It has been snowing hard since 6:00 P.M., and I live on a main street. The cars have been sliding around all night, the police had to help someone who was going up the road across from me. It is now 10:30 P.M. and I have YET to see a plow or a salt truck go by. Where are my tax dollars going??? And, in addition to which, when I will be paying $4000 more in taxes, will it be any better? I don't think so!! |

I live on Prospect St. -- a county road, mind you -- and since 8 pm I have seen just ONE snowplow go by (and I wouldn't miss one, given their flashing orange lights). Where I grew up, in way upstate New York (as in, Rochester) these roads would have been swept clean for hours by now. I agree, Nursie. This is ridiculous. My friendly neighbor who lends out his snowblower could have done better. |

I, on the other hand, was aware of plows since 6:00 or so, and I know they came more than once. I shovelled my sidewalk beautifully, finishing around 9:00, but when I went to bed about 10:00, I could see that the plow came by, and plowed everything from the street onto my sidewalk. You'd never know I spent any time on shovelling. |

My hubby left his job in NYC around 4 pm yesterday, spent hours in the tunnel, exiting the tunnel and on Route 280. He finally got home around 1 am. Said 280 was a mess, westbound cars couldnt get up the hill between exit 10 and 8. (Northfield and Prospect Ave). If the interstate is horrible, I can onlly imagine what the local roads are like. Thank goodness the schools are already closed! |

Ahhhh .... The train. With all the bitching about NJ Transit, they did a great job getting me home last night. Got on the 5:45 wasin Maplewood at 6:15. We sped right by all that 280 traffic. |

Algebra2, my husband and I were on that train too. Wasn't it great when the conductor said, "Look at all that traffic on 280, folks, and be glad you took the train"? Ahh, the few and far-between sweet glories of mass transit... |

Maybe the town has diverted the money into the reval lawyers account. |

I don't know what time the plows got started on Academy St / Sherman Place, but they must have roared and banged their way past my house at least 15 times between 11:30 and 1:30 am. Jeez, guys, you've done all you can, let me sleep already!! Go plow where they need you!! ARRGH!! |

Note, the only reason I can think of for the plows to come by that much during that time is that someone was out there trying to shovel out the snow at the end of his/her driveway. |

Overtaxed - you're right. I've always had a suspicion about the plows lurking around and waiting for us to shovel the driveway/sidewalk. That's why I snuck out last night at 4:00 am, and shoveled as quietly and quickly as I could. Then I ducked back in the house to wait. Just as I poured myself another bottle of pinot noir, a plow came sneaking down the street, straight towards my house, and obliterated my work. I had such a headache this morning! |

Mem: Penoit Noir? 4:00am? Could I suggest a good 12 step program?

Bobk, Bacata has already signed me up for the program, and keeps me in line when I fall too far from the wagon. I'm stuck on step three, which is where I have to denounce friends that drink. It gets pretty lonely sometimes, sitting here all by myself, watching the snow plows. By the way, I highly recommend most of Stag's Leap's reds, which I can't afford anymore while budgeting for reval. For my trips off the wagon, I now stock up on screw top jug wine, attractively packaged in a brown bag. |

My friends in the UK enjoy Shag's Sheep (say it ten times fast), while my new budget makes ample allowance for Slag's Heap. |

I have to disagree with you nursie. I saw the plows go by more than one time and they went by most of the night. Good job to the guys plowing and salting. |

That was my experience, too, Uncleelmer. We had a horrible time coming through Irvington at 7 p.m., mostly the top of 18th Ave. Spent a half hour trying to climb 2 blocks, could not get through, cars sliding around 3 abreast, etc. Kid screaming in the back seat how we were never going to get home, etc. Finally was able to turn around and go back down the hill and around over to Clinton. Did not, of course, venture out by car for the rest of the evening. Heard the plows off and on all night and by morning the road was completely clear! Just had to shovel between the sidewalk and the street again to get the car out of the driveway. Here we go again tonight. But it sounds like it will be icing rather than snow. (I prefer the snow both for driving and for fun.) We'll see! Bacata |
