Saturday, March 26th Sarah Aroeste
Maplewood Memorial Library http://www.saraharoeste.com Tickets: $14 in advance, $16 at the door Listen to her on NPR: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1554187 Sarah Aroeste is best known for her funky fusion of Spanish, Mediterranean and American musical styles. Inspired by her family's cultural heritage--orginally from Spain and later settling in Salonika, Greece-- the Aroeste sound combines and updates aspects from her unique family background. Most influenced by the music and language of her Spanish roots, Aroeste grounds her music in Ladino, or castillian Spanish, the language originated by Spanish Jews after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. This medieval form of Spanish was carried by Spanish Jews to the various points where they later settled, primarily along the Mediterranean coast and North Africa. In time, ladino came to absorb bits and pieces of languages all along the Mediterranean coast, including Greek, Turkish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Hebrew. American born, Aroeste has decided to revive this rich body of music by combining it with more contemporary musical influences. Aroeste has created a unique sound that mixes traditional Mediterranean Sephardic music with rock, funk, jazz and blues. The Band uses traditional Ladino folksongs in which most of the lyrics, although derived soon after the Inquisition 500 years ago, could just have easily been written today. There are songs about family, first-love crushes, unrequited love, breaking up with a lover - all themes that cross centuries, geographic and ethnic boundaries. Taking this body of music and updating it with a contemporary sensibility, the Sarah Aroeste Band is known to be the only Ladino ³Rock² group in the world, and has helped to transform and revitalize a tradition. In a special acoustic set, Aroeste will be joined by Yoel Ben-Simhon (oud, classical guitar, back-up vocals) and Liron Peled (drum, percussion).
