Some actual quotes from Albert Einstein: It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity --Albert Einstein (03/14/1879-1955) The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. --Albert Einstein The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving. --Albert Einstein My religiosity consists in a humble admiratation of the infinitely superior spirit that reveals itself in the little that we, with our weak and transitory understanding, can comprehend of reality. Morality is of the highest importance -- but for us, not for God --Albert Einstein The Human Side, 1954 Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love. --Albert Einstein |

Since when is power the measure of rightness? I would think that from your login name you would know better. The Chinese have all the power in Tibet. Does that mean that the Tibetans who want independence are wrong?

Albert Einstein was a socialist. In 1949 he wrote an article entitled "Why Socialism?" and here are some quotes: "The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil." "Under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights." "This crippling of individuals I consider the worst evil of capitalism... An exaggerated competitive attitude is inculcated into the student, who is trained to worship acquisitive success." "I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals. In such an economy, the means of production are owned by society itself and are utilized in a planned fashion. A planned economy, which adjusts production to the needs of the community, would distribute the work to be done among all those able to work and would guarantee a livelihood to every man, woman and child. The education of the individual, in addition to promoting his own innate abilities, would attempt to develop in him a sense of responsibility for his fellow-men in place of the glorification of power and success in our present society." In 1932, an extreme right-wing outfit called the Woman Patriot Corporation sent a 16-page letter to the State Department arguing that Einstein should not be allowed to come to the US (he'd been invited here to teach). According to this group, Einstein’s well known anti-war and internationalist views amounted to "direct affiliation with Communist and anarcho-communist organizations and groups." The State Department proceeded to interrogate Einstein at the US Consulate in Berlin about his political views. According to an Associated Press report at the time: “Professor Einstein’s patience broke. His usual genial face stern and his normally melodious voice strident, he cried: ‘What’s this, an inquisition? Is this an attempt at chicanery? I don’t propose to answer such silly questions. I didn’t ask to go to America. Your countrymen invited me; yes, begged me. If I am to enter your country as a suspect, I don’t want to go at all. If you don’t want to give me a visa, please say so. Then I’ll know where I stand.’" From: The Einstein File: J. Edgar Hoover’s Secret War Against the World’s Most Famous Scientist, by Fred Jerome |

I believe this is from Samuel Johnson's dictionary: Conservative: A statesman enamoured of existing evils; As distinguished from a Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others. |

I get great joy out of posting an obviously trumped up quote and then watch all of you stumble over yourselves trying to a) prove me wrong b) prove me lying c) justify yourselves have you ever asked yourself why conservative literature is so popular today? i'm sure mr. rheingold and tom will provide me with their slanted and biased opinion, but i will give you mine. because conservatives are tired of liberal media, liberal politicians and liberal educators and they want a change. this, i believe, is only a beginning. and yes, china does have all the power, but the people of tibet have all of the sexy women.

I get great joy out of posting a list of ways that conservatives have obviously been wrong and then watch all of you stumble over yourselves trying to a) change the subject b) worry about whether you'll get Social Security checks c) run away (Straw? Straw?) have YOU ever asked yourself why conservative literature is so popular today? I think it's for the same reasons that reality TV, action movies and hip-hop are popular; it's dumbed-down, and diverting. |

I don't see any of us stumbling at all. It usually takes less than 10 keystrokes to find proof on the 'net that the knee jerk right wingers (please don't flatter yourselves with the label "conservative") know next to nothing about the things they post about. Right wing media is popular because it doesn't require people to think. It positively discourages it, in fact. It makes fun of learning and says being a schoolyard bully is better. Now let's see who feels offended by that because they identify with it! |

I like the distinction between "right winger" and "conservative". Kind of like the distinction between FreeTibet and William F. Buckley. As for "liberal media" last time I checked about 6 megacorporations own the media. Don't see a lot liberal tendencies in that. I think they're much more likely to protect corporate interests than anything else. |

Three quick oxymorons: "Jumbo Shrimp" "Justice Scalia" "Conservative Literature" OO, but that Ann Coulter, what a right wing fox. Does she go, hey, does she go, know-what-I mean? Sorry, but the general low level of discourse coming from the right on this thread has caused me to lower my usually exalted posting standards. |

That's all right Nohero. I'm sure before the day is out you'll be googling up some of your favorites, in an attempt to make those words seem as if they're your own. We know your game better then you know your game. You see let me explain something to you, we know you're a phony. We know you bring little to the table other then the thoughts of others. We really feel sorry for people like you. You don't lead, you follow. |

Oh for the love of - Straw, don't get your panties in a bunch. Face it, while you have done incredible damage to the civility of this online community (not to mention chasing away some people I wish would participate more), there are a few people you still can't intimidate with your "Fox News" tactics. Deal with it, Tiger. By the way, is that the best you can do, sputtering all over your monitor while typing, "Oh yeah, well, you don't have an original thought at all." I'll have you know that every dumb-ass thing I've ever posted here, was a 100% original thought of my own. Who is "we", by the way? Do you have a little he-man-Nohero-hating club that meets in someone's basement at night? That would explain all of the posts in the wee hours of the morning ... |

here's a NON-original thought worth repeating: please do not feed the trolls!! also - liberals may to some extent have let right-wingers get the upper-hand by taking the high road, refusing to call a spade a spade, and letting right-wingers' words be the last that hang in the air. of course, it's quite difficult to talk over the obstreperous likes of Ann Coulter - but being polite, by allowing her to interrupt and talk all over her liberal counterparts in debate, may be resulting in the implication that what she has to say is more valuable, and worth deferring to. |

Gray Davis certainly nailed the Bush junta in a speech last night. He pointed out that Republicans are trying to steal the government since they can't get elected by constitutional means. He pointed out that Cheney was formulating energy policy with Enron even as Enron was raping California. He pointed out that he reaped the harvest of deregulation sowed before he was elected. However, I think the Warren Buffett explained it a little better when he pointed out that Californians are reaping the bitter harvest of their own making - Proposition 13 and other tax limiting measures. Sooner or later, you have to pay the piper. This is something we should all bear in mind as the Bush junta plunders the U.S. Treasury with tax cuts and tax rebates while spending and borrowing like there is no tomorrow. |

1-2, you're correct. That's a better rule to follow. I only wish that not feeding them would have some effect. Algebra2 - Longevity or post count does not equal wisdom. I offer myself as Exhibit A. So, in closing: "Please don't feed the trolls"* *Not an original thought of my own. |

Trolls don't have to be "newbies"
quote:troll v.,n. To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies"; which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling";, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it. The following extract is from a broader expansion of the defining comments given above: In Usenet usage, a troll is not a grumpy monster that lives beneath a bridge accosting passers-by, but rather a provocative posting to a newsgroup intended to produce a large volume of frivolous responses. The content of a "troll posting generally falls into several areas. It may consist of an apparently foolish contradiction of common knowledge, a deliberately offensive insult to the readers of a newsgroup, or a broad request for trivial follow-up postings. There are three reasons why people troll newsgroups: People post such messages to get attention, to disrupt newsgroups, and simply to make trouble. Career trollers tend for the latter two whilst the former is the mark of the clueless newbie and should be ignored.
