It made me shudder to think of the land fill space we need for all our garbage. |

I think the East side is best deal in town!!!! As a former "starving artist," I am used to evaluating neighborhoods as potential "good deals". For years, I lived south of park slope in a huge apartment (about the same square footage as my current house) that would have cost me double the rent in the Slope. We waited too long to buy there (one day my husband spotted four McLaren strollers coming down the street we knew our window of opportunity had passed) but we managed to move here before the recent huge price increases (about three years ago). If I were moving to Maplewood today, I would not be able to afford the street I now live on. But, I would definitely be checking out the East Side! The place has tons of potential. The houses are cute and affordable, the streets are clean (compared to my old Brooklyn neighborhood they are antiseptic), the taxes are going down, and the elementary school has the best teachers. What's not to like? Sure, the west side is more attractive, but I couldn't afford the utility bill for one of those houses, never mind the mortgage. Beauty and suitable neighborhoods are relative terms. I can understand why P_Man would feel uncomfortable going from the spaciousness and serenity of Chatham to the more likely to be lively and closely spaced houses of the East side. But, anyone moving here from The City (who liked it there-not like P_Man) with a housing budget under $200,000 (possibly way-under) may consider the streets of the East side paved with gold! |

Nan: It is nice to hear a positive voice. I agree, the eastside offers a lot of opportunities for those on a limited budget. Maybe we should try to promote it as an alternative to Brooklyn, etc. for artists. And, hey, an epiphany, those stores on Springfield would make real nice galleries. What with Soho, Dumbo, Hoboken, etc. priced out of reach for many, maybe we can become SOHO west. And the taxes are coming down. |

Gee, do you think the realtors will "steer" to the east side because lower taxes are coming soon? |

P man, I don't understand your comments. One minute your saying that not everyone on the west side is a snob and you are defending your neighbors and the next minute your telling us that your neighbors didn't even say hello for two years. Why do you think they avoided you for two years? |

Yes, my neighbors here in Maplewood are wonderful. I had spoken to them more in the first month of living here than I did in the two years in Chatham. |

P-man: I grew up in Chatham and---here I am! My best friend from seventh grade on just moved here last month. All we did was walk around (to nowhere, mind you) and misbehave in the woods and in houses where the parents were away. Oh yeah, we would also hitchhike to see who would pick us up and GET US OUT OF THERE!!! I'm hoping things will be different for my little ones here. BobK: Your idea for revitalizing Springfield Ave is the best one I've heard yet. That was the "hook " M-SO was using for a while--appeal to creative types. |

By the way, I did attend a Hilton Neighborhood association meeting and was somewhat disappointed in the attendance. Also, considering the cultural diversity of this neighborhood, I was a bit taken back by the lack of minority participation. I appreciate everyone's response to my original message. I suspect that no matter where you live, there will be people with whom you get along and other with whom you don't. I have some neighbors for whom I'd do anything and others whom I be happy to see leave. One question more. How will we keep Springfield Ave in Maplewood from becoming like Springfield Ave in Irvington? |

Promoting Springfield Ave. as and the "east side" as a home for creative NY transplants is an excellent idea. New technology types should also be included in that. |

i love nan's vision. however, do new technology types have any money these days? (grins) we're probably better off with artists. |

For once in a long time I'm actually smiling reading a thread on maplewood on-line....so refreshing..thank you.... The east side is maplewood's best kept secret! I've spoken with a few people who didn't even know where the community center is. Maybe with the building of the sports facility on rutgers will be a nice addition also! |
