I have a few friends that want to come over this weekend, and i suggested that we go get some beers at the gaslight. after reading some of the negative reviews about the place, i was wondering if you guys have any other suggestions for brewpubs in the area. |

http://www.nycbeer.org/new-jersey/brewpubs.html I don't see gaslight on this list. If you want to take a drive Krogh's in Sparta has great beer. |

In Berkley Heights (or maybe it's New Providence), try Trap Rock Brewery. Another brewpub that requires a bit of a drive is the Long Valley Brew Pub...it's actually a nice drive this time of year. It's in an old converted stone barn. In the summer, they have a nice patio. I think it's worth a trip. |

Why not go to Bunny's, or the Pub in Maplewood for a beer? Avoid the Gaslight! |

i've been to the trap rock before, and love it. but that's my backup pub. i'm not really keen on driving too far because my friends are driving out to see me. i'll take a look at the others on the list. mayhewdr, why avoid the gaslight completely?

Go to the Pub. It's right here, has great beers on tap and really good food. |

Lefty, some people said they've been treated rudely by the owner and bartender. I've never had any problems there and I like the place. Try the Ramstein Blonde...Brewed in Butler in NJ and I think it's the best beer on the planet. |

Lefty, The Gaslight is overpriced, has lousy food & rude service. In my book, those are 3 key reasons to avoid any eating/drinking establishment. Bunny's on the other hand, has great pizza (never really tried anything else), reasonable prices & friendly service. |

Lefty, There are very mixed feelings in the area on Gaslight. My friends and I always have a good time there. They are not friendly to people with children, but more often than not when I go, I'm not with little ones. I'm out to drink some good beer, have some good food and play bar games, like shuffle board, darts, foosball, etc. Though I also like Bunny's, Gaslight is more of a hanging out bar, in my mind. Go there sometime and see for yourself... |

They are EXTREMELY unpleasant to folks with kids in tow, even if they come in for dinner and sit in the dining room. Beyond that, the service is off-and-on; sometimes pretty good, sometimes rude. If you have a large party and only want to drink, they won't let you sit in the dining room, even after the kitchen is closed. We've asked many times - their excuse is they don't do table service when not serving meals. We say "we'll go to the bar for our drinks" and they STILL won't let us sit back there, even when there's a large party that can't possibly sit together near the bar (the largest tables near the bar are for 5 or 6, and are round, so you can't put 'em together). Their own beers are only okay ... the beers/ales/stouts on tap at St. James's Gate are far superior, even if they aren't brewed right here. |

Luanda writes: "... the beers/ales/stouts on tap at St. James's Gate are far superior, even if they aren't brewed right here." I live in SO and haven't done any drinking at St. James, but had a look inside. Uh, Guiness is ok, I suppose, but most of the other beers are nothing to get excited about (sadly, a recent vacation in Ireland convinced me that the Irish aren't too keen on the quality of what they drink...). Most of the imports we get here on draft are actually rather mediocre commercial products on their home turf (and this includes things like Boddington's). Why can't a place like St. James pour a few of the excellent local micros like the previously mentioned Ramstein, Climax (from Roselle Park), Victory, Yards, etc.? BTW, my take on the Gaslight beers: extremely variable. One would think a trained brewer with much experience would make more distinctive products with a greater degree of quality control. But they usually have at least one good guest beer (e,g, brewed elsewhere) - check out the cask conditioned ales - these can be superb when on form. Cheers, Joe Moryl |

I don't doubt there are far better beers than the ones the Pub carries. When they first opened, they had a stout - Beamish - that was light years better than Guinness - but they dropped it due to low sales (sigh). Nonetheless, having quaffed more than a few in both places, I stick by my verdict: the beers at St James's Gate are almost always much better than those at The Gaslight. AND, more importantly, the service at St James's Gate is everything you could ask for and more. The proprietors there, unlike the owners of The Gaslight, understand that they are in the hospitality business. |

luanda - we also mourn the loss of Beamish.. perhaps a grassroots movement could bring it back. We haven't been to The Gaslight in years - after trying several times and finding the food mediocre and the service indifferent. You're right - the Gate's owners are indeed friendly and hospitable. |

My wife and I have had good experiences in the Gaslight, although we've patronized only the restaurant, never the bar. The waiters have always been very friendly. The food, while not exceptional, is good. |

Bunny's, the Pub and Toro Loco have the nicest people. All three know us by sight. Toro Loco pretty much knows what we want before we speak, I really like their chicken fajitas, chix chimichangas, and the chix tacos (which I had last night for the first time) I think their food has greatly improved over what it was 5 years ago. Bunny's is always fun and I love their pizza and pitchers of beer. I really like the pub's steak and their chicken fingers, and their burgers, and their shepard's pie. Hmmm, so hungry. |

St. James Gate or Bunny's is the way to go locally. Both have good food and good people. The Gaslight has bad beer, unremarkable food and the owener is unpleasant. In my experience. I gave the gaslight a few tries, and never liked it. And yes, if you are up for a trip Krogh's is awesome.
There is. |

I agree with these last few posts. We tried the Gaslight several times, with our kids, and have crossed it off "the list." The beer there has never impressed me. Bunny's is great, especially if you have kids and sit in the no smoking room. We've eaten there many times, and are usually the only ones in the room. Their pies are good. The pub's food keeps improving. My first burger there was undercooked. Since then they've been excellent. Chicken fingers are great. Fish specials very good also. And booth 22 is one of the most kid friendly tables I've ever seen. And another thing, the Pub serves Courage, which, IMO, is a great beer. Good flavor and goes down smooth and easy. |
