Here's a nice page from investopedia that explains the "Laffer Curve," the theory behind the Reagan tax cuts: http://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/laffercurve.asp. Note that at the right-hand extreme, higher rates produce lower revenues. Note also that at the extreme left-hand side, lower rates produce lower revenues. The trick is to find the sweet spot in the middle.

Unless you're trying to choke off government altogether on principle and only pretend to care about economics.

I like this page, too, for it's breezy tone even though it's clearly written by a conservative: http://www.vistech.net/users/rsturge/laffercu.html

Attn Nohero, Tjohn is engaged in thread drift. He starts with the California deficit and is now mumbling about Bosnia, the Balkins and Iraq.

Tjohn - add this 4th reason to your original post,
4) the massive overload on Cailfornia schools and healthcare due to illegal immigration.

cjc-

that's a bizarre conclusion.

"kuwait" was apart of iraq until the british, wishing to withdraw form iraq, created kuwait out of thin air in order to secure oil for britain. the "kuwaiti royal family" are stooges along the lines of some of the us puppet rulers of colonial central america. the us military has twice sacrificed american lives to perpetuate this colonial theft.

we don't act on principle- we not only permit israel to be ruled by a murdering terrorist and to violate numerous un reslutions while imprisoning the palestinians in the largest concentration camp in the history of the world, we give them the arms to murder the innocents with and the money to build the fence.

we're all about colonial in the middle east.

Reflective: Why would I give a fig about thread drift? And if I did, I think it "drifted" on Monday. You know, once people start discussing liberalism, someone's bound to mention Clinton, and away we go!

Actually, there are very few topics where someone doesn't wind up mentioning Clinton. Why is that?

Let's see, Clinton replaced Burr as V.P....Burr shot and killed Hamilton...Back when Clinton was Governor of NY he selected Burr to be Attorney General.

Bottom line: Both, George Clinton and Bill Clinton somehow or another wind up with blood on their hands.

Thread drift: when conservatives don't have a leg to stand on, they kick Clinton. Who needs facts, reason, logic when you make a dirty joke?

Quick question for those who know more than I about the California problems:

Doesn't the Legislature have to pass the spending bills that the Governor then signs? If so, why aren't they recalling the entire Legislature also--Dems and Repubs? Seems to me like Davis is the fall guy for a whole lot of other people's decisions/votes.

Allow me to explain. They just might rabbit, they just might.

Seriously though, Jesse Ventura raised the same argument. However, in this case someone needs to be held accountable and clearly the California voters have made Davis that man. In the end though, many a head will roll as well.

hello --

I don't dispute that the Brits drew the lines in the Middle East that in many ways started all this mess, but the US is not a colonizing entity there. We don't occupy -- we liberate and leave (hopefully, something that works. Haiti, anyone?). Do we have interests? Yes. Do we pursue them? Yes, but we don't occupy or install governments. But just because you try to instill a form of democracy doesn't mean you get an ally anyway. They could turn out to be worthless and hostile after you leave....like France (see: colonizer).

Israel? Whole 'nother thread. But you're wrong there too.

Many a country/people can wallow in victimhood and blame US of some European country for all of their problems. Some do (e.g. Bin Laden) and live a life of hatred and terrorism. Others don't (e.g. Vietnam) and seek to get on with the future.

Hello,

Your knowledge of Israel is so ass backwards, your opinions pathetic and your anti-semetic stupidity a damn disgrace. You are without a doubt someone who lacks an ability to understand the world for what it is. Please keep your mouth shut until you learn a little bit more about what it is the Israeli people fight against each and everyday. Until then, I suggest you stop posting here on MOL, because what you've just said above is sickening.

You're a fool...An absolute anti-semetic racist fool. Do us a favor go join the nazi party, and go away.

Jeez...I'm not really aware of "hello"'s previous posts, but "anti-semetic racist" off that one post, Straw? I mean, he's totally wrong, and I profoundly disagree, but I wouldn't go that far without more evidence.

Tell you what, you forward that message of his to a Jewish organization here in the U.S. and tell me what THEY think of his hate, and his comments. I take those comments very seriously. I suggest anyone who values human life do the same. The innocent Palistinian government, and its people. Yeah sure, tell that to the 18 victims blown out of a bus 2 days ago as they were leaving a holy prayer session. Like I said its best if this Hello character says goodby, now!

I have to sympathize with Straw. Israel has to live with mini 9/11 threats on a daily basis.

Hello,

Certainly you realize the the term concentration camp has special meaning - perhaps you would prefer the orginal, KZ Lager. To equate Israel's handling of the occupied territories with a Nazi concentration camp is highly inaccurate AND guaranteed to cause offense without adding value to the conversation.

This is not to say that there isn't room for improvement in Israel's behavior from time to time. However, it would be helpful if your comments were accurate, non-inflammatory and cognizant of the fact that for a large number of Palestinians, liquidation of Israel in the Nazi sense of the word is the preferred option.

Hello,

You are not winning any converts to your point of view. One can be critical of Israel without putting them on the level of the Nazis. Why not give it a try. Try to be honest and recognize that the current crackdown in the occupied territories is in response to a murderous campaign of terrorism directed against unarmed civilians.

i'm being completely honest.

i see you left the "settlers" (such a nice word for people who steal someone else's land and raze their homes and shoot them dead, all under the protecton of the army) out of your little fable.
