to see the Stop Making Sense tour twice in the Bay Area. Once at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, a truly amazing show. Gotta love the Tom Tom Club, and Kid Creole, too. But, most recently, I was at a Bat Mitzvah earlier this month, and the DJ was trying to get the adults to dance. The Talking Heads did it. It was great, but somewhat surreal, that this music was the "grown up" music. Cleared the kids right off the dance floor. Sigh. |

Interesting, Sarah, I'm planning a Bat Mitzvah as we speak, just picked a DJ/Music this morning. I'll make sure Talking Heads is on the playlist. |

Mazel Tov. Where are you members? We are at Beth El. (Sorry for the massive thread drift...) But to bring it back, Talking Heads, okay for bat mitzvah, would skip "Oh Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy". |

EXTREMELY OFF TOPIC (after this, we'll email about it privately, I promise) We're still at Beth-El in Jersey City where we were before we moved here, from there, a year ago. My daughter really loves our Rabbi there (we all do) and wanted to stay there for her BM. Once she's Bat Mitzvahed, so-to-speak, we'll move our affiliation here somewhere. |

Muscime, I saw you loads o times--Maxwell's, CBs--really liked the band. Probably we'd know each other by sight. I lived in Hoboken from 94-98, before that in the city for 12 years. We had a band called Fire in the Kitchen... |

Check me on this. I could swear scenes from TH's early MTV video "Burning Down the House" where filmed in Maplewood. I remember friend of mine living across the street and going over to watch filming. I did not grow up in Maplewood and cannot recall address. It was around 82-83. |
