Well today I agreed that if Bush wins I will take my daughter Michaela to the Bush Inauguration and that if Kerry wins Michaela will take me to the Kerry Inauguration. Assuming that we can get tickts. I guess Mariah will tag along in either case.

Maureen Dowd, 9/19 NYT-

quote:

Mrs. Niederer tried to shout while the first lady was delivering her standard ode to her husband's efforts to fight terrorism. She wanted to know why the Bush twins weren't serving in Iraq "if it's such a justified war," as she put it afterward. The Record of Hackensack, N.J., reported that the mother of the dead soldier was boxed in by Bush supporters yelling "Four more years!" and wielding "Bush/Cheney" signs. Though she eventually left voluntarily, she was charged with trespassing while talking to reporters.

Well, I finally got on the radio at around 2:43 PM. It was worth the wait. (Fortunately, I was able to read MOL, do email, and work on my Six Sigma Stuff on the computer while I waited.)

Monica was glad that I called and raised my concern about the fact that half of the Star Ledger article on Friday was about the protester. Most, if not all, of the story, should have been about Laura Bush the invited guest, not Sue the interloping protester, Monica and I agreed. One more example of media bias against Republicans.

By the way, if you disagree with our viewpoint, I hope that YOU show some initiative and call in to Monica's 800 # to provide counterpoint.

Half about the protester, half about the government propagandist, with the story centered on the country's most divisive issue.

How is this unbalanced?

Why should have the story centered around Laura Bush. She was not breaking any new ground and was preaching the same stuff to the choir. Was there really anything newsworthy about her appearance?

And why are you so baffled and miffed about what this protester accomplished. The nature of what she did was to get the people to talk about the issues through her actions, which is exactly what happened. Wake up for pete sakes!

Ed.. With each post I regret my vote in last years election more and more. You seem to be slipping into the frenzy of politics that you do not understand. Interloper?? You didn't really just use that word. This was a campaign stop, no? Or a fundraiser? Tickets for a campaign stop. You know why?? TO PREVENT DISSENT. To SQUASH opposing views. Can't you see that what "your" candidate is doing is to intimidate people and scare them into voting for him?
You wear these convention attendances' and call in radio remarks as some sort of badge of honor. In your convention thread I commended you on being active in something you believe in. But now I question whether you even actually believe in it or are so swept up in it that you cannot think for yourself anymore. Your posts become more and more Pavlovian.

Ed-It appears your desire to be some sort of media star is a lot stronger then your desire to answer anon's question.

If "Sue the Interloper" hadn't shown up Mrs. Bush's stop might have gotten two paragraphs in the Ledger. It just isn't big news. Her speech broke absolutely no new ground.

Kind of makes me question why wasn't the person who we know was behind 9/11 even mentioned at the convention? Osama Bin Laden. Remember him. It was before Bush's smoke screen went up. Mission Accomplished, etc... Think about that Ed, then rinse the soap out of your brain, dry it off, and answer that.

In late 2000, my brother Jim decided to "volunteer" to serve his country in the United States Air Force. He's a catholic priest who entered the Air Force in early 2001, and after his basic training, was commissioned as a captain and was based at Grand Forks Air Base in North Dakota.

He would email me about his new life ministering to the men and women at the base. His basic training stories were amusing. Here were 30-something clergy, doctors and lawyers training as captains being screamed at by 22 year old non coms. Welcome to the military, Jim. Ha ha.

Then 9/11.

Within weeks, Jim was transferred out to the Middle East. He lived in a tent in the middle of the desert. The Air Force was literally building a base almost from scratch. On October 10, 2001 - not quite 1 month after 9/11, he was awoken from his cot. A chaplin was needed. Master Sgt. Evander Earl Andrews was the first casualty of the post 9/11 war effort. He was beheaded by a lift gate on a huge dump truck. Gruesome beyond description. Jim performed last rites. Welcome to the military, Jim. gulp.

Evander Andrews volunteered, same as every soldier, seaman and airman (and woman). Their sacrifices must not be taken for granted. The callous, flip response of "he volunteered!" must be condemned, not defended. How despicable.

I don't remember anyone shouting "they volunteered!" when the firemen, police, and rescue workers lost their lives on 9/11. Could you just imagine?

Anyway, after assignments at Osan AB (Korea) and Ramstein AB (Germany), Jim is back "down country" as they say. He can't call or email until he's rotated out of wherever he is. I worry about him and all the great Americans who serve.

Please show some respect to those who serve and compassion to those who lost loved ones.

“Volunteer” is an interesting word, especially as it relates to military service.

Certainly all the Vietnam era National Guardsmen “volunteered”, most with the near certainty that they would avoid being sent to Vietnam. The US has a long history of not activating the Army National Guard. They weren’t activated in Korea, they weren’t activated in Vietnam and in Desert Storm many if not most ANG combat units were deemed not well enough trained to take part in the war. I believe that the current call up and deployment of Guard units is the first since WWII. But they did “volunteer”.

In the active duty forces I wonder how many volunteered out of patriotism and how many volunteered for the college benefits and other training opportunities.

Certainly a lot of the officers took ROTC scholarships in college. Back during the “Pax Americus” in the 1990s most never expected to be in a war, or on active duty beyond their contractual commitment for the scholarship money. A friends two sons took ROTC scholarships and ended up as MP officers. Both are in Iraq and neither expects to be released when their active duty commitment is completed. Both expect to be on active duty for at least ten years, most of it in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Good post dytunck. It is a real shame when people who seem decent throw compassion right out the window in a state of political fervor. Kind of makes you wonder who is the real person.
