Ae35unit should probably provide a little context, and/or background info, for folks who might not understand the significance of that Senator George Allen video. For example, there was some news coverage about the guy who was holding the camera, and who was being told "Welcome to America" by Senator Allen, and being addressed as "Macaca" - Quote:In an interview, Sidarth said he suspects Allen singled him out because he was the only non-white face in the audience, which he estimated included about 100 Republican supporters. "I think he was doing it because he could and I was the person of color there and it was useful for him in inciting his audience," said Sidarth. "I was annoyed he would use my race in a political context." Allen campaign manager Dick Wadhams said the Webb campaign's complaints about the comments are unfounded and he said Allen had "nothing to apologize for" to the young man. Wadhams said Allen campaign staffers had begun calling Sidarth "mohawk" because of a haircut Wadhams said the Webb staffer has. "Macaca was just a variation of that," Wadhams said.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/14/AR2006081400589.html This is what he looks like (no Mohawk haircut, by the way) -
The term "Macaca" is apparently an obscure racial slur, which Senator Allen was aware of due to his family background. Okay, carry on ...

Isn't the proper pronunciation of macaque something like (and I'm sure I'm butchering the phonetic spelling) maCACK----or at least that's how my college anthropology teacher pronounced it. It is therefore less than obvious to me that Senator Allen was referring to this apparent racist code speak when he referred to maKOCKa. Anyway, clearly I am not attuned to the racism amongst us.

Apparently neither mwoodwalk or Ily looked at the Jeffrey Feldman site where it stated this in conclusion
Quote:CONCLUSION The term 'macaque'--also pronounced 'mukakkah'--is a commonly used racial slur on par with the word 'ni&&er' in the united states. In Europe, the word 'macaque' is largely a racial slur used to insult people of North African descent. It is roughly synonomous with 'dirty arab.' Most of the results that came back in these searches took me to well known white supremacy websites--and to posts from the past two or three years. So this is a phrase that is still in use. Also returned where hundreds of 'ethnic slur' dictionaries online, all of which list this term as a 'Belgian' racial slur.
I suppose Allens fascination with the confederacy - wearing of a confederate lapel pin in High School, having a noose in his law offices, confederate flags etc is meaningless as well. I think we have much more here then just some minor put down. Allen knew exactly what he was talking about when he called that man macaca.

I have never been impressed with Allen. He always comes across as an oily snake oil salesman, in my opinion anyway. I doubt if he knew he was hurling a racist remark at Mr. Sidarth, who was probably choosed by Webb's handlers for the job of shadowing the Allen campaign because he was most likely to upset Allen and friends with his ethnic looks, not to mention the first known "mohawk mullet" haircut. Allen will probably win handily against the turncoat former GOPer Webb. However, I think the incident put the end to Allen's Presidential aspirations which makes me very happy.

BobK, Hold on before you make a Fojlike prediction. The fact that libs like Hoops are scared to death of this guy bodes well for his political future. I'm not saying he's going to seriously run in 2008, but their is plenty of time for future runs. Hillary is a perfect example of biding time. Regardless of who runs and wins in 2008 (Hillary, McCain, Gore, Rudy, etc, etc), I see Allen and Jeb as a future ticket. Probably 2016 if a Repub wins in '08, or 2012 if a Dem wins. Either way, this current minor episode will be long forgotten. I can already see Hoops screaming, but he wore a confederate lapel pin, you know what that means!! Ily, In case you haven't noticed, Presidential material is in the eye of the voter. Didn't my neo-con half man half monkey whip the proper and upstanding New Englander the other year? Who wasn't ready for prime time? |

Well if you're OK with slinging around racial slurs, I guess you're in the right part of the country. As for whether it will be long-forgotten, ask Trent Lott. He may be able to squeak out a win in Virginia, but the majority of the country has no tolerance for this kind of thing anymore. And leaving aside the racial slur, "welcome to America" was quite a statement to be making to someone who was born and raised in this country. Allen's non-recognition that a non-white person might be an American will not go over well with Native-, Indian-, Korean-, Chinese-, Japanese-, Arab-, African-, Cuban- and any other not-as-white-as-Allen-hyphen-Americans. |

I've spent lots of time below the Mason Dixon Line and realize that having a confederate flag in the back window of your pickup truck could mean that you have an obsession with the civil war and that's about it. This guy Allen is a racist. Besides that, I for one have had enough of Presidents who don't know how to act in public. Seriously, would you want Allen giving a shoulder massage to some world leader?

it's another divisive tactic of the GOP to state unequivocally that places like NJ or NYC or DC are not the "real America." Real America is, in their view, invariably, rural, Christian, conservative, and overwhelmingly white. If George Allen wants to see the "real America," let him go someplace where the faces are an array of colors in addition to white. |

Allen: "In no way was it meant to demean him, and I'm sorry if he was offended." How's that for a half-assed apology... But guess what? He's an effin liar, too? (Now there's a shocker). http://www.tnr.com/blog/theplank?pid=31575 "Not only is macaque apparently a French slur used to describe North Africans, Allen would have good reason to know it is. His mother is French Tunisian (yeah, that's in North Africa), and Allen speaks French." Another Republican whose true colors get shown as brightly as that bird above.

After I finally learned what was offensive, I'm very disappointed. The insinuation that it's only in the South and not cities like NYC, Boston, Detroit, Chicago and the City of Brotherly Love that you get these types of utterances and attitudes that are widespread is hilarious. |

What else is hilarious is that there are conservatives on this board still flogging -- even as of this week on this very thread -- Jesse Jackson's notorious "hymietown" remark, which happened 22 years ago, but readily excuse this. Don't think we're excusing Jackson's ancient remark; we're just ignoring you. But you guys are actively defending Allen with "holy stupidity," then chuckling over yet another tired hymietown reference as though it were a clever comeback, a "minor incident" and the all-time favorite, "it happens everywhere." But you want to talk about "hymietown", "macaca" and their consequences? How's this: Jackson's political career was over. So if you want to put it up into that category, be my guest. |

It was not long ago that Howard Dean was chastised for making the comment that the Democratic party should direct its attention to young, white southern males who drive pick up trucks with confederate flags. He was immediately attacked for making an offensive and stereotypical comment about white southern males. Turns out that George Allen actually drove around in a pick up truck with a confederate flag in his younger years. If Dean should be chastised for making such an offensive and stereotypical comment, then Allen should be chastised for living up (or down) to the stereotype. "Welcome to America." What a jackass. |

bettyd -- Dean wasn't chastised for saying that Republicans are white and Christian. He said "They all behave the same. They all look the same." Also said they "don't make an honest living." You can hear the same statements right here in Maplewood uttered by Democrats, and they're not addressed to white people of the GOP. |

In context: Quote: Speaking to the Campaign for America's Future, Mr. Dean called for easier rules for voting, saying it is difficult for working parents to make it to the polls on time and wait to vote. "Well, Republicans, I guess, can do that, because a lot of them have never made an honest living in their lives," Mr. Dean said. "But for ordinary working people, who have to work eight hours a day, they have kids, they got to get home to those kids, the idea of making them stand for eight hours to cast their ballot for democracy is wrong."
Which he later amended to "Republican leaders have never made...", which I think is probably quite fair.
Quote:said in San Francisco this week that Republicans are "You know, the Republicans are not very friendly to different kinds of people. They're a pretty monolithic party. They all behave the same. They all look the same. It's pretty much a white Christian party."
I understand that this got a lot of white, christian Republicans all riled up. Why don't you find out what the Black Republican House Caucus thinks, or ask a few Black Republican Senators. |

I love this. You libs get so worked up over things you can't control or stop. If you guys are so bigoted towards white southern Christian males then you either don't care that they run everything or your actions don't live up to your words. Carter, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43. As well as the committee chairmanships. You guys continue to make laughing stocks out of yourselves. While you try and belittle me you are only pointing out your own weakness. You had, less than 2 years ago, an opportunity to act not whine and you got blasted by a white southern christian male. When will you guys wake up! You should be begging Edwards to run! Instead Hillary or Gore? Are you serious? You could run a damn blue painted statue and get the same number of electoral votes as these two could. Continue to play the same stupid game and you will continue to lose in the same stupid way. And I will continue to laugh with my same stupid laugh. |
