grownup - You've discovered the single most complex facet of living in NJ: what to do with which trash. It just about made me nuts when we first moved here, but you get used to it.

You're in Maplewood, right? I'd start with either a call to town hall or a talk with the neighbors. Town hall should be able to give you the name of the trash company to contact plus info about recycling.

Your neighbor can tell you which days your area has trash pickup (for which you have to contract with a hauling company, not sure of the name) and recycling pickup (free, but you need to know what to put out when). Recycling can also be dropped off at the town site on Boyden (?) St.

For large amounts of trash you want to get rid of right away, call Fred Hodges or one of the others recommended on this board. Use Search to find phone number(s).

Maplewood also has 2 (or 1) day(s) a year when you can put almost anything out at the curb for pickup. These are practically town holidays, where your junk is reviewed and sometimes removed by neighbors and strangers before the trucks come around. Town hall (or neighbors) should be able to tell you what day your area's pickup will be.

Then there's grass, leaves and other yard stuff, that I'm really clueless about, but between town hall, the trash co., and your neighbors, you'll find out.

What did I miss? Hopefully someone else will post phone numbers for town hall and the trash co. We moved to SO a few years ago, so I'm not perfectly current w/Mpl.

welcome, grownup, and enjoy!

MC

Call Waste Management to sign up for regularly scheduled pick-up (twice a week). You need to request this since it is not a town service. They will quote you the going rate and tell you which days have been assigned to your district. Twice weekly garbage pick-up is from the rear of the house.

Waste Management can also arrange for a bulk pick-up. Tell them what you have and they will quote you a price and give you a pick-up date. If you really have a lot of garbage you may want to look into renting a dumpster.

While you have Waste Management on the phone you can also ask about garden pick-up (once a week) for an additional fee. This is helpful if you don't use a lawn service and don't want to compost all those grass clippings, etc.

Recycling is twice a month and is placed at the curb in front of your house. Check the official town website for information on sorting rules and pick-up dates for each district or inquire at Town Hall. You can also bring recycling to the Town Recycling Center. Call Public Works for information on hours of operation and description of just what they take.

Bulk pick-up has been once or twice a year but may be eliminated altogether. Town is currently studying whether it would be cheaper for residents to make their own arrangements as needed.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to town.

Hi. My husband and I have recently moved to Maplewood with our two kids (3 and 1) from a 12 mth stint in Jersey City. I have tried to e-mail the Newcomers Club but the e-mail address had errors. Could someone please direct me to somewhere or someone who could help me get in contact with families with children of a similar age. It would be much appreciated.

Grownup,

You need to establish garbage pick-up by calling waste management (as reported before). Once this is done the easiest and cheapest way to get rid of bulky trash is to meet the collectors (sanitation engineers?) as they come around. I have found that if you through them a couple of bucks they will take just about anything.

I ripped up the carpeting in my house and after the waste mgt office gave me a quote of $50 to pick it up I met the gentlemen as they came around for the normal pick-up and handed the guy a $20 and a couple of Snapples. They gladly took my stuff.

I have regularly done this since without any problem. BIG NOTE THOUGH: If you see a white pick-up truck lingering around DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS. It is one of the bosses who frown on the garbage collectors making money on the side. Just wait until the next time and ask them then.

PS> My neightbor from NYC gives them juice boxes and cookies?!?!?!

Welcome Kim and Richard. I hope to see you at the Maplewood Memorial Day Parade next week. Check out the Memorial Day Parade thread in the Mostly Maplewood section of the board for full details.

Kim:

Go into the please help section. Post your requests for information on Newcomers (not sure if they are meeting again until the fall) and request for play dates for your kids and you should get replies.

Kim,

We moved here a year ago, after a brief 16-year stint in Jersey City. I'll bet when you tell people in Maplewood that you moved here from Jersey City, they say "That's different!" Right? We've heard it over and over. We love it here and you will, too.

Where in JC were you?

Kim, you might want to check in to a local group called Mothers and More, they do all kinds of stuff for moms and kids of all ages. Joined when I first moved here (also from Jersey City, 11 years there) and I was a new mom, and they were a lifesaver. Met lots of really nice people some of whom are still good friends, and others who I still see around town and say Hi to.

Mr. T, we were on Hamilton Park, 8th Street, how about you?

Small world, huh? We were downtown, too, near Hamilton Park, on Pavonia between Monmouth and Coles, across from the Wells Fargo Bldg until 1998. Then, we bought a house up on Gifford Avenue, next to Lincoln Park. We were there for 6 years, until exactly a year ago, when we moved here.

Mr. T,

You get "that's different" in response to moving from Jersey City? Everyone tells me that moving from either NYC, Hoboken, or Jersey City to Maplewood is the usual path.

Now, if you really want to see looks of surprise, tell them you moved here after living 10 years in Berkeley Heights, like my husband and I did! We get some really interesting reactions!

Back to the east coast after a twenty year hiatus. Two sons, two cities (Chicago. Minneapolis) later, we're back to South Orange. It's a midlife thing--we've come home. Loving being back in the east with family and friends. As you can see by my name, love movies. Looking for a knitting/crochet group for fellowship and fun. Can be church-based.

Hello,
I'll be closing on a house in Maplewood mid July and hope to move in shortly after. Currently in the East Village, NYC. Looking forward to the peace and quiet and more space!
I could use some help finding reputable contractors - I need some estimates for rebuilding a garage and adding structural support to an existing attic - is this something you can help me with?
Would love to hear from you.
thanx.
