Harold,

Didn't NetNomads just get new doors? Nothing with the windows that I saw.

I haven't noticed anything at Mr. Gus's, but I could have missed it.

Surely some MOL'er will be by there today and can post.

I just had the swing changed on my doors. People have never bothered me here, but the wind can be ferocious. It was yanking the doors right off steel hinges. They are still working on the doors (nothing is ever as simple as it sounds in theory) so if you see them working again today, please don't be alarmed.

Also, now the little ones in my shop can't push their way out into the street. That eases my mind a lot.

As to safety, I'm here all hours of the day and night and have never felt any concern.

Thanks Deanne, but harold seems like the person that is going to go on believing what he wants....even as you the owner clarifies the matter and I was there the day the swing was being changed...

I wonder if harold even knows where SA is?

Deannel, I think an issue of safety regards the way the doors are supposed to swing!! Laws now require them to swing outward for fire safety to effect quick egress in case of fire! Please check this out with the building dept. and your insurer

Well then stop lecturing us on your definitions of the "hood" and rash of crimes on SA that you seem to be the only one that knows about.

You still don't believe what happened to the NetNomads doors even after the owner of the establishment tells you the deal.

Do you want to take a guess on how that makes you look?

horse hockey indeed....

I am done with this. You wouldn't know a bad hood if it bit you on the hiny...

Although I applaud the efforts of the town to try and "spruce up" SA, the reality is that it all for naught. The days of Hy's Cheescake, Starks 5 & 10, Prospect Deli, Maplecrest Hardware, Blankens, Kahns, the Bakery near Hys'...need I go on. There's a reason why these great busnesses are gone.....to build 20+ hair salons on SA???? Funny, people sometimes called me a pessimist. The truth is that I'm a realist. Please see things for what they are. The majority of west-siders are clueless about the Hilton/Jacoby area. When the big fight over the KFC at Yale and SA was going on, people had no idea where this was. Certain individuals drive down Jacoby in the early morning and say that things do not look so bad there; they even considered riding there bike down there at night. My guess is they probably would be wearing their rose-colored glasses for obvious reasons. As I have stated before, if you live North of SA, especially around Maplewood Center, this is a wonderful town. Live South of SA, well....... godspeed.

njphilf-

You seem very knowledgable about Maplewood/SA and it is much appreciated.

BUT:

There are how many nail salons in Maplewood Center? Who was the economic Einstein behind this phenomena?

I cannot speak for the Jacoby area since I don't live there and not even sure where it is (My family and I have been here for 9 mos.-is it near Boyden?).

We live very close to Prospect St. and SA. I am just concerned that harold is talking about all these crimes occuring in our area of SA that no one else knows about. The fact that he cannot even take the owner of NetNomads word for why she had work performed on her store doors about sums it up. He also cannot provide proof for such crimes, but hey they exist!!!

"Crime" is relative. If you think it is rough in the the Hilton section then wow....have I got some old Brooklyn neighbors I would like you to meet.

And should I cry now because the West Siders don't know we exist? I get to take advantage of all that Maplewood has to offer at the fraction of their taxes.

Good point ,Njphilf, those great businesses are gone and replaced with "yuppie" stores that are always empty [wonder how long they are going to last].
We know the hair/nail shops will be around FOREVER.

By the way, you've recently vacated the 'hood, can we assume white flight?

[they're going to jump all over that last statement].

Interesting you bring up "white flight" harold;

If Maplewood is such a lovely town in decline, why aren't more whites fighting to regain its lovely state instead of leaving?

Yes, Jacoby is near Boyden.

I think there was more "white flight" about ten year ago. These days, I think we are seeing a reversal of that.

Harold, there is no white flight in the Hilton section. In fact I would say the opposite is true. A large number of young families are moving in who don't want to spend 600k on a house. We've lived in the neighborhood for six years and never had a problem with crime. Our neighbors are wonderful and friendly, like most of the other folks I've gotten to know in Maplewood. So how is this the "bad" side of town? We're innately inclined to crime because we can't afford to pay a huge mortgage?

harold-

the good side of town means you pay astronomical taxes too?

Listen, my parents pulled a white flight 30 years ago from an upstate NY city so I know all about about it and what drove us away. The Hilton section isn't even close to that. My wife and 2 year old son walk all over our neighborhood during all times of the day/night w/o any problems. Take her word for it. She is a social worker who at one time went in the worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I bet you she can tell you some stories.

Housing Prices in Hilton has surpassed the 300k mark. Many NYers like my family with newborns/1/2 years old looking for peacer and quiet, more space and better schools are moving in....the RE agent who sold us this house says the Hilton section is the beast value going right now....he is in fact is selling 2 other houses on the street....

My neighbors are friendly and the kids are all polite....

Harold-ONE MORE TIME.....can you please provide specific examples of the rash of crimes in Hilton?

bklyntonj-can you please elaborate...?
