Please stop. No more visits, please. NO MORE. Three times in three weeks is enough (different people each time). It's bordering on harassment. Suggestions for their next visit? |

They just came by here, also. A simple "Hi" and "no thanks" from me, took about ten seconds. |

I had Mormons a few months ago... two fairly attractive women. I told them that the whole story of Joseph Smith and the golden plates seemed like a huge scam, just so he could marry as many women as he wanted. They didn't leave, so I asked them if they were married to the same guy... that pretty much took care of the issue. |

This will work: Open the door without saying a word, have someone stand behind the door out of their view(preferably immature), let them get a few words in, open your mouth & eyes as wide as you can (make sure your face looks crazy), this is when the person behind the door yells out (in their best demonic monstery death voice) "WE WORSHIP THE DEVIL, HE WANTS YOUR CHILDREN!" After a few growls shut your mouth quickly and then just stare at them without saying anything. They will leave. My cousin and I did this to them when we were about 13 yrs old, not one has been back to that house |

Ask them if they have a permit from the police department to be doing door to door solicitations. Ask them to show it to you. |

Do they need a permit or are they protected by the First Amendment's guaranty of Freedom of Religion? These are people who believe they are doing God's work. They may be annoying and I may think they are nuts, but what is wrong with NoHero's way af dealing with them? |

We take Nohero's approach and never have a problem. Sometimes I talk with them for a minute or two and explain we are quite happy with our own religious views, which usually satisfies them. When I was in college a fraternity brothers's father was a Baptist (ABC, not Southern) minister in Cambridge, Ma. He used to engage the Mormons and Witnesses in theological discussions. They usually departed rather quickly. |

I was once told that The Witnesses steered clear of houses with an American flag. Although I fly my flag for a different and more obvious reason, It sems to work. I don't know if it is a coincedence or what, but my wife and I don't get bothered. Otherwise I suggesst answering the door with a shotgun in your hand and greeting them with "Are you here from the mother ship?" |

I believe, although I could be wrong, that in South Orange a permit is required for house to house solicitations of any kind. I don't think that freedom of religion has anything to do with it. At any rate, when I ask the Jehaovah's witnesses, or any other soliciters if they have a permit, they become uncomfortable and leave.

Actually, the Jehovah's Witnesses are not coming to your house to solicit money. They are coming to spread the word which is what all Christians are supposed to do. If you are uncomfortable with them coming to your door, either do not answer or tell them that you appreciate them spreading the word but that you are happy hearing the word at your own house of worship. They are not mean spirited and they are just witnessing which is what we, who are true believers, are really supposed to do.

I know there's a lot of joking on this thread, but for goodness sake, whatever happened to civility. I'm not Christian, never have been - so being polite has nothing to do with sharing a religious mission. However, its really not too much to say, no thank you -- or even to have a conversation sometimes. Lots of good can come from people reaching out to folks they might not meet under other circumstances. And a little kindness goes a long way. Karma... Okay, now Poppa, do you need my address for that talk about beer? |

I usually just tell them I'm happy with my own religion and wish them a good day. Sometimes we have a little conversation about society but usually we wish each other a good day and they leave. I've only gotten upset with them when they used to ring my doorbell back in NYC at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning. The hours out here are much better. In a way, I admire their willingness to put up with all the rejection that they encounter on most of their calls. And if I really don't want to be bothered some times, I just don't answer the door. I've actually had some interesting conversations with some of the Witnesses. |

If you can see who it is before answering the door, take off your pants before opening the door, then play it straight. I my roomate did that once, in our apartment, during my college years. The visit was over in a matter of seconds and they never returned.

I am convinced that they are attracted to Mezuzahs(sp?). We have one, have no intention of removing it and have confirmed that similar homes get more visits in an average year. We are either polite or don't answer the door. I do wish that they would limit themselves to one ring of the bell and get the clue after that. |

Ask them if they still believe it is a literal 144,000 people who will be saved in the end of time and if so, how god picks which ones get to go heaven? i don't feel tolerate towards them because i was raised in a similiar religion and felt i had to witness and it made my high school years rather hellish (hellish, ha ha). have you ever noticed how slowly they walk between houses? i think they have to be out a certain amount of time rather than talk to a certain number of people. we have to be nice because my husband's uncle's late wife's sister is a JW and they come en masse to see us regularly. sometimes we try and hide, but the kids don't get the idea and often look out the window and make eye contact. p.s. i'm glad the donkey thing got cleared up before i made some embarrassing demands on mr. quilter! |
