Jersey_Boy, Well yeah she does.lol...I didn't take it as insenitive at all but thanks for the apology. I believe it is the house that you are thinking about. It's a tudor on prospect st. with a large front lawn (right accross from Elmwood ave). Or as the buildings department says "an unkept dump that brings down the property value in the area". Now i'm not a expert but i definatly think it's one of the nicer houses on prospect (although there are a lot of great houses on that block). |

Jaime: Have you spoken with any of the township committee members about your mother's situation? One or more of them might be able to look into the situation from a wider perspective than a single agency head and at least let you know what the problem(s) are. Then you could work with her to develop a plan to address them. Good luck to you and your mother. |

Scully, I'm not really sure but it started happening all at once so something definatly happened. I know her next door neighbor is a contractor (who works with the buildings department for permits) and they got into a recent spat but i personally never had a problem with him. It's the normal neighbor complaints....my mother doesn't like him sawing wood everyday at 5:00am and he doesn't like when she playes classical music when she works outside. I can understand both of their points. But after their latest spat all of this happened. Again this is just speculation. I actually spoke with the cheif of police (very nice man) and he told me to just go to court and explain the situation and it wouldn't be a big deal. Well i did and the judge was treating me like i murdered someone. I was there for a expired inspection sticker on a car i was restoring. The judge told me that even though i cleared it with the police it's not their job to know the law, just to enforce it. That was i needed to hear.lol. It was obvious i was getting fined regardless, which i was. I then asked how long untill i needed to have the car inspected and he laughed and said "by the end of the day". Now i do know another car in the same area that the sticker has been expired for years but i would never rat on anybody else. I know buildings know of it because i was there when they did an inspection on their property. The inspector's name is Calafano. I pulled him aside after court and explained to him all of this could have been avioded if he just rung our bell and explained any infractions. He didn't seem like a bad guy but he also demanded that the judge fine me.lol Joan, No i haven't but it's a great idea. Thank all of you for your comments and support. Jaime |

Jaime, I know the house, and there's nothing about it that seem particularly or exceptionally unkempt. Although, what you describe does sound like somebody must have called the town. Can't imagine any other reason for the sudden "interest" in what's going on on your mother's property. While it's unfortunate, at this point it seems like there's no other alternative but to try to comply. |

Hello everyone. I'm new here to Maplewood and MOL and I love both. You guys are a hoot. Although some of the neighbors have questionable taste in curb appeal if you know what I mean. I am sure in time they will see it my way. Could you give me some pointers on how I gain access into the IN crowd. I really need a bump up my stock. This Tiki bar sounds interesting. Where do I sign? Humbly submitted |

Hello all, We (myself, husband & two boys) are getting set to move to Maplewood after spending almost a year renting in Summit and originally moving from Oregon. After living in Oregon for the first 35 years of my life, I'm still adjusting to this coast. We're really excited to move to Maplewood as it reminds us quite a bit of our old neighborhood in Portland - the house we bought even has the same color porch. Info on home projects, school & community issues (and a good laugh sometimes) would be my main motiviations for joining this group. Looking forward to getting to know you! |

Welcome!!! Hope the move goes well, although I'd guess Summit to Maplewood hardly has the hassle value of going from one coast to another. How old are the kids? |

Thanks Scully & Dave for the welcome! The boys are 2 & 6. My oldest will be going to Marshall next year. The move is less terrifying this time, although still a big pain in the (insert bodypart here) |

Hi Shanabana, Thanks for the welcome! I'm from Portland, spent lots of time in Eugene though (my grandparents lived there). That's very cool that you went to U of O (I have to admit that I'm a Beaver - whoo hoo on the whole College World Series thing). I hope we meet too! |

Cis4Cookie: I'm not sure what "in group" you are referring to in your above post. This is a wide open board and anyone can jump in at any time. If you are asking how to gain name recognition on the message board, the best way is to: 1. Develop a unique posting style that reflects your personality. 2. Use spell check and grammar check as needed -- English usage counts on this board. 3. Start a blog in which you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about YOU. 3. Choose one or more sections of the message board which especially interest you and post to it/them frequently, being careful to stay on topic when possible. 4. Start new threads on matters which interest you and are likely to interest others on the board as well. 5. Don't be afraid to ask for help or offer advice. If you are asking how you can participate in IRL activities that attract MOL posters: 1. Check out the virtual cafe, please help, dining and entertainment sections of the board since most IRL activities are likely to be announced in one or more of these sections of the board. 2. If an event is announced on the message board, the assumption is that it is open to anyone reading the message board who wants to participate, unless otherwise stated. If you wish to attend/participate, especially if an RSVP is requested/required, send a private line message to the host/organizer to indicate your interest. 3. Frequent regular MOL hangouts mentioned in the above threads. Identify yourself as an MOLer and ask if any other MOLers are present. Get to know these persons. 4. Volunteer to help with community projects sponsored by MOLers and announced on the Message Board. Does Wendy need more help with the 4th of July Celebration? She said she was still short handed. Do you have something you can bring to the collection Barbara and SAC's girl scouts will be conducting? Enter the baking contest and meet at least two MOLers who will be administering the event. Attend Justmelaura's fundraiser. Volunteer to help Lydia with her project to aid the flood victims in Tulip's area, etc. Being a recognized part of the MOL community is all about being active in our community on and off line. Welcome to MOL. I look forward to meeting you.

Joan Well my comment about the IN crowd was meant as a light and breezy segue onto the message board and I do realize that MOL is 'wide-open.' Basically, I'd nothing better to say. And I suspect it won't be the last time that happens. I did not expect such an orderly and well thought out response. Next time I will be on my toes and expect the unexpedted. Wow, MOL IS like a box a chocolates. Thank you for the suggestions I will take each point under advisement. Enjoy Independence Day |

Cis4cookie: Thanks have a great 4th of July. I hope you and your family will be joining the rest of the town at the 4th of July Celebration which has activities through out the day, highlighted by a circus (already set up in Memorial Park) and fire works. Even if you can't make the festivities tomorrow try going past the park today and checking out the camels. For details on the 4th of July Celebration check out the July 4th thread in the Arts and Entertainment section of the message board. There should also be an information link on the MOL home page. Enjoy! |

Welcome, Rita. There are other nanny groups, for sure, because there are lots of nannies right here in South Orange and Maplewood. These groups are in-person and online. I don't know where you should start your search, though. Perhaps some people here with nannies can help. I suggest you ask in the Please Help section of this messageboard. Teenagers hang out on Maplewood Ave in Maplewood on Friday and Saturday nights. It's good clean fun. And once you make some friends (or even before you do), you can take trips into NYC.

Hi there -- I'm new in Maplewood. I'm interested in finding some new local friends (mostly in the 40+ crowd if there is such a crowd. I'm 41.). I'm really keen on getting in shape and am most interested in cycling, tennis, squash, and walking. I'd also like to meet new friends just in general. Can anyone suggest activities and/or social venues that I might look into? As I've browsed through the discussion forums and blogs on MOL, it looks like people sometimes gather at Bunnies. I will be taking down part of an old fence this evening after work, and then I thought I might drop by there. Would anyone care to join me? One of my favorite topics of conversation these days is how much I am enjoying working on my "new" old house, but I can talk about other things as well! Many thanks, Angela |

Welcome, Angela. I'm taking a bike ride or two this weekend and would welcome you (and all others) as a partner. I'd like to go for 15 to 40 miles. Are you up to that?

Thanks for the welcome, Tom. I have some contractors coming on Saturday, but could ride on Sunday if that is convenient for you and others who might join in. As I mentioned, I'm still getting in shape, so 40 miles might be a bit too much. The most I've ever done was 27 miles and that was a few lbs and 5 years ago. I'm fairly sure I could handle 15 miles, tho. I have a mountain bike at the moment (in the market for a used road bike), so you might have to go slower than you'd like. If it still sounds like it would be a challenging enough ride, I'd be up for it.

After living the majority of my life in Maplewood, I have just discovered this site. I am not very advanced when it comes to technology or computers (I finally got a DVD player last year). What a wonderful site! I recognize some of the posters here and have had fun reading some the posts on line over the past few days. I wish I had found this years ago when I moved back. I just wanted to say "hi" and introduce myself. I grew up in Maplewood and graduated from Columbia High School. I moved away for about seven years, but moved back before my children started school. They are now both in middle school and I am so happy I made the choice to move back. |

Thank you, Joan. I look forward to posting and hearing from others. I have had a rare day today with nothing to do. The kids have friends over and are well-occupied. I have been spending the afternoon reading old posts and just throughoughly enjoying myself. I love reading the threads about the restaurants and stores now and in the past. It has brought back some great memories. Someone had mentioned Jimmie Buffs. When I was a young child, that was one of my parent's favorite places to get food from. There used to be a Bamberger's in Newark and we would stop by on our way home to get the "combination" sandwich. Oh, but should I introduce my children to those delightfully greasy sandwiches? |

Hi! My name is Dani and my husband, Corey, and I just moved to Maplewood. We are very excited to be part of the community. We are in the midst of moving from Rego Park, Queens to Maplewood and the final push will come on Saturday. Can't wait! I am so sick of my apartment building - small, unfriendly, and very close to an expressway so I just feel like I am being polluted. Each time we visit our new home and come back here I just wish the whole move was over already! Corey and I are both teachers in the city and we are going to be commuters. I am looking forward to some lazy summer days (after summer school teaching is over) to just chill out in Maplewood. We are currently looking for a plumber and wondering how people feel about the cable service around here - what is good, what is bad? (I will also look for a plumber on the home improvement section). Thanks all! |

Hi Danielle! Welcome! My husband and I are sort of new to the homeowner thing too (it's been a couple years since we moved from the city!) and we used Gateway Plumbing and heat a few times and have always had a good experience. They've even told us a few times when we DIDNT need something!! As far as cable, we have directv--and love it. With all this horrible weather, it's only gone out on us once! Welcome to the neighborhood! |
