Hi all, My boyfriend Brian (and cat Ziggy) and I bought our first home and moved to Maplewood from Hoboken in October. We are pretty settled in by now and finally schooled in the fine art of Maplewood recycling. We've been following the message boards since we found the house in August and I am just finally getting around to introducing myself. We both love it here, the town, the people, St. James Gate ;) - and Tom I agree, I don't think the novelty will wear off any time soon. I also want to say how grateful I am to have this online community for tips on everything Maplewood, recycling, where to eat, where to gym, a vet etc...you have all been extremely helpful in making Maplewood our new home...thanks, Marisa |

Welcome Marisa, we're new here too, since May, and we also love all the things you mentioned, (No pet, no Vet.) We (well, I) just wish there were more places to drink. I quite enjoy the St James Gate but, I need my booze in a different glass every once in a while. Suggestions, anyone? |

Thank you Joan and Soulful. I agree some variety would be nice Soulful. Haven't yet ventured to some other hoods, but it looks like SO has a couple bar/restaurants in their village? Also in Millburn, Martini's looks like a good spot for both drinks and dinner. I always plan to try it out but haven't made it yet. |

We were at the Martini Bar recently and we liked it quite a bit. I had a delicious seafood risotto and a very nice cocktail or two. I wish it was closer though. Any other suggestions? |

Soulful...I happen to like that newish place on Valley next to the liquor store. It's right near Toro Loco. It begins with P - can't think of the name off hand. Good martini's |

Mamma, Tell me more. Is it a restaurant? Just a bar/pub? Classy and well-lit? Dark and sensual? Live band? Overwrought,Bruce-heavy jukebox? Fifty beers on tap? 10-page wine list? I'll look for it next time I'm over that way. |

If anyone knows a place nearby with a Bruce-heavy jukebox or 50 beers on tap (preferrably both) I'd love to know about it.

Really, Amory? That's exactly the kind of place I'd avoid! I don't drink beer and I don't like Bruuuuuuuuuuce! (Thank G-d this is anonymous, huh? I might get lynched.) Well, diversity is king. And, Amory, there are enough bars in this world for the both of us. And a few to accommodate us both. Cheers to you. BTW, Mamma, I was just out at the supermarket and drove by the place you mentioned...Papillon 25? Is that it? It looked like a classy little place. Fairly empty at 5:30 on a Tuesday but I may stop in there some evening this week. So, if you see someone sampling draft beers and playing Bruce on the jukebox, IT AIN'T ME, BABE!

Here's a [somewhat overwritten] review of Papillon 25 that I found. Sounds like a nice place to drink although not necessarily to eat. I like the fact that it's so racially mixed. I'll definitely czech it out. Who's gonna join me? http://www.artfuldiner.com/papillon25.html And here's their website: http://www.papillon25.com/information.htm

Hi, new to this board. My name is Carrie. I was chatting with folks from millburnweb.com, but it appears to be under construction as the note reads "suspended" ( maybe they are being punished?) Just a joke. Anyway, don't mean to jump in the middle of anything, just saying hello. This sight seems much more expansive than the other, I should go through it and find a "room" that I can contribute to,. have a nice day! |

Hi Carrie, Welcome. How long has millburnweb been down? Marc posts here at times, so maybe he can jump in and let us know what's up and if he needs help. |

Hi, My husband and I want to move to Maplewood/S.O.! We just moved to New Jersey from Boston and are renting in Westfield. It's very pretty, but we're looking for something a little more diverse, with a pub or two! We visited M./S.O. last weekend and LOVED it. We're starting to look for our first house. Can anyone recommend neighborhoods/areas that would be good for an early-thirties couple with no kids? We like being able to walk to restaurants, etc., but I think the area close to the village is a little out of our price range. I'd appreciate any suggestions! |

Welcome, Jen. I hope you find a way to make it here. (If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.) I think the area around Midland Blvd is cheaper than most of the town, and I think on the south side of Springfield Ave is probably even less expensive, and the taxes should be lower, too. But neither is a short walk into the village. Still, it's nice. I went to an estate sale a few months ago on the south side of Springfield Ave, in a modest looking house. On the inside, it was very impressive. Many of the houses here were built in 1925 and 1926, which seems to be a very tasteful period. |

Welcome Jen: Just about any place in town should be good for an-early thirty something couple with no kids. There are restaurants and such on Springfield Avenue and in nearby towns as well as in the Village so if being able to walk to eateries is your prime concern, you shouldn't limit yourself to the areas in easy walking distance of the Village. I would suggest doing the following: 1. Meet with a realtor and discuss price range, house size, make or break factors (such as being within walking distance of one or more of the town's commercial districts), etc. 2. Check out some of the local activities going on around town. There is quite a good variety of things going on this weekend for example and many are posted on the Community Calendar on this website. See if they are the kinds of activities you would like to participate in. 3. Walk, don't drive, through some of the neighborhoods which interest you. Get a feel for the ambiance of the town. See which sections you like best. Identify the reasons why you like them. 4. Speak to the folks at CCR who can give you further information about Maplewood and even arrange a tour of some of the town's neighborhoods. 5. If you still like Maplewood, put it all together and select the house that's right for you. Good luck. |

Hey there. The place on Valley with the Great Martinis is Pappion. I don't have the spelling right though! |
