I like a nice pork sausage. With cheese. Wendy said it was ok. In fact, she wrote OU on the package for me. |

Hot dogs are a delicious choice for lunch or dinner. The real question here is ketchup or mustard? Or both?!?! |

Great topic. Liberals make some of the best hot dogs I've ever tasted. The blue states rule when it comes to relish as well. And of course, who can forget Kerry's pipeline to the greatest ketchup company on the face of the earth. Hot Dogs and Libs are a great combination I enjoy! |

Chicago-style, but off the grill for some real color and preferably an open flame. Cucumber, onions, tomato and some hot peppers, and mustard. No catsup (remember that spelling? Shows if you mispronounce a word long enough, it becomes the accepted practise). "Ketchup" is for weenies on a variety of levels. |

In the time that I was working with a client in Louisville, I'd fly in and out of Cincinnati Airport and sometimes through Cleveland. The hot dog stands always served "Coney Islands," hot dogs under a mound of chili (which was stupendous) and spaghetti! I never quite figured out the combination, but after one of those I didn't have to eat anything else for a day and a half. By the way, grillad korv, grilled hot dogs served from hot dog stands anywhere in Sweden, are the best in Europe. People often have them with mashed potatoes in those little cardboard hot dog holders. A little too starchy for me. I'm a hot dog roll with sauerkraut and heavy on the mustard chap myself. |

Surprised that nobody has mentioned the onion and catsup sauce the dirty water dog venders in NYC use. Delicious. When the spouse ain't around I like to slit franks and stuff them with sharp cheddar cheese, then cook them under the broiler. Mrs. K doesn't like the mess or the smell. Buns should always be toasted. If you are a Hoboken commuter try the hot dogs at The Railhead. If you miss the train a couple of those and a draft beer will do wonders to improve your disposition. Most hot dog buns really suck. With hamburgers you can always use kaiser rolls, but I don't know any where to get good rolls. Pepperridge Farms just doesn't cut it. Happy burping to all.

In point of fact, hotdogs should be banned or should carry FDA warnings. They contain unhealthy levels of fat and many of the ingredients are of dubious pedigree. Moreover, as there is at least some meat in hotdogs, we need to consider the fact that consuming hotdogs is an endorsement of the barbaric and environmently unfriendly practices of the livestock industry. I am disappointed that this thread is mostly taken up by inane posts on hotdogs brands and toppings when the real issue is whether is is politically correct to even consume them. |

They also contain cancer-causing nitrates. Applegate Farms make a nitrate and antibiotic-free hot dog (in beef and turkey I believe). It's more than passable when smothered in condiments. Available in Whole Foods for the discerning consumer. |

The real question we should be asking is: What the hell has George Bush done about the nitrates in Hot Dogs? He's been in office now for over five years and as far as I can tell, there's been no progress. In fact, if you include the 4 years that his dad was the President and the 8 years before that that he was the Veep, we're talking about a family that has been at the center of power for 17 years - longer than FDR - and they've done nothing to make hot dogs a better meal for the American public. Think about it. When FDR was the President, weren't hot dogs tastier, healthier and a better value? Of course I wasn't around back then so perhaps Wendy or Librarylady can let us know. I say it's high time that we throw the bum in the White House out. If the Bush family had been doing their jobs over the last quarter century, then maybe there wouldn't need to be a Hebrew National pledging quality to "a higher authority". In addition to running the banks and the media, the Jews now run the hot dog business. It's always the Jews. Where will it end? Impeach Bush.

No, but with his activism, he'll probably do that right after he reverses Roe vs. Wade. By the way, I think a lot of Maplewoodians who post here are feeling overwhelmed and intimidated (emasculated?) by the clear Democratic hold on this state, and are taking it out on this board. Sorry, guys. If you don't like it here, there's always Texas.

Look, we've been through this a million times... hot dogs cause an unnecessary increase in the emission of greenhouse gas. The right wing can drone on and on about "big government" but this is a real problem that requires a real response. If society doesn't take it upon itself to do the right thing, then government is behooved to step in. It's ridiculous that emissions standards for hot dogs are as lax as they are in this day and age. The wiener lobby has a stranglehold on this country! |

But in the past we've always believed that the excess emission of gas came from Ted Kennedy. Now it appears that a good percentage of it is coming from the Republican Party which has been full of hot air for at least the last two years.

some hot dog musings... ketchup on hot dogs is for the single-digit age set. Once you hit the big 1-0, you ought to be over ketchup on dogs. Syd's and Church's are most respectable local hot dog slingers. Texas Weiners is an obvious Republican front right here near us...no wonder Bush hasnt done anything about nitrates...more cronyism. Concessions cost more at Shea than Yankee Stadium, but the biggest different between the hot dogs at Shea and Yankee Stadium...you cant buy a hot dog at Shea in October. Can hot dogs be incorporated into a matzoh charlotte recipe? I prefer Sabrett's over Hebrew National, but S, whats the final word...skin or skinless? |

Re: Matzoh Charlotte. Let's just say that hot dogs would not, in any way, detract from the recipe. Indeed, hungry canines everywhere might appreciate having something to seek out in the trash. |

I'll admit that this isn't as good as the real thing, but it's a tasty alternative if your priority is health and nutrition: -- Lightline brand Organic Tofu Pups -- (lots of) Lightly warmed Eden Organic Sauerkraut -- Sliced raw organic red onion (or yellow onion sauteed in olive oil) -- Organic German Mustard -- Organic Catsup -- Three tablespoons of mix of raw apple cider vinegar, olive oil and flax oil, with crushed raw garlic -- Sprinkle with cayenne powder. -- Ezekial brand (flourless) organic sprouted grain hotdog bun (hamburger bun is even better). All ingredients can be purchased at Whole Foods, except for the buns which have to be special-ordered. Use the Ezekiel English Muffins if you don't want to wait.
