duragliata-
sorry for the delayed response from one of us in the Rainbow Families group. Yes, there are lots of gay/ lesbian / bisexual/ transgendered parent families in Maplewood & South Orange.

I'm re-posting the succinct description about the listserv from bartell last year. It's a great way to find families with kids in the same school or child care as yours, as well as meeting and making friends in the wider community. Most of us have other affiliations related to multiracial families/ adoption, politics, religious/spiritual organizations, etc.
Welcome!

"For anyone who is interested, there is an email list for LGBT parents and their straight allies who live in Maplewood or S. Orange. Folks that are considering moving here are more than welcome, too. It is a good place to get the kind of information maplewoodbound is looking for.

For more information, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/maplewood

After you sign up, you will be asked to send a brief email introducing yourself."

Hey Everyone,

My wife and I just moved to town at the end of the summer from Boston. So far we love it, and we also love reading the message boards for the inside scoop on the issues that really matter! Look forward to meeting all you!

Welcome, Kevin and Amory! Glad you introduced yourselves!

Hey, Kevin, I have some new neighbors on my block with Massachusetts license plates on the cars. Are you on Plymouth Ave? If you want to answer privately, email me at noglider@pobox.com

Thanks Tom.

Quick question for this forum: I've seen people referring to different neighborhoods in Maplewood (Golf Island, Midland Park, etc.). Is there a map on the website showing boundaries for these areas somewhere?
Thanks,
AB

Amory:

Welcome to Maplewood.

To try and provide a brief answer to your question, Maplewood is a pretty small town (3.5 square miles) so it really isn't necessary to show neighborhood association and church catchment areas and school districts on maps of the town. Most of us prefer to consider ourselves citizens of Maplewood rather than identify with a particular section of town. Local place names such as Golf Island and Midland Park are mostly used to give a more specific indication of where a specific event is/has taken place. I am sure that realtors also use the terms to help prospective home owners determine more precisely where specific houses are located.

In case you are curious, Golf Island is the area by Maplewood Middle School and the country club (golf course) and Midland Park is over by Midland Boulevard.

Please feel free to post any other such place names that you come across but can't decipher.

Also, check the attic for prior discussions on local place names which have been held on the board from time to time.

I believe a lot of the neighborhood names are from the names of the elementary schools that serve the areas. So you have Clinton, Jefferson and Tuscan. I believe Hilton is the name for the area that Seth Boyden serves.

Tom:

Clinton, Jefferson, and Tuscan are the names of local schools but since Jefferson and Marshal schools are partnered, early elementary school students living near Jefferson School would still find themselves going to school in South Orange.

Seth Boyden school is located in the Hilton neighborhood (named for the pre-colonial place name given that area) but the school district name is usually referred to as Boyden.

Thank you for the details, Joan. Someone ought to make a map?

And to pick a nit, what does pre-colonial mean? Before the continent was colonized? I doubt the Indians named the area Hilton.

My mistake. I meant to type in "pre-revolution". In the beginning (during the colonial period) there were two towns in this area. One called Hilton was located just about where the present day Hilton neighborhood is today. The other called Jefferson was up around Ridgewood Road. In the middle were farms and forest.

Hello everyone,

I'm a new poster, but I've lurked on this board for almost a year. I've been very hesitant to register and post because of the large amounts of negativity directed towards SHU on this board. I am a second year graduate student, so I'm able to see many of the issues on here from both community and university perspectives.

I enjoy living here in SO and want to find ways to be more involved in the community. However, I'm cautious because of the negativity towards anyone associated with SHU that I've personally experienced.
