Hi everyone! I've lived in South Orange for a few months now and absolutely love it.
I'm teaching a knitting class at the public library Sept 7th and invite you all to come out for it. Thanks to the library staff for hosting, publicizing, and naming us!

Hi Kari:

You may get a bigger audience for your post in the Art and Entertainment section, especially if you are looking to attract SO as well as M residents.

You may also want to go to the MOL home page and add your event to the Community Calendar (E-mailed to residents of both towns).

Hi Kari,

Welcome to South Orange, and MOL. Question, is teaching a knitting class anything like sewing? I need a button on my shirt.

Listen, at H2TA we're looking for people interested in giving classes like this at our Internet Cafe on weekdays. We’re located on Baker Street in Maplewood Village. If you're interested please give us a call at 973-762-ARTS

Hi, I guess my interest in this board is a little different from others. I grew up in Maplewood, went to college at Kean, and have now been living in Stockholm, Sweden for a year and a half. My parents still live in Maplewood though. I found this MB a few days ago and it made me smile. Helps a bit with a little bit of homesickness I suppose.

I just started a job as a web design/intro to computers teacher at a high school here. I'm hoping it will get better. I'm having a bit of trouble dealing with the teenagers right now. Up until now I've just been studying Swedish, trying to learn the language. I actually had my national test on the language this morning, and I think I did well.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself, and say hello.

Hi, Irma!

No need to feel homesick when you can be home with the click of mouse on a book mark. We have several transplanted native Maplewoodians who post here regularly. One is now living in Ohio, another in New Hampshire.

I think everyone has trouble dealing with teenagers from time to time, including other teenagers. I'm sure things will get better as you become more accustomed to the role of teaching and the new culture in which you find yourself.

Congratulations on doing so well on your Swedish test.

What made you decide to go to Sweden?

Hi Joan! Thanks for the welcome!

Well, love brought me here LOL I've been with a Swedish man for 6 years. He lived with me in NJ for a while before we decided to pack it up and try it all out here. So far so good, but sometimes I miss home like crazy. I came home to visit in March and it was wonderful. But I do love it here.

My boyfriend also tries to comfort me and tell me I will eventually get accustomed to the teaching and the nightmare students. I'm sure he's right. I am really grateful to have the job. It's all about adjustment I suppose.

But I am happy to find this board. It's comforting.

Welcome Irma.Click your mouse three time (really only once) and there is no place like home, at least for a web visit.
Comforting to hear that teens are the same all over the world, difficult to deal with. Mine are almost human at this point (21 and 19) but i truly admire those who chose to work with the creatures that the "aliens" leave when they take away our beloved children, because while eventually parents get back thir humans, every year you and your fellow educators have to deal with a new group of "aliens".

Kärkommen, Välkommen, Välkomna!

Thank you LibraryLady and AJC!

Like I said, I've been feeling quitea pang of homesickness lately. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I just started this new job and I know I won't be able to visit again until JUNE. JUNE!!! It's hard to bear that I won't see my family for that long. But ah well. So is the life of an ex-pat.

As for the teenagers.. I had 2 classes to teach today, first since the terrible Monday incident, and luckily I can see that only a few are a problem, and not all, and I will survive LOL

Again, thanks for the warm welcomes. I appreciate it :-D

Hej Irma,
I'm a German ex-pat living in Maplewood. I came to the US in 1996 as an exchange student. Got my masters at NJIT in beautifull Newark.

I try to visit Germany at least once a year, but might not be able to do it this year. It's always great to come back 'home'. But I have also made Maplewood my home, and it is a great home.

I know the homesick part is tough at times, but you picked a great place to live, too. Ahh, Sweden the land of Absolut, blonde hair, blue eyes, lakes and fjords. Not to forget marinated herring.

The longer you will live abroad, the better you will like it. Coming 'home' will still be a great time, but believe me, after a long vacation in the US, you will actually be longing to go back home to Sweden.
For me the threshold was around 4-5 years, after that I thought of the US as my first home.

Embrace both cultures, it's worth it. And I don't think you're there yet, but once you have kids, bring them up bi-lingual (kind of easy in Sweden anyway) and bi-cultural. Makes for great kids and later on adults.

Hi Folks,

My name is Dan. I'm planning on moving to either Maplewood or South Orange next month with my wife Rachel and 19-month old son Nate. We're moving from Philadelphia, where we've been for the last year, but prior to that we had been in Park Slope for 5 years. We are looking to rent a 3-bedroom apartment or home in either Maplewood or South Orange. If you know of any available residences please drop us a note.

Looking forward to living amongst you.

-Dan

Thanks Earlster. I've actually been home once since the move, back in March. I stayed there for 3 weeks, and by the end I was itching to get back! LOL But ther eis that part of me that wishes I could see my family as often as I want. Well Ic allthem whenever I want, so that helps quite a bit.

And welcome Dan! Unfortunately I'm not actually in Maplewood so I can't help you with properties. But I can wish you good luck! Or as we say here (in Sweden), lycka till!

Hi,

I moved to Maplewood 2 years ago. I finally got a password for the site. So I guess you can call me "long time, first time" in that I've often viewed the site.

I'm a lawyer in the city (who isn't) and will probably do most of my posting in the political section since that's my thing.

Welcome to MOL April... what do you mean you're a lawyer in the city who isn't... isn't in the city, or isn't what?

Seeing I try to stay away from any heavy political stuff, chances are I probably won't get to read much of your stuff. So while I have this chance, please allow me to ask which foot you kick with, left, or right?

One more thing, do you do any pro bono work?

Thank You,

I tend to lean to the left but over the last few years I seem to be heading in the other direction. I am a registered Democrat but I do find Kerry to liberal for my tastes. Of course Bush is the other extreme.

Lawyers are a dime a dozen today or that's how I feel about my profession. I'm an entertainment lawyer so no pro-bono work. Afterall, it's an industry that certainly has money.

Thank you again for the warm welcome.

Sorry Straw, but I think it was pretty awful of you to go so far in creating your alternative identity to skirt Dave's ban as to introduce yourself here in the new member section, complete with fake bio. What a corruption of the true spirit of this thread, which is to make genuine newcomers feel comfortable in their new (virtual and actual) community.

Shameful.

My partner, son and I just moved to Maplewood (yes, from Park Slope, Brooklyn!). We attended the Newcomers Club meeting and met some great people. However, we're also interested in connecting with some other gay parents. Can anyone tell me how to get in touch with Rainbow Families? Thanks.

Hello everybody. I have lived here in Maplewood for over 13 years. Although I've been viewing MOL for quite a while, I've finally decided to make an account.
