Did anyone catch Ch 7's 11pm news? They led off with a piece on public sex in the SM Reservation. Nice depiction of our area. The Essex County Sheriff questioned why there wasn't more public outcry since it happens all the time and is so public. Why isn't there more public outcry on this? I've seen it discussed on MOL before, but has anything else been done about it? |

I guess because although I think that public sex in plain view in a local park such as the SM Reservation is an issue, the larger issue to me is the fact that it is a "shocking" and "breaking" news story (and yet another indictment of the lack of quality and originality of television "news"). Will the Mayor of Bogota hold a prayer vigil/press conference up in the Reservation? |

Did I hear my name being bandied about? sex, while never at Bunnys, is always welcome with the right individual at the reservation. I've always quite enjoyed sex while out and about with nature, under the blue skies, against trees, behind bushes, and most importantly, while enjoying it with someone else.

Maplewood is all about diversity. So why would these acts be shocking to anyone here? Why would Ch. 7 news find it news worthy? |

And there's no homophobia in your using the term "McCreepy" when this subject comes up, right? Boy - when all that was going on, everyone who latched onto that term screamed all over the board.... "We're not calling him 'creepy' because he's gay. We're doing it because of the corruption. We don't care that he's gay. It has nothing to do with that. We just LUUUUV gay people. It's the corruption. Honest." Yeah. |

"Why isn't there more public outcry on this?" Because we've come to accept criminal behavior as being part of living in an urban area like this. |

Greentree, Aren't heterosexual men who cheat on their wives creepy too? I love gay people (just not at the S.M. reservation ), but McGreevy did enough to earn the nickname Mc Greedy before he even came out of the closet. Haven't you met any creepy people who happen to also be gay? It is possible. J.B. RE: Sex in the reservation. There should be designated days, like the adult swim at he pool! Seriously, THAT is about homophobia. If highschoolers were sneaking up there and having heterosexual sex, (they are) it wouldn't be news. |

Outdoor sex has been going on at the Reservation since the 1940's. It's long been a meeting place for gay men. Sex happens in the woods and in cars too. Gay sex and Hetero sex both occurs at SMR. Some (smart) meet there and take their action somewhere private. People also go there to see the view, and hike the woods, see the falls. Kids go to smoke, drink and get high, and yes... for sex! Some have previously dumped dead bodies in SMR. Were any of these things mentioned in the news report too? I missed the story on Ch 7 ! When is the Dog run going to be completed in the Reservation? |

I am referring specifically to linking names with the topic at hand. She did not say McGreedy; that is indicative of corruption or, well, greed. "McCreepy" did not come up until he came out. Before that, I agree; he was called "McGreedy". People can be creepy for all kinds of reasons. If you link it with things like sexuality, disability (I've heard that) religion, age, etc., it is bigotry. No one (that I've heard) has ever said "Jim McGreevy picks his nose in public." That would be creepy. Being gay is not. Get it? |

For the record Bunnies is a wonderful family restaurant that welcomes children. It also has a fantasitc sports bar and is clearly the place to watch a game. I just want to clarify in case anyone was confused by Hank Zona's rather nasty comments about a place many of us on MOL know and love. |

O.K. I know SMR has this reputation as a gay cruising place, and it wouldn't suprise me if folks of all ages, races, religions and sexual orientations were using it as a place to go "neck." Folks have been doing that kind of thing for generations. So here's my question. When and where is this rampant public sex taking place? I've spent my fair share of time in SMR--although it's usually in the morning and I generally stick to the walks and roads. I've seen people sitting in parked cars, I've seen the used condoms (super gross) lying around, I've even seen one guy who's clearly and regularly advertising the "package" in his shiny bike shorts with no underwear (or other support of any kind), but I have NEVER, ever seen anyone in the actual act itself? Not saying it doesn't happen, but if it's as prevelant as some folks like to say, I think I would have stumbled on someone at least once by now! |

Sorry for the thread drift, but forget the sex: what about the dead bodies they occasionally find in there? My wife was commenting on that just last week... remember the last one? As I recall it was some woman (or most of her) in a suitcase, right? Barely any reaction at all in the news. It was weird. I think my wife is uncomfortable with the lack of public interest in the SMR dead-body thing. Probably because every time it comes up, I ask her if we still have that big Travelpro suitcase up in the attic.

meandtheboys I had an unfortunate experience at the reservation about 2 years ago. I was walking with my two daughters and we heard some rustling in the woods. I told my kids to be very quiet becasue there was probably a deer sloe by. I pointed them to the direction of where I heard the noise. Standing about 15 feet from us was a guy with combat boots, pants down to knees, pleasuring himself while holding a gay porn magazine in the other hand. I stood there in shock for a few seconds grabbed my kids and got out of the situation very quickly. |

No one is denying that it happens or that you saw it. Well, there are a couple of posters who may join us shortly to refute that. But, I digress..... Anyway, I think that the issue here is the extent of the different kinds of things that go on and focusing in on one. And, Straw, what do you mean that I can't have sex at Bunnies? Didn't someone mention something about adult swim hour? |

It's likely occurring at dusk or later....too many people during the daylight hours. So, why don't the cops just park themselves in the parking lots where I assume most of the activity is occurring??? |

Millie, I do recall that incident and you posting about it. FWIW, when deer move in the woods they are pretty much silent. It's an amazing thing, really, considering how large they are. When you hear rustling, it's generally squirrels and chipmunks. (Or men "pleasuring themselves!") |

greenie- I didn't know he was gay back then. Didn't know until he announced it. Didn't care either. I picked up on things friends of mine who live in Woodbridge said about him. Can't reacall the exact incident because it was many years ago (but I do know it had nothing to do with sex), I replied 'that's creepy.' Since then I called him 'Mccreepy.' It didn't stop me from voting for him though. Don't know why you would think I'm homophobic. |

The videos on Ch 7 news (blurred in the appropriate areas) showed a scene with ample sunlight. Of course, that could mean 6 or even 7pm, but regardless, other people are walking around up there and shouldn't need to see that. I don't think it is a question of being straight, gay, or young teen. It's not something I think should be done in public places. You can argue how "public" the reservation is, but it sounds like many people have stumbled on these scenes up there. I wouldn't mind so much if they pitched a tent (literally!!) and did it in there. |

While a lot of stuff pertaining to sex goes on in the reservation I don't think anything is as obvious as the pickups and sometimes sex along the loop road. Sorry, but I don't think finding that unacceptable is being anti-gay.

I agree with Mr. Big Poppa and Bob K--I don't care if they're gay, straight, young, old, whatever. I wouldn't want to stumble upon them with my kids or even if I was alone or with a friend or my husband. They should find someplace private. I resent the fact that their behavior makes me reluctant to take my kids hiking on the trails. If I wouldn't want my kids watching a movie showing that, why would I want them to see it in person? |

I have to agree with BobK as well. It's more along the lines of inappropriate behavior (in terms of being in a public place, where children could see, etc.) than being homophobic. As far as our former governor is concerned, here's a novel idea: Why not just call him McGreevey?? We all get the references and innuendos in context. You don't need to undermine your credibility by creating the impression that you dislike the man for his sexuality as opposed to his politics, money management, etc. If you have something to say, say it; don't hide behind nicknames. |

I don't think anyone has claimed that it is homophobic to say that public sex acts on the reservation are unaccepatable. I think everybody here is a bit unhappy with the idea of stumbling across copulating couples while walking the dog or the kids in the reservation. Singling out gay sex as opposed to heterosexual sex in public as "creepy" or calling our ex-Governor creepy because of his gay-ness is homophobic. I believe that was Greenetrees point (though god knows she doesn't need any help defending herself). A lot of the sex at the reservation is gay sex, hence it makes the news. That could be considered homophobic, IMHO. As for the comparison with prostitutes selling heterosexual sex........well, they would be very likely to be arrested for the illegal behavior. Lewd acts in public are also illegal, and the fact that the police don't care to address the issue although it has become really intrusive is disappointing. But if people complain enough, action will be taken. Call the police next time. |
