Hi! My name is Judie. My family and I will be moving to Maplewood at the end of July. We're moving from Park Slope Brooklyn and apparently there are many former Brooklynites here. I've been corresponding with a few people who are moving to Maplewood within the next few months and we decided to start a specific yahoo group called From Brooklyn to NJ. Anyone is invited to join: frombrooklyntonj-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

I hope it was ok that I posted that site.

We are so excited to move and make new friends!!

Judie

Hi all!
My husband Greg and I have lived here for 6 years and pardon our delay in joining the "board". We have two sons, 5 and 1 and life is good here in our beautiful old house in good old Maplewood....now, on another note...we are starting to do some major projects with our property - fencing, electrical, plumbing, bathroom remodel, basement waterproofing, etc....(and I am sure you know how long the "etc.'s" go on and on....) ha ha Look forward to connecting with everyone while getting some good information from my posts in the future. Take care.

Troy and Judie, welcome to town. Deirdra, welcome to MOL. You will find the "Please help" and the "Home Fix-it" sections immensely helpful. I read about all the fix-it projects, even the ones not currently relevant to my house, because I learn so much from them.

I've lived in Maplewood for one year, so I'm a relative newcomer, too.

Laura:

Check out the Arts, Entertainment, Dining, and Travel section of the Board. You will find a number of threads there on the subject of brunch places. If you don't see what you need, just start a new thread.

Hi

My wife and I moved here mid-October from Lancaster, PA. New job (in NYC) brought us to these parts. Friends in the city recommended we check out Maplewood, and after we saw it there was really never any other choice as to where we'd live.

I read the boards here a good bit before we moved, but am only just now getting around to joining up and logging on. Looking forward to hanging out with you guys some.

Welcome Brick Pig! This a great time of year to get out and about and discover what is so special about our two towns.

Joan,
Very true.
We attended a neighborhood party this weekend, and everyone we met was just great. We're happy to be here and looking forward to being a part of the community.

My husband and I are first-time homebuyers looking for a place to settle down for a good number of years. Like Brick Pig, we find it very difficult to entertain the thought of any place other than Maplewood/South Orange now that we know it exists! It is only the steep prices that are giving us doubts. I would appreciate any information on the community to help in our decision.

A little about us:
I am a graphic designer at the moment but writing is my passion. I am considering teaching art or English in the future. My husband Matt is a "multimedia specialist" at a professional camera company but is really a fine art photographer in the way that I am really a writer. I grew up in Hunterdon County (on a small sheep farm) and went to college for writing at the New School. Matt was born in the Adirondacks, moved to Hunterdon, spent a year in Denmark after high school and then got his associate's degree in fine art from Raritan Valley. We have been renting in Westfield since 1997 and married since 2000. I'm 29 and he is 28.

I used to be 28. And my husband used to be 29 too! But that was so long ago, that you're making me kind of jealous!

17 years since then and multitudes of kids later, we've been happy in Mapwd for 14 years/2 houses.

Good people. Easy town. And S.O. is not bad either

Tara:

There are a fair number of professional writers living in Maplewood and South Orange. Ditto, a fair number of people who work in photography and and graphic design. You should both find plenty of opportunities for exchange of ideas and networking in your chosen fields of interest if you choose to relocate here.

I am new to the message board. Has anyone had a good experience with a driveway contractor lately? I need to have my driveway repaved. However, the last contractor I contacted never showed up after agreeing upon a price and promising to begin work in May. I would appreciate any help.

Andrew:

Post your driveway contractor question in Home Fix It. You will get a much better response there.

My wife and I are moving to Maplewood in August, and I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion about direct tv versus cable. I've only had cable in the city for internet access, so if I go with direct tv, what other options for high speed internet access are available in Maplewood? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Brian - you may get better response in the "Please Help" section with your question, but I can tell you that DSL is available from several different carriers. Probably the biggest customer base for Verizon, but I and a number of others on this board use Speakeasy (www.speakeasy.net) and like it very much. I think there are other choices also. You can get some package deals with Verizon for telephone and dsl service and I have heard that their service is improved over a couple of years ago when I was looking into DSL and decided against them. Good luck figuring it all out!

Thanks, Joan & ffof. From all that I have heard about the community, I am sure that we will be in our element there and I very much hope that we find the right house. ffof, I'm jealous too--you already live there!

And in the small world department, regarding Troy's post above: Bonnie van Rensburg of Morrow Methodist was our family's favorite hairdresser for many years and I went to school with one of her sons--in Flemington!

Tara,

If you can find a way to buy in one of these two towns, you may be well rewarded. The prices are high and climbing fast, and that makes things seem unaffordable, but just think of the return on your investment if the prices keep rising. Of course, there's no guarantee that they will, and you can't exactly turn that return into cash for a long time. Another small bit of advice: remember that property taxes have risen a lot lately, and they could continue to.

I've been here a year and I hope I can stay for a while.

Hey, Westfield ain't bad! I wish I lived there when I was your age.

Tom
