Charles (we'll call you Chedron if you prefer, it sounds kind of cool), you'll find Bush-bashing and Clinton-bashing on virtually every MOL thread involving politics. But I think you'll find plenty of good discussion about a wide range of issues. Some days (and weeks) are better than others. Most of us try (with at least moderate success) to keep the discussions focused on the issues and the opinions, and not on the posters themselves. If that sounds good to you, please stay with us. |

Well, I appreciate the feedback, and I do hope I see an improvement. I've been in Government for nearly twenty years, and I'm hoping this is a place I can vent my feelings and beliefs without having to worry about groundless insults, etc. |

Hi, What level of government do you work in, Charles? State, County, Fed? |

"Never try to teach a pig to sing. It will waste your time and annoy the pig." This is how I feel about many kinds of criticism. You could piss us off with your insults if you like, but is that what you want? There was a brilliant researcher down the hall from me when I worked at Bell Labs. Whenever someone said "why doesn't someone...?" he would respond with "I look forward to your results." If you think you can raise the level of debate here, I would welcome it. I sense somehow that you lean a bit to the right, and I really enjoy a good debater from the right. I do not hurl insults, and I have an open mind. I have actually changed my views on many things as a result of debates. But keep in mind that we are not professional commentators here. We don't have the time or experience for that. I have a great appreciation for people like Thomas Friedman, but that doesn't mean I can analyze or write about something as well as he can. So don't expect that level here. After all, it *is* called the soapbox! If you're truly disappointed with the debate here, maybe your beef is not with us but with your wife, who told you it was so grand. Just what did she say? That's not intended as a slap. As I said, if you want to try to raise the level of debate here, you just might be pleased with the results, if your expectations are reasonable. However, interjecting "holy ignorance" as your only input isn't an example of how. And I bet you knew that, anyway. Tom Reingold

Charles: Does your wife post on here? There is one married couple on MOL who sometimes speak to each other through their posts. Though they usually do so at about 3:00 am.(I bet he thinks I'm kidding!) And as long as I'm talking about nothing in general, No Hero, I just noticed that I am finally able to read your small print. I never told you so, but I always found it annoying. But now I realize that my eyesight has been improved by the execrcise of reading your posts. Thank you. |

Either way it'll be a hoot having our own know it all 'Cliff Chedron' on the list. Welcome Cliffy :-) Looking forward to some more of those well thought out " Holy Ignorance " posts...

This is exactly the type of nonsense I was talking about. This Michael Arnold is not the type of poster I want anything to do with. He's obscene, rude. |

Charles, didn't your mother tell you that the answer to rudeness is NOT more rudeness? I can't think of a more rude thing that to insult someone's kids. You don't have to respond to him, which is even easier than insulting his kids. Ah well, you may get your wish, because that's the sort of thing our esteemed moderator suspends people for. You asked for moderation. Here it comes. Tom Reingold

I have it on good authority that Charles A. Moody is actually Charles Emerson Winchester reincarnate. The difference is that in MASH, Winchester was forced by circumstances to associate with the hoi polloi. Moody seems to do it by choice. |

I'm quite offended by what I'm seeing. This is an awful site, and the posters are fools. I can't believe you people speak to others like this. I live in Maplewood and I am owed a little courtesy as a result. Holy ignorance. |

Okay, why don't we start over? Mr. Moody, I think you experienced a phenomenon which sometimes takes place here - when someone insults everybody (i.e., "I thought I was dealing with an intelligent on line community"), participants who may disagree about a lot of things, sometimes band together. If you still want to stick with your blanket condemnations (i.e., "This is an awful site, and the posters are fools"), that may go on. If you think someone has insulted you, you can point that out, then move on. If you click on my name, to get to my profile, you'll see I've memorialized some choice, baseless insults that I've received recently. If the insult is really unfair, then it reflects poorly on the insulter, not the target. Now, as to why people say what they do about President Bush, it could be the things he says at, for example, his last press conference: quote:Q. What evidence can you point to that tax cuts, at least of the variety that you have supported, are really working to help this economy? And do you need to be thinking about some other approach? A. Yes. No, to answer the last part of your question. First of all, let me -- just a quick history, recent history. The stock market started to decline in March of 2000. Then the first quarter of 2001 was a recession. And then we got attacked in 9/11. And then corporate scandals started to bubble up to the surface, which created a -- a lack of confidence in the system. And then we had the drumbeat to war. Remember on our TV screens -- I'm not suggesting which network did this -- but it said, "March to War," every day from last summer until the spring -- "March to War, March to War." That's not a very conducive environment for people to take risk, when they hear, "March to War" all the time.
to which some say, "Huh?" Oh, and Anon, regarding your note about the small type comments, Happy to be of service! |

Charles, Please read about Br'er Rabbit and de Tar Baby. You will recall that the Tar Baby offended Br'er Rabbit by not responding to his greeting. So Br'er Rabbit hit the Tar Baby. The Tar Baby wouldn't let go of Br'er Rabbit and Br'er Rabbit hit him again. Eventually, he was totally stuck to the Tar Baby and along came Br'er Fox. Anyway, I think the way you are trying to elevate the level of discussion on MOL is akin to Br'er Rabbit trying to force the Tar Baby to be polite. |

--and his kid is funny looking.-- HEY!!! That's a picture of me!!! :-0 Don't be so cranky, Cliff. Maybe you could help educate us mouth-breathers with some of your insight instead of dismissing the entire sight. I'm sure you have a lot more to contribute than what you've shown so far. You've condemned MOL for being shallow and rude and yet all of your posts have been shallow and rude. Join the party and contribute, you just might like it :-)

Let me get this straight, Charles. Correct me in any of my mistakes interpretations, and bad inferences. We are fools because we insult each other. But it's OK for you to insult us, because you're smarter than we are. And you're the person who henceforth decides who is smarter than whom. Do I have that about right? Or am I missing something? Noglider, you are missing something. It is called experience and you will (more often than not) find that as your children and you yourself and your spouse grow older, and pay more taxes, and deal with obvious government waste, that you will become more conservative in your views. I laugh as I say this, because I too was once a young, naive, believer in the socialist style democratic principles that I was taught in school. Then I was forced to deal in the real world. |

Charles, In another thread, you stated you were from the midwest. How recently did you move to Maplewood? Based on your comments, I assume it was fairly recently and you are experiencing culture shock. I experienced the reverse culture shock after gowing up in NJ and going to college in the South. Seeing bible thumping preachers on campus, everything closed on Sundays and unbelievable ignorance towards minorities was quite a rude awakening for me that I decided I didn't belong there. Assuming you are a recent transplant to NJ....I say welcome...just realize you ain't in Kansas anymore. |
