...and hip leather jacket at the maplewood train station as I was dropping my wife off this morning who I made sh*t his pants by telling him to throw his empty cigarette pack in the garbage and not on the ground when exiting the train....

Well I said it to him once and he ignored me. I said it to him again and he swore at me. I got out of the car and said it to him again and that is when he sh*t his pants....

How's that for environmental activism folks? Silence kills....Revolt!

Actually, that is a great story. I suppose there are reasons for the immense sense of entitlement I see lately, but I'll be damned if I can identify them.

Maybe a few public beatings will convince some other folks to 'behave' a little better?

Case-

I am not condoning public beatings ("use your head not your fist unless you are pushed" is my philosopy)even if some do in fact deserve it, just taking a stand when you think something is f**ked up.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people not taking proper care of their trash. Throwing it on the ground is telling me to f**k off," which I don't appreciate.

I understand your concerns over "entitlement" attitudes and agree. But one thing I am positive about is true "rebellion" is dead. Everyone is a wannabe these days....

Besides everyone gets on this board and vents after a situation like this occurs...Screw that, I took care of it right then and there....

As I said, silence kills....

I believe there is a new and improved littering law in the works for NJ that will carry a heavy fine for "random" littering offenses like the one perpetrated by the leather panted cigarette fiend mentioned above.

Not sure when it goes into effect..

Trash lines the street like flaws litter my character.
Trash trucks come and collect these flaws,
take them out of view, so it doesn't look dirty.
But although this takes it out of public concern,
the trash has to be taken somewhere.
You can't just will the trash out of existence,
it has to be allowed to fester and decompose.

On more than one occasion my 4 year old son and I have picked up all the trash downtown on the corner where the Bank of America is. He asked me why people didn't put their garbage in the garbage can that's RIGHT THERE, and I couldn't really think of a good way to explain a 4-year old about the sense of entitlement that pervades Maplewood, and how he'll be raised differently.

You must be speaking about my cousin Phil (above), whom I picked up this morning at the station. You need to understand about Phil. He has this chronic problem with his pockets: Some years ago, he was arrested at a mall in King of Prussia, PA. He was waiting in a long line to check out a few vintage Spoken Word albums (Ferlinghetti, Burroughs, Corso, the usual suspects...) at Peaches (you know, the music store), and he started jingling the change in his pants pocket. Well, in case you didn't know, King of Prussia is pretty conservative town, and there was this woman with two young kids standing in another long line twenty feet or so away, and she sees (but doesn't hear) Phil jingling those coins, immediately tries to cover her kids' eyes, and calls hysterically for one of the store's rent-a-cops to arrest my cousin for public perversion and liscentious behavior in the prescence of minors.

Well, needless to say, Phil was suddenly jumped upon and wrestled to the ground by a burly security guy, and he was so shocked that -- you guessed it -- he soiled his pants. Anyhow, after he and the whole situation were sorted out, he was released with an apology from Peaches. But to this day, anytime he goes anyplace, he makes sure that his pockets are kept empty, and if by chance he somehow forgets, he makes sure to immediately toss whatever is in there, to avoid yet another traumatic episode. In fact, he's become so jumpy that soiling his pants has become a fairly common thing for the poor guy. We in the family, of course, make great hay with his little "issue", and have nicknamed him "Fill 'em up Phil". But that's just a family thing.

Hope this helps...

-s.

SLK, that's almost eco-terrorism. Try this public message solution:

Grrrrr and his four year old pick it up in front of him, with the child asking, "Daddy, why don't people put their garbage in the can?"

Grrrrr, in Native American headdress, looks at the litterer, "I don't know, son," while a tear rolls down his cheek. "I don't know."

CFA-

Always one in the crowd...guess your it....

Live and let live I always say, until your actions negatively affects EVERYONE else.

I have a lot of street smarts CFA. I was not worried about this wannabe poseur....

And I didn't get in his face. He was about 15 yards away. My sixth sense told me he would change his tough guy tune as soon as I stepped out of the car. I was right.....

And I was also polite about it and until he began using vulgar language....

Don't blame me your too weak in the knees to stand up for what is right.

I guess it is much easier just to bitch about it later on the MOL board...

Great job, SLK. If enough people were willing to step up, lots of these 'quality of life' issues would soon fade away.

Though I have to admit I'm surprised by CFA's comments. It doesn't seem very tolerant or accepting of SLK's life-choice to protect the environment.

SLK, I am probably the biggest advocate of keeping my neighborhood clean but I go about it the right way. I guess that's one good thing about living in a gated community, we have a Homeowner's Associations to deal the this crap. I don't have to get in anyone's face.

"...the cost of picking up litter, nationwide, has risen to $500 million"
This makes it everybody's business.

I actually sort of agree with CFA on this one. I try not to litter, but if I did throw something on the ground and some guy got out of car yelling at me I would proably claim self defense as the reason for taking him out.

SLK -

Was it really about the litter? Or was it more about you looking for a fight and finding one?

Someone throws an empty whatever, so pick it up and toss it in the trash. if you're feeling waggish, you may remark "hey, you forget something! (wink wink)"

Here's a suggestion to make a differnce: Pick up a piece of litter every day on the way to the train and toss it in the trash.

Not only will you make our town prettier, you're an alchemist! You turn litter into trash!

Bravo!

Generally, I think it's a good thing when people confront, in a civil manner, thoughtless acts such as littering. It's best to make people who litter, make blatantly racist statements, fart loudly (take your pick) in public feel uncomfortable about their actions, rather than letting them get away with it. However this can be pretty risky too. I once gave a twenty-something kid a hard time about letting his dog take a crap in the middle of park where kids play LAX and soccer every day. Well, it was evening, there was barely anyone in the park and it turned out that the kid's poor posture obscured the fact that he was pretty damn big. His cute, shaggy dog belied the fact that he was pretty psychotic. Anyway, he turns around, starts walking towards me, asks me who I am, tells me I'm rude and begins a rant that increases in intensity with each step he takes towards me. Meanwhile, the cute dog is beginning to look less cute, and surprisingly menacing as a result of the fact that his master has been whipped into a frenzy, because of something I did. I'm backing up at this point attempting to be concilliatory, lamely with, "It's just that kid's play here."
His point was that I should mind my own business. To hammer this point home he asked, "Have you ever been maced?!" And, he began reaching into his jacket pocket. Discretion being the better part of valor, I decided on the course of action that served me so well in my formative years in Brooklyn and ran. As I ran he yelled after me , "You f---in {homophobic expression}. Despite the fact I had put a pretty good distance between him and me (and that I'm also pretty fast), I continued in my cowardice and did not admonish him for his homophobic comment. He no longer struck me as a good audience for constructive criticism. All of this brings me back to the matter of SLK getting out of his car.
SLK,
What if the kid didn't relent? Had you thought about the possibilities? The one that you seem to think is less likely, that he's capable of defending himself well, could turn out to be the case, and goading people into fights is his way of enjoying a Saturday afternoon. I've known quite a few people like this in my life. Many were scrawny looking, but had wiry strength and the advantage of being masters at the science of inflicting pain.
Sure, the Jack wannabe probably wasn't that kind of guy, but what if he doesn't relent anyway? Are you going to beat him up? Believe me, if you did and I heard about it, I certainly wouldn't lose much sleep over it. However you might find yourself in the kind of legal trouble that could adversely affect your ability to pay to live in a community like this.
Now that you have responsibilities to people other than yourself, you need to consider those consequences. Not saying you didn't. And I'm not saying I wouldn't have done the same thing, but since that experience in a park a few years back, I'm a little less bold than I used to be. Plus, now I own a home.

Joe-

Thanks for the concern but in 37 years my "street smarts" haven't failed me yet.

My grandfather always told me "to always know what is up that tree before you begin barking up it." I live by such words.

As I said before, something told me if I got out of my car he would shut up. I was right. If it escalated-who knows, but something told me it wouldn't. Like most, he was all bark.

But dude, common sense should tell you to never take on anyone with a dog. You were more macho then I ever could be...

CFA-

I have tried aquaman's passive agressive approach numerous times and have already picked up my share of other's trash over the years.

The point of me making this post is not to prove how macho I am (even though I am ). My point is that so many people vent on these boards about similar situations AFTER they happened as if they have regret not doing anything about it when they occured.

Stand up, take a stand. Silence kills.
