thank you, dave. could you please post some rules on use of the word "actually"; possibly require the user to reveal details of his/her upbringing and education. may the force be with you |

has anybody mentioned lately that this site is looking really spiffy? The summary of what's going on is a hoot. The logo is really growing on me and a few of the banners are eyecatching! dave and jamie, happy new year! |

Quick announcement to anyone who has tried to register for a username recently and who is a Comcast customer: I have attempted to send confirmation notes to you about the activation of your message board account and they have bounced back to me. Everyone on Comcast with @home or @comcast.net addresses should test them to see if they're working properly. Also, I've noticed one or two email addresses with typos, which would also prevent receiving username/password information. Hope this helps. |

Dave, How about adding a 'Hard' folder under 'Official Maplewood' for Suggestions to the Town? Putting it there would also need an agreement with the TC that someone from the town would read the suggestions and respond to them. I would add to that, that the suggestion box is to place a suggestion, and receive a reply. Discussions on suggestions should be held elsewhere, such as 'Soapbox'. |

Interesting idea. I'll think about it. The only thing I'm not comfortable with is 'requiring' anything of anyone. This has always been a voluntary participation message board and while I like to nudge people to use it, I'd never want to make any of it mandatory for anyone. |

Great idea, George. With Vic and Jerry reading the board regularly, I think we can assume that postings to a suggestion box in official Maplewood would be seen. Since feedback and/or action resulting from suggestions would be voluntary, there should be no real pressure on anyone. |

Dave, Since I am running for Township Committee this year, could you also put up an "Ask Sbenois" folder? As you know, I'm always more than happy to provide concrete answers to virtual questions. |

On the heels of the discussion we had about a business incubator, I was thinking about how to use MOL to highlight potentially growing businesses in Maplewood and South Orange. I was wondering if the "Work" and "Classifieds" areas might be defined in a way that had "Work" address opportunities for home-based businesses while "Classified" is the "Need a summer job" or "Want a part-time assistant" area. The thinking was inspired in part by a great thread (started by Dave) on the way businesses are changing travel plans post 9-11. I was trying to come up with a way to add some focus without changing the MOL structure. If the delineation doesn't fly, maybe we start an "Incubator" area. As the thread says, a suggestion. |

Brian: Since "Work" is a members only part of the board, I am not sure that you would want to use it for the purpose of highlighting opportunities for homebased businesses since you would be reaching a limited audience. If you don't mind limiting your readership, it would probably be more effective to use one or more dedicated threads in the work section than take it over completely. Even then, there is no guarantee that such a section of the board would be safe from thread drift or posts regarding the latest of SBenois' entrepeneurial enterprises. |

lol.. true. Dave was at the same meeting and may have better ideas than I offered. I was impressed by his long-ago post on the new world of work, and it got me thinking. |

Dearest Joan Crystal, Joanie, why the hostility? Didja ever notice that there are some sections of this board that are immune to my burgeoning empire? Dave, the Kingest of All, only pays me to keep the stupid ones in check. |

Again I thought I made this post earlier - essentially Brian may have a good idea there but I am not sure how the areas could best be redefined but that Dave might poll the audience. |

SBenois: No hostility intended. In fact, I was just looking out for your interests. You must admit that with all of your burgeoning business interests, it is entirely within the realm of possibility that you might wish to develop your own Institute of Incubation which would find itself in direct competition with the present project Ed, Brian, Dave and the others are looking to launch. At the very least, your own enterprise should be granted equal time. |

Dave: Yesterday after the proud new owner walked off with the doctor's scale I had advertised in the FREE CLASSIFIEDS section of the board, it occurred to me that it would be helpful if there some way in which an advertizer could either delete their own classified post or mark the post "item sold" so others would know it was no longer available. Can this be done?

Dave and Jaime: Here is a suggestion which might make it easier for members of our community to use the on-line chat function: Since the main menu for the message board now lists the user name and time of the last person to sign on to a given thread, and since most of us enter the message board through the main menu and refer to it as we toggle back and forth between the varous thread topics, placing a separate category called Chat on the main menu where people could post a brief message before entering and immediately upon exiting the chat room would tell other posters who was there at the time. Of course, as I have said before, I order for this work, persons looking to hold conversations in the chat room would have to be prepared to wait for a few seconds to give others a chance to read their "entry" post and react to it. In college we had a fifteen minute rule when the professor was late for class. Perhaps we should have a five minute rule for waiting for others to enter the chat room here on MOL. |

I suggest that people not post the same message in multiple places (i.e., virtual cafe and please help). Does anybody really read the messages in one area and not in the other areas? Also, isn't it better to keep a single discussion in a single place? |
