Has anyone else noticed an increase in airplane noise over the last month or so??? Our windows are rattling and the whole house vibrating several times a day (especially morning and evenings) with some of these low flying planes. Is there some avenue to complaining? Jerry or Vic - does the TC have any ongoing dialogue with the airport? |

My house is fairly air-tight, so I don't hear any outside noise at this time of year unless it's a loud truck right in front of the house. However, yesterday, when I left my house for work at 6:25 A.M., it was so loud outside I thought the sky was falling. I saw one plane and one helicopter in the distance and nothing else. I hope this isn't a trend, because all the folks in town that are home during the more pleasant or summer months are going to be highly annoyed! Of course, you and I are in roughly the same neighboorhood, and the noise my not affect all in Maplewood equally, especially for the helicopter noises if they are observing route 78. |

Don't call Town Hall. Any inquiries to Valley Street receives a suggestion for you call the airport or contact FAA. I contacted the Congressional Office and they provided a number to call to complain. The number has since been disconnected, but believe it or not, it did seem to help when I called to complain. Just a thought, airplane noise, East or West side of town? |

Actually it's the middle of town but it's so loud and so close and can't imagine that people east and west of us aren't affected. The thought of calling a bureaucracy like the FAA makes me kinda queasy but I'm getting really annoyed so I guess I'll try. Thanks |

I located the number for Newark noise complaints - it is 973-961-6026 - of course it is an automated system but hey it's worth a try. If anyone else is noticing this I hope you give them a call. Also the FAA's web page for dealing with noise complaints is http://www.faa.gov/region/aea/noise/framedoc.htm. |

East side of town, too. Window-shaking, can't talk during it, waking up from sound sleep sometimes. But I haven't discerned any pattern in when it occurs and it's not daily in my experience. Of course, I'm not home a good deal of each day, either. Bacata |

I live near the high school (is that middle or West?) and the noise is quite loud. I'm home all day and it does seem to be fairly constant. My son is a toddler and has just discovered the planes in the air so he loves it, but I sure don't. |

Hismom - I also live not far from the high school. Please call the number above - it only takes a couple of minutes and I have heard people have had success from complaining. |

Over a year ago, I wrote almost the identical post about "noise from above". It was met with a moderate degree of hostility. Some stated that since we live in close proximity to Newark Airport, it was to be expected. I contacted the FAA and wrote our State Senators. I never got any response from them regarding jet noise. The new flight control tower at Newark Airport is nearing completion. The extension of the runways, which were delayed for a year or so, are now going "full speed ahead". I suspect if you think it is bad now, just wait until those new runways are open. If anyone knows if the flight patterns are due to change (for the better or worse), I sure would like to know. |

I believe that, in order to relieve conjestion in flight paths because of the great increase in air traffic, certain flights are now put into a lower altitude path. It is part of the price we pay for being so "wealthy" and wanting to fly so much. |

Before we get into an East vs. West dispute again, the entire town suffers from airplane noise on occasion. I've been on Maplewood Ave. before and been dive-bombed by a 757. It seems that the take-off and approach routes change seasonally. Sometimes there'll be a lot of air traffic, and sometimes very little. |

I can put up with occasional noise and this has nothing to do with east vs west but frankly the past while has been like living at the end of a runway. What I am talking about is a significant increase in low flying noise. |

Maybe the FAA has changed routing on arrivals and departures at Newark. Also, prevailing winds in the winter are different than in the summer and that may cause more planes to be routed over our area. The FAA has new noise regulations for jet airliners and the planes are much more quiet than before. Most of the older jets are either out of service or equipted with "hush kits", Maybe DHL or FEDEX is flying some old planes in and out of Newark these days. Occasionally I also hear a really loud one. However, having lived for a couple of years on the approach to La Guardia in Flushing, this is heaven. At least I don't pick up radio transmissions on my TV!! This is like everything else, the squeaky wheel gets the oil so keep compaining. Maybe the FAA will change the routings or put in a noise monitoring station. |

I think the routing and flight paths also have to do with the weather and the wind direction. Seems like some days are worse than other days. Beside Newark Airport, don't forget that we are also contending with Morristown Airport. (which is a private airport) I swear sometimes I think those planes are going to land on my roof! |

Nursie, As an unlicensed pilot I can assure it would be vertually impossible to land a plane on the roof of your house. Unless of course it crashed onto the roof of your house, but that`s a totally different thing. |
