Oh dear, I am the offspring of a Dubya disciple! And while I love the USA, it once held that all roads lead to Rome and that the sun never set on the British empire. We maybe be great, we may be grand, but I am suspicious of our intentions overseas -- or that I am wary of what's in it for some people with a lot of money and influence. And perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't feel that we're getting the whole picture here, and without that I don't know how I can even form an informed opinion. In terms of international affairs, it's pretty apparent that the most of the world looks at us with distaste -- as bullies and opportunists, who yes, do many good things with our wealth but who are also so committed to maintaining that wealth that we will do so at the expense of people halfway around the world. We will give autocrats weapons, then call them leaders of the axis of evil years later, and fight them with American-made weapons firing in both directions. I am glad Saddam Hussein is gone, but I would be happy to have any of the dictators, so many of whom we befriend for own convenience but who guarantee there people sparse human rights, out of power as well. And we can't be the world's policemen. If anything, that's what the U.N. is for -- but we made it clear that we'll do what we want regardless of international opinion. This president has set us back to a near Cold War mentality, and has set a burden -- both financial and diplomatic -- with which my generation will have to grapple in decades to come. I would like to add, that while I disagree with Mr. May's zealous affections for Bush, he is perhaps The Greatest Dad In The World, and that's no small accomplishment. Dad, I'll see you at the convention. I'll have my "Hillary in 2008" button on. ;) Michaela May |

Michael, here is a good site that will help you form an opinion. http://www.middleeastdaily.com/ It's not all good news, but I think you will find the willingness of Libya and Iran to allow nuclear inspections along with the agreement of Afghanistan on a new Constitution as positive steps.

Little May, Listen to your PA. He's a Repubican because he's been around long enough and understands events you have yet to experience. I was once like you, I thought I knew it all and my Parents were old school. As I matured into a man I began to realize I was exactly like my parents, in more ways then I can count. That's why both my Father and I remind all to vote... BUSH/CHENEY IN 2004.. |

cjc, when you talk about recounts in the counties specified by Gore, you are absolutely correct. But that's not what I'm talking about, there are other scenarios, including a statewide recount, that could well have played out. Coulda/woulda/shoulda. No question it was Bush up there on the podium last inauguration day, but the methods used by the GOP in Florida were neither fair nor square. "Let's not elect him in 2004, either" |

Why can't you point your finger at the real idiot -- Gore and his team? The voter-intimidation and disenfranchisement claims to my knowledge have never been born out in court. And in your 'fair and square' broadside, you fail to mention the military ballots of all those people you supposedly support in theory but not in their current endeavor in Iraq that Gore fought not to recognize. Before you can fix things, you have to accurately assess the reasons for your duress. Bush is not your problem, your candidates and the political ineptitude of the Dem precinct workers in FL are and were. |

Back to coments on youthful naivete, or whatever you might call it, perhaps people tend to grow more conservative with age as a mechanism to make amends with a frightening world in there is a large, scary contrast between the haves and the have-nots? As a side note, my mom has become more liberal in recent years ... She said 9/11 opened her eyes to the U.S.'s role in the world. Little May |

I think Cheney should consider retiring. His health problems are one reason, but the Republican Party needs to begin preparing for the 2008 campaign. Since it appears obvious that Hillary may be running then, why not run Condeleeza Rice as V.P.? Or Rudy? Or Colin Powell? This may be a perfect opportunity to position the party for the future. |

While I'm not a Republican, I think Don is right as a matter of strategy. Could it be that they think its better not to rock the boat now and will replace Cheney after the election if they win? Its hard to beleive the Repubs would want to go into 2008 with Cheney as veep if they win in 2004. |

Don, none of the people you mention are acceptable to the religious right wing of the GOP. The same thing happened to Tom Ridge, who I really respect for giving up a nice governors chair for a thankless task at Homeland Security, when his name was floated during the last election. Personally, I find this a shame and a further sign of the Balkanization of America.

I don't think the republican party should start worrying about the 2008 campaign until they win in 2004. The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today..FDR.. Can't switch out Cheney for someone like Rudy, Condy or Colin -- they won't pass the white conservative litmus test their far right following would demand. Unfortunately. |

Interestingly George Sr. was the only VP since Martin Van Buren to be become POTUS immediately following a term as VP, without the death of the incumbent. And it makes sense -- a it would be unusual for Americans not to want a shake-up, and a VP might have a hard time distancing himself from 8 years of a presidency. Nixon was elected president 12 years after he served under Eisenhower as VP. By the way, other presidents who served as VP and then POTUS without the death of a president are Adams, Jefferson and Van Buren. (The things you can learn from the Internet are amazing). That said, I agree about Cheyney's role in '04. I think the guy is stodgey, and every time I hear something new about Halliburton, I cringe. Colin Powell doesn't look like a likely candidate given his persistence that he would not consider the role. Given the need for Democrats to seize the Midwest, I wonder if the GOP should opt for someone from that region. I also wonder if Rice would be likely -- does anyone think that having a black woman on the ticket would make some conservative voters uneasy. Even if race is less of issue than it used to be, I think women are often unconciously held to a different standard. Our society holds powerful women to a different standard than their male counterparts. Look at Hillary Clinton -- do you honestly think she would be greeted with the same disdain from conservatives if she were a man? Perhaps the GOP knows what they're doing keeping Cheyney. While it's questionable whether he'll help much in '04, given that VP's have so little success running for president, maybe they'll have better luck with a fresh face. I hope not, though. |

Just a few comments on someone's post above: We need the UN for international decisions?? France was doing deals with Hussein, that's why they didn't join us in the battle for freedom. You think US should partner with them? Ha! Look at nations cowering to Bush now for what he's asking for. Never happened to Clinton, except in China, and I don't want to go there... more later, kid calling |

Kenny's Realization Casserole Brown 2 lb. of ground Kenny rump in a skillet with a big heap of lard. Squeeze out a healthy dollop of anchovie paste, and a splash of vinegar. Dump in a can of mushroom soup. Mix well, top with Velveeta and garnish with pickled strawberries. Bake at 375 until realization occurs. Serve in front of TV using hands as utensils while making grunting noises. |
