Thanks to all for comments and suggestions. I am a married 40 yr. old from the south (born there). Spent first 10 yrs. of life in the midwest, then back to south. Seven or 8 years later I took the bus to the Port Authority and have been either in NYC or North Jersey since. Lack drawl because of midwest childhood and educated parents?... Found out about you from my lovely bride.... |

I apologize for being impolite and not introducing myself before I began posting here, but once you start it does become infectious. The basics are that I currently live in MSH and have been reading and enjoying the posts on MOL for about three years, only deciding to actually post here after reading the MSH school election postings in April, because I thought another voice should be heard on these boards on our educational and town issues. Since some of the opinions that I express, and will express, will no doubt be unpopular among some in my community, I sadly cannot give out too much info about me. But I can say many of the things in my life are very different from what I expected when I started out.I guess you can say I have had three lives so far, and that I am currently very much enjoying my third, here in our part of NJ, and the great USA. We all live in an incredibly wonderful area: MSH, Maplewood, and SO. We have a beautiful housing stock, tremendous amenities, and great people. So if I post on other town threads as well, don't be offended. I am doing so based on my admiration of your town, not to diss it. My interests are fine wine and dinning, opera, intelligent discussion and disagreement, architecture, planning, construction, and real estate issues. It also includes literature and the arts, and some politics. Thank you in advance for your courtesies to me, or your tolerance of my opposing opinions.

Factvsfiction: Welcome to MOL. I for one have enjoyed your posts thus far and look forward to many more discussions with you. Fresh viewpoints are always welcome. A word of warning. Our real life and virtual communities merge to such a degree that it won't be long before someone makes the connection between your dual identities. Therefore, it is a good idea to think of the impact of what you are writing before you post, even if you have adopted a user name other than that which you use IRL. Joan |

Hello All, Just arrived in the neighborhood and have already done a bit of research on the mundane aspects of finding a doc, vet, and salon via the board. Thanks for the info. Although not what you might label a 'regular poster', I do hope to share with the community. Thanks for the opportunity to network. Welcome Regina: A word of warning: A lot of people who began on MOL by reading "Please Help" type posts have ended up with a serious addiction to posting here; but, never fear there is a 12 step program in the Attic for those who find they need help controling the constant urge to post. |

hello to all, so, i don't live in the area - south jersey born and raised (philly/cherry hill area). i joined because i'm starting at seton hall for grad school this fall, and i've really fallen in love with the area. i'm hoping to find a studio or one bedroom to rent in the south orange or maplewood area - it's just such a cute, nice area, and the people i met seemed *really* friendly!! i've heard some good things about millburn/short hills, too, though i haven't gotten to go there yet. anyway, hello again. maybe we'll be neighbors soon? |

Heather, good luck! South Jersey is like another state, but you will find things are much better up here. (In my opinion anyway) Even a studio in this area can be expensive, but if you look around enough I'm sure you will find something. I am finishing up at SHU right now, and have just a few classes left as I am on a bit of a delayed program. If you have any questions feel free to send me a email through MOL. I'd be happy to help you with any questions you have. Also, as a side note, this message board can be pretty nasty, so try to take everything you read here with a grain of salt.

thanks mayor mccheese! i wonder what parts of south jersey you've seen? though it is a totally different state. i think the reason i liked maplewood so much right away is because it reminds me of some of the little historic towns in my area - collingswood or haddon heights. anyway, thanks for the offer of help. maybe when i have some definite places in mind, you can give me the low-down on the areas? |

OK. So I am close to 400 posts (399 of which have probably need in the last 2 months!!) and I have only NOW spied the introduce yourself section.... I live in South Orange and have done so for about 3 1/2 years. Originally from England, my Husband and I have been in the States for about 13 years. We have two lovely and active daughters. MOL showed me a year ago what it means to reach out to a stranger. I lost my wedding ring in my garden and after a day of searching it was no-where to be found. In desparation I bought a metal detector which was worse than useless... I posted on MOL asking if anyone knew how to really use it. People I didn't know offered to help me, to come and crawl around my yard for no reason except to help someone in need... It really took my breath away.... Fiona |

Yes! it was the weirdest thing - I had 3 friends come over, over two days, we wer all walking a grid, my Husband did the same, and there was no sign... I then bought the metal detector which was worse than useless...I will say that I threw the ring in anger never giving a thought to it "going awol"....I felt terrible... on the third day I finally gave up and thought that a squirrel/groundhog/racoon etc had seem something nice and shiny and made off with it....the reason for me throwing it had also been resolved. I stood in the garden almost in tears with a friend after another 2 hours of searching and said that I really wished I could find it. I turned round and there it was sitting on top of about 5 blades of grass in clear view with a ray on sun shining right on it.... Now, we had walked a grid for 3 days, been on our hands and knees for 3 days, a metal detector for a day... all of these were over this area. To this day I wonder "how" it got there..... |

MC0218, Welcome. I moved from Walker Road of the Gregory section. I guess, "Upper" but we never called it that. One thing you will notice: about 10 pm a person with a sweatsuit with the hood up jogs around the neighborhood in the dark. When I first saw it I thought it was really creepy. We called him-her-it the "una-jogger."
Actully harmless. J.B. |

Hello All, My partner Gilbert and I are very excited to move to South Orange. We are moving from Riverdale in the Bronx to a lovely Tudor home with our Black Lab "Buddy". We have been reading the Home Fix-It as well as the South Orange threads for a while and have found them very helpful and a bit entertaining... Thank you! All the best, David&Gilbert |

Hello, My name is Jaime and although born and raised in Maplewood i am not currently a resident. After graduating from Columbia High School (1994) i moved to further my education. My mother and uncle still resides in Maplwood so i am around often. What brought me to the board was some recent events at my mothers home in which i felt the need to come to her aid. When i was attending Tuscan School in the 80's my father suffered a stroke and since then my mother was basically a single parent. While i was attending Maplewood Middel school she also adopted another son that was kicked out by his parents home two houses away. Of course this was weird for me at the time but i now see why she did it. Basically with my father sick my mother was taking care of three people by herself. Add to that in the 90's she had two students from Russia come to live with us as part of a student exchange program. Recently she has had "visits" from various men, who when confronted who would just say "i'm just doing my job". These men are on her property taking pictures and refuse to say who, or where they are from. Narurally when i heard this i told her to call the police. Turns out they were Maplewood building inspectors as she recieved tickets for various offenses. How can you come on someones property and not explain who you are? One of the tickets was for a "expired inspection sticker" on a vehicle i had parket at my mothers house. I called the Maplewood Police Department numerous times and was told as long as it remains on private property the sticker does not have to be current as long as the vehicle was registered, which it was. I also spoke directly to the Chief of MPD, a wonderfull man, who said just go to court and explain the situation and there wouldn't be a problem. Well i did, and there was. I was told by the judge the MPD's job is to inforce the law not explain it to me. I was always told if you needed to know if something is legal or not just ask a police officer. Apparently this is not the case. I want to make it clear that the MPD are great people. My issue is not with them at all. The judge asked why i never removed the vehicle i replied " A man, who wouldn't identify himself, walked onto my mothers property and told her the vehicle had to me removed. Confused i called the MPD who said they didn't know who the man was but the vehicle can stay". Did i not follow procedure? If the man said who he was maybe this could have all been avioded. Concerned for his mother, Jaime p.s. To add insult to injury she just revieved a "water on the pool cover" citation. As we all know it rained the day before. Sounds like harassment to me. Also she recieved a "retaining wall unsound" citation but two of three contractors backed out of doing the job because the Building's Department will not return their calls. |

Jaime, I posted the above very late last night, and it was supposed to be funny. Today it just reads as insensitive. I appologize. You should copy and paste the paragraph above into another post in either "Please Help" or "Soapbox". People will read it and respond. J.B. Sorry your mother is having such trouble. |
