Thanks, Joan. I've about given up and may have to (GASP!) do the work myself. |

Hello Everyone, I am new here, everyone with children in Maplewood and S. Orange School Districts probably knows me or at least see's me running around fixing the mechanical systems. What great towns these are to work for. Again I would like to say hello and I am glad to be here.

The name I use comes from the problem of privatization threats we are getting from the Board of Education. It seems like some Board members and highly paid administrators (17% raise) feel they can better the district by hiring less skilled and lower paid employees through AraMark services. We know different. We have been doing this for the last 100 years. |

I thought they attempted to outsource the custodial staff and found the level of workmanship to be substandard. Also, I thought I read that someone was caught stealing school property (ie computers) while in the employ of an outside contracting service? It doesn't appear to me that you are a custodian, so are they looking beyond the custodial functions at this time? |

Pizzaz: I seem to remember a similar result the last time the school district contracted out custodial work in the district. I Want To Keep My Job: Can you be more specific about the nature of the services contemplated for contracting out at this point in time? Who would be affected? Projected time table, etc.? This might be a more appropriate discussion for the Education Section of the Board, which is frequented by school district employees, board of education members, PTA and Home and School leaders, and other interested parties from both towns which comprise the school district. |

There are only 7 of us in Maintenance. HVAC, Carpenter, Plumbing, Welding, Locksmith, Grounds and Electrical. We run around like nuts most of the time trying to keep up with damage control. We use outside contractors for a lot of the repairs we can do ourselves if we only had more help and didn't have to use our own vehicles for work. (We need vans). I bought my own to use here. The talk in the district is ALL custodians will be moved to CHS and the elementary schools will be privatized. I am told that one Board Member even wants to privatize secretaries and bus aides too. With a general sweep of the district in a large privatization move the Maintenance staff would go also. We now have two supervisors that came from Sodexho and Marriott working for us. One is the Transportation Director and the other is in charge of custodians. Both work closely with Aramark. The only thing that gives us any hope is that our new Director of Buildings and Grounds is an incredible supervisor with excellent mechanical knowledge and wants to utilize us to do more work ourselves and depend less on outside contractors. I have seen this happen in Orange in 1996 when Marriott took over. I have friends that still work in Orange that say the place is a nightmare and never came close to the quality of work that we did when working there. |

Welcome Cicely. If you have questions about Maplewood, please post them in the "Please Help" section of the board and those of us who already live in our two towns will try to help answer them. |

Cicely, it's not at all too early. I started reading MOL in January of 2003, when I started looking for homes. Then my company suddenly laid me off, so I couldn't look for a while. I got another job and resumed looking in March. After I put a deposit down, I introduced myself here in April, and I moved in in June of 2003. So I definitely understand your excitement. These are two great towns, and this is the first house I ever lived in, so the novelty hasn't worn off yet. |
