I'm happy to see that Mac fans on this board have such a high percentage, something like 5 times Apple's actual market share. A sign of an enlightened group.

How about what flavor of windows that 71% likes best? Personally I like 2000 Pro very much, but would rather die than use '95 or '98.

Have to agree with you there, Tom. I'm using Windows 2000 too, but am in charge of supporting a mix of 9x machines on a Novell network. I've developed a healthy dislike for these OS's.

I'm with Tom and Villagenative. I can't stand using 9x anymore. Everyone likes to complain about Microsoft, but my biggest beef with them is that they have had a quality OS for years but they make it effectively unavailable to consumers. Fortunately, we're probably less than a year from the end of this with Whistler (now "Windows XP").

See http://www.zdnet.com/enterprise/stories/main/0,10228,2643428,00.html for a column I wrote on the subject.

Is anyone else surprised by how few people from South Orange are taking part in the "I live in:" poll? Is this indicative of the general level of interest (by town) in the bulletin board or has all the reval talk chased the S.O. residents away?

Maybe you should take a poll, Dave. Or maybe we've got the answer already...

It's probably due to the fact that Maplewood Online has been around for a while and there's no comparable SO web site.

How about a poll by age? i.e.

under 18, 18-25 ; 25-30 ; 30-40; 40 -50; 50-65; over 65?

marital status?

profession?

Nah. It just indicates that S. Orangites (Orangers? Oranginos? Orangeros? Orangians?) don't spend great hunks of their free time at keyboards. Why, I went ouside just last week!

The real question is: Who ARE these "Elsewhere" people? Are they posting or (even more insidious!) lurking from computers belonging to "relatives" in SO/Mplwd, taking advantage of our board's lack of restrictions on such outrageous and sinister behavior?! What are we paying taxes for???

Soda: Villagers was historically the term for those who lived in South Orange. Maplewoodian (just too cute) was the accepted term. But, then back in the dark ages, Maplewood had a "center" not a village. The village was a term exclusively used by South Orange. Some yuppies labeled Maplewood Avenue a village a few years back and it has stuck. To me, it will always be "the center."
Also back in those days, there was no east side or west side. We called districts by the schools - Jefferson area, Clinton area, etc. etc. That method certainly was more specific. I then lived in the Tuscan school area while now I find myself "in the middle."
Confusing times.

Soda,

I am one of those elsewhere (NJ) people. I work in the schools of SO/M, but do not live here. I didn't want to live in the same town as my students. It's enough that I see them at the mall, grocery store, Costco, etc, but I'd rather not live on their block, attend their church, etc. I need some sense of a personal life!

"Elsewhere people" could also be former residents who have moved away.

Spw (may I call you by your first name?):
What would you say to the proposal that all SO/Mplwd SD employees must reside within the district, just as we (supposedly) require of SD students? Seems a bit xenophobic to me, but at least in would increase the likelihood of employee prudence with (their own) hard-earned tax dollars.

Mtierney: Thanks for the very informative historical perspective. In the words of Johnny Carson, "I did not know that!"

Ffof - Good idea. Dave, there should probably be two other categories: "Not sure yet" (put me in that one) and "What Assessment?" (Hey, you never know...)

Ooh - here's another inspiration for a vote from one of the threads - SHOOT the deer(love those venison burgers!), CAPTURE the deer, or CONTINUE to let them graze, spread Lyme, cause accidents, leave droppings!

Dave, How often are you changing the poll? it seems that every time I log on, (which is way way too often), there is a new poll. Perhaps, they should stay up for 48 hours or so so that less frequent posters can get a chance to add their 2 cents.

Why is the "economy" poll still on when I visit? I'm using Netscape 4.75 (128-bit encryption), PC, I've cleared the cache. Any thoughts? I wanna pick my favorite salad dressing!

The salad dressing poll was at least a couple weeks ago. The economy poll is still the current one, although it is going a little stale.

I vote for dumping the annoying lead in to the reval thread - the one asking that we read reval 1 and 11 before posting a new message.
