A new "switchback" with paving stones has been constructed from Locust Grove to the lookout. Does anyone know its purpose? If it is to accommodate bike riders, it is a disaster waiting to happen when the first biker going downhill encounters the first hiker. |

I doubt it's to accommodate bike riders. Isn't it illegal to mountain bike in the reservation? Maybe it's to accommodate the cops chasing the bikers in their cars. |

I think I heard it was an easier way to find all the chopped up bodies dumped in the reservation. |

Locust Grove is 1/2 block from the Millburn train station. Glen Ave, Millburn. Yes, it is illegal to ride bikes in the So Mtn. res. but I still see riders. It is unlikely that cops could/would catch them. |

Because of the switchback, it is now relatively easy to get to the lookout from the bottom of the quarry area. Try it , its a good, fun 10 minute hike that would be ruined by bikes. |

I'm not familiar with the particular trail but do know that the the most common reason for creating a switchback trail, besides the already mentioned easement of travel, is to prevent erosion. |

I believe bike riding is only banned on the trails through the woods, but is allowed on the blacktopped road area. |

Get there early on a weekend morning and you'll find lots of mountain bikers crashing through the trails in the woods. Did they close off the other paths or is the switchback just a new one? |

Who cares about bikers. They don't pose a threat as much as the dozens of unleashed dogs. Yesterday a huge black Giant Schnauzer tried to snatch a sandwich out of my 4 year-old son's hand! He was scared to death but of course no apologies from the dog owner bitch. Another one was strolling with a huge Greyhound and a little bastard. No leashes of course but big smiles of dog owner pride. One even called herself "Mami" when talking to the dogs. "Come to Mami! Stay with Mami." PATHETIC. There should be huge fines. Rant Rant! I don't mid the bikers as they are normally quite respectful. |

I don't mind the bikers or the dogs. I really dislike the open cruising. Our older kids are old enough to get what is going on and it really pisses me off that such a wonderful reserve is being spoiled. FTR I don't care about gender or orientation. I'd be just as bothered if it was a hangout for hookers. I don't understand why the cops don't patrol more. |

akb, I'm with you. The NR recently reported that cops are trying to do more. I don't know what that entails or how successful it is, but I hope it yields some results. If these were women doing the exact same things in exchange for money, people would be a lot more outraged. |

There's a good one here. I don't know how well the PDF prints, though. http://www.somocon.org/Map%20of%20SMR.htm On another note, someone was kind enough to update Wikipedia's SMR page to include the recent discovery. |

Went from Locust Grove up to lookout recently and there was no trail with paving stones. Not sure what you are talking about? All trails were dirt/leaves/rocky etc. They did repave walkway from the road up on top to the lookout but that's about it. |

I know the South Mountain Conservancy is doing a lot of work to maintain the trails and prevent erosion. I read that they got a grant. |

I stand corrected. Shoshannah is right that the Conservancy/Reservation was awarded significant grant money, which I think may have been matched by Essex County. Work on the trails is definitely due to grant $$. |

Johnny, If you can't find the referenced area from Locust Grove, go to the lookout and walk approximately 1/8 mile in a southwesterly direction, going past the old quarry. There you will find the construction work that has taken place. You may then walk down the terraced pathway to Locust Grove. |

Hi John Beltsos: My name is Claudia and I am using my friend mem's account since I don't have one of my own. I am the pathetic bitch with the bastard little dog and the greyhound (who actually belongs to mem). First of all I tried to teach my dog the "heel" command but she didn't get it. I guess the "little bastard" was smart enough to figure out that "stay with mami" (which I told my two kids when they were little (they are now 17 and 15)) meant the same. My dogs do not interfere with anybody's walking pleasure and they do not chase any wildlife. I cannot believe that you would have that much anger and hate spewing out of you towards somebody you don't even know. Why don't you get a life and figure out what makes you so miserable cause that, my friend, is really what is pathetic. By the way here is a tip from an experienced "Mami". A 4 year old shouldn't eat a sandwich while in a stoller or walking, they can choke. By the way did you notice the 50,000 used condoms that are laying around up there.... So why don't you get a life and enjoy the walk with your child instead of cursing your head of over nothing. Claudia Mattheiss South Orange, NJ cmattheiss@aol.com |

John Beltsos's flaming language aside (I will forgive him because his son was threatened by a dog--that would make me unreasonable, too), he raises an important issue around here for those of us who own dogs and want a place to take them "off leash" in a space that is safe for them and for others. We really need somewhere to run dogs off leash in the area where you don't have to be afraid of the dog bolting, or jumping on a kid, or eating a kid's sandwich. |

Totally agree. A dog park has been promised for ages. However I walk my dogs off leash only on the wooded path and should I go on the tarred path they are leashed. One do has to understand that not everybody is fond of animals and any owner has to be responsible no matter how big or small "the bastard" is. However most of the time I am asked to stop so kids as well as adults can pet the dogs. It is health for a child to learn to interact with an animal and to know how to behave properly. I have seen kids who are scarred to death at 12 and end up screaming and running and should they really be dealing with a loose and aggressive dog this could be serious trouble. Please teach your kids to ask permission to pet an animal and if they are faced with a stray teach them to look to the side or to the ground and walk away slowly. Do not stare at the dog even if they walk away. A direct stare is a sign of aggression between dogs. Should anybody be interested in doing a little course to teach your kids how to interact I'd be happy to meet you in the park one day and I'll bring the "bastards" and your kids can practise. I swear this is the last time I'll use your account mem. I am just waiting to get approved. Best Claudia |
