Very cool, but mostly because Coltrane's solo on Giant Steps is so awesome. I'd bet he wouldn't much like the animation. What do you think musicme?

Always been a huge fan of the song and the album..Cousin Mary, Mr PC, and of course the gorgeous Naima.
I think the animation is an interesting take, with some nice flourishes. If it gets anyone to listen that wouldn't ordinarily hear it, it's worth it!

And just for the heck of it, for all you jazz fans, what non-jazz vocalist do you most enjoy? I'd go with James Taylor or Sting.

Thanks, that was great Musicme...

Listen, maybe you and some of the follow-up posters can help us out? We've been trying to attract some local Jazz fans for some live entertainment at the Cafe, but the turnout has been generally disappointing.

My wife and I enjoy going out now and again for Jazz, and locally we'll go to Trumpets, or maybe Cecil's. Friends of ours, Bob Ackerman and Pam Purvis play a lot of local clubs, and we also like to support them as often as possible at their different venues, including here at the Cafe from time to time.

We would be willing to bring in some name musicians, but honestly, we thought there would be a lot more interest in town for a night of "Live Jazz". Obviously, if we had name entertainment there would have to be a cover to support it. Is it Jazz, the town, the night, or what?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My humble opinion, there aren't enough jazz fans to support most venues. Even the known places struggle to make money. I'm speaking out of total ignorance though. musicme probably knows a lot more about the topic. Ignorance never stopped me from posting before though.

He recorded "You Won't Forget Me" with Shirley Horn a few months before he died-while not top drawer it is haunting

Vocalists
Sarah Vaughn, Jack Teagarden, Kurt Elling, Shirley Horn, Billie Holiday

Hard to sell jazz on a regular basis out in the 'burbs, you usually need a reputation for good food (Shangai Jazz) to help, or have jazz on a rotation with other entertainment, like Turning Point in Piermont, NY (Hey Uke, Terry Adams is there tonight!) or like our own Dancing Goat. Trumpets has struggled, but managed to stay open by the skin of it's teeth-everytime I play there it feels darker and colder-saving on the electric bill!

Jazz sounds pretty good at Here's 2 the Arts, I might point out. Nice room for acoustic music with a warm ambience to boot!

I think you're right about that Jeff. The known places struggle, and so do the name musicians...

There are millions of Jazz fans all over the world, but there's something weird about them coming out to support live performances. Bob and Pam have been complaining about it for years.

We thought it wouldn't be a big deal to draw 20 or so people once or twice a month. This past Friday night we had an incredible evening of live Jazz, but only drew a handful of people. What a shame...

Wharfrat:

Leon Thomas-Did a few records with Pharoah Sanders, his most popular tune is, "The Creator had a Master Plan". Interesting style.

Steve Tyrell-Was Burt Bacharachs protege. Has sort of a rough edge to his voice. He unfortunately produced Rod Stewarts "Standards " recordings which I don't care for. Funny thing is, he covered the same tunes on his own albums and sold nothing, does those tunes with RS who can't compare and he sells millions. Go figure.

I should also have included Little Jimmie Scott.

I saw Leon Thomas a couple of times back in the late 70's, he had a tremendous voice and his own approach-he also could yodel incredlibly.

There's a recording of Leon and Louis Armstrong doing "The Creator Has a Master Plan" -now that's an unlikely duet!

Speaking of standards done by non-jazz artists, any of you have the Cyndi Lauper CD, At Last? I love it. Musicme, I think that I recall you aren't enamored with it or her, right?

She's a little touchy. Not feely

Saw her years ago with Blue Angel...opening up for the Ramones at the Barn at Rutgers.
Loud Show!
