I wanted to start this thread to give some constructive criticism to the owners of the Gaslight Brewery. It really is a nice place with a interesting menu, but like anyplace it could use some improvements. I’ll print this out and take it to Tony one Sunday. I’m sure they would like to know what they can do to get better return business. |

Brett go back to the arts and entertainment archive through May 6 2003. In a thread titled "South Orange Grill" you will have plenty to print out for the folks at the Gaslight. Once we were regulars there as well and for many of the listed reasons, have not gone back. |

duncan's suggestion is a good one and a timesaver, most likely. But to summarize from my standpoint: -take an objective look at staff. Listen to legitimate (repeated) complaints: lack of training, 'attitude', etc. -Be friendlier. -Improve the C to C- beer quality (it is a brewpub after all). -Pare down the menu- lose the myriad mostly mediocre choices, and do 10 things really well instead. -Move the music into the underused dining area, leave the games area alone. NO cover charges. -Connect. hook up with SHU and bring the students (those old enough) and faculty into town (Other businesses will benefit). Become "Hall Hoops HQ", or whatever. Host the Rotary, Lions, PTA, etc. Join the darts league, etc. -Lighten up. -"Buy" a beer now & then. All constructive I hope. I wish them well.

I love Bunnies !! Gaslight could learn a lot from bunnies. Nice service and good food. Gaslight's biggest problems are the people that serve the customers. There seems to be some kind of anger or something. I gave the place many chances, always left disappointed. |

Gaslight can also spring for a Highchair or 2. Having been to dozens of restaurants of all price ranges since having a child, Gaslight is the ONLY one that didn't have a highchair & REFUSED to let our child sit in her stroller. Why are they so child-phobic? They try to make themselves an "upscale" restaurant, by having higher prices, but the food is mediocre, at best. |

The staff has never been particularly angry with us, but they seem a little over-intrusive. I don't mind them asking you how your meal is, but they seem to hover a lot. Like they are uncomfortable doing their job, knowing their gratuity is on the line. We go to Cryan's occasionally and are always pretty happy with the food and the service. It's no-frills dining and it's affordable, too. Their food is just kind of lame. There really isn't anything special about it. I don't mind having non-descript food every once in a while, but the prices are incredibly high for what it is. |

i agree about the attitude. the bartender once spattered some beer on my wife... when she jumped, he looked over, said "did I get some on you?", but never apologized and never threw us a beer for good measure. agree about the beer quality -- get rid of the tuns in the front window and add some seating, and add some world-class taps to the offering. if you can't brew great beer, don't try -- focus on a great customer experience and let the brewers at Sierra Nevada do the rest. i have to admit that I do like the food though, if you stick with simple things like their burgers. |

In pre-child days, we went to Gaslight a couple of times. Burgers were fine, anything more ambitious was mediocre, and not worth repeating. Service was mediocre also. Around when our daughter was born, we read a number of reports of child-intolerance on this webboard (specific experience, not rumors), and haven't been back, since everyplace else we go knows how to deal with children. I'm still waiting for any hint that their attitudes, food or ownership(!) have changed, so that we have reason to try again. I'd love to have a good local brewpub/restaurant to go to. In the meantime, we'll stick to places that seem to want us. |

Just to add my 3 cents about the Gaslight and children: I went there on a rainy April night three years ago with my husband, my father-in-law and my 3 month old baby. There was only one other table of diners and we were in the back corner. Facing into the corner, I figured it would be fine to nurse the baby discreetly. Nope -- the incredibly unpleasant owner told us to leave (just as we were about to be served), swearing at my husband because he refused topay the bill and telling me I was "badly brought up." Needless to say, we haven't been there since. |

What were you thinking? Breast feeding in a RESTAURANT!!? I'm glad they tossed you out. I'm glad they discourage screeching, hellaciously annoying kids. I'm tired of people who can't or choose not to control their children in public. I'm also glad they spill beer on people now and then. That's fun. Get over it. The food is tasty and the beer is decent. No miracles, but they're consistent.

I can understand that people have to bring their little kids on airplanes, even though I have had the most horrendous flights due to either spoiled or over tired little kids (maybe they can have adults only flights someday?), and I can understand bringing the little ones to restaurants if they can't get a sitter, especially since there are so many kid friendly restaurants these days, and if they want finer dining then GET a sitter...but! I can't understand why people bring their little kids to the mall or the grocery store, especially at night when one of the partners is home. It freaks me out that people calmly shop away while their kids are screaming, grappling and squalling until they blow a brain fuse trying to grab up everything in the store. I have actually had little kids trying to grab things out of my cart and then freaking out at me for telling them to get lost. Last week I was going to put tissue in my ears at Kings. Anyway, I don't know how parents put up with it. If I acted like that when I was little I would still be wrapped in duct tape and locked in my room. |

and usually the parents go along with their kids, talking back to them in an equally loud voice thinking that they are being so reasonable but it's just loud and annoying, "honey, I told you no candy, but you can have the fruit roll-up after dinner. Is that okay? No, I said after dinner. You have to make good choices, sweetheart. Now, no running through the aisles! I mean it. Now stop hitting Johnny. I'll have to take away the fruit roll-ups. Is that okay? No? Well then no fruit rollups after your vegetarian gumbo torte that I'm making special. It has so many good vitamins to make you so strong." blah blah blah....kid goes and hits baby brother....balh blah blah I just want to tell the parent that a simple "no" usually works. |

5 hour red eye from Vegas, Vegas for god sakes. Had to listen to kid scream the whole time. I would pay more for a flight with no kids. Parents love them, I don't. |

Folks, Get a life, you were all kids once and maybe you were all perfect, but from reading some of your posts here, I somehow doubt that.

I’m not saying I was never on a plane as a kid making a ton of noise. I expect it on a flight to Orlando, but a plane that takes off at 10:30pm; doesn’t that seem a little bit late to have a four year old getting on a plane? Maybe it was the only ticket they could get but you’d think that they would be as put off as I was buy traveling that late with a child. |

Brett.. no matter how it appeared, I am sure they were put off. nothing worse than a child stretched beyond its little ability to process exhaustion. As for the others who spoke so hatefully..yes hatefully against children, I am sorry for you. Because for every one of the times I have seen a child misbehave or throw a tantrum in public, I have also seen an awkward somewhat frightened child slip his hand into his mothers hand. Or watched a little boy run across classroom to jump into his parents arms. Or seen a little girl hug her friend who just fell off the slide. By focusing on the outbursts we forget the sublime uncensored love that kids are capable of. And when we lose sight of that we are doomed. Completely. |
