As MJH and others say, it is wrong for sex to take place in a public place like this, especially on the loop road where there is a much higher probability of being seen by people who prefer not to watch, and the cops know about it, but they are waiting for people to raise a hue and cry before they do anything about it? Perhaps the hue and cry should be about the behavior (or lack thereof) of the Sherrif's Department. | ||

ESL, that is a good point you make. The sheriff might mean that having sex in a public place is considered an offense of lewd behaviour, which isn't very serious. So, I guess they don't focus their efforts there. However, he probably is alluding to the need for a squeaky wheel from the public to help gain additional resources or make the case to redirect his resources. | ||

Got to tell this story -- Last weekend a group of about 30 Cub Scouts were camping in the reservation. We took a "night hike" up to the abandoned road to star gaze. As our whole group rounded a corner, imagine ~30 loud, excited, 6 - 11 year olds, with flashlights, etc, we encountered a rather steamed up car. Being a pretty big group, we blocked off the road -- this poor couple literally had no way to avoid us for several minutes! But I think most of the kids were oblivious... Pete | ||

I bet abc did this report because one of their anchors lives in Maplewood. Although this has been going on for decades up there she was probably shocked by it. I saw the news report on Channel 7 last night, and was not happy about South Mountain Reservation, public sexual acts, and Maplewood mentioned in the report and just about in the same sentence. The video was clearly filmed in day ligtht, and there were several guys gathered (tho faces and naughty bits were blurred). People, get a hotel room. | ||

I thought the Essex County Sheriff came off looking pretty bad. Why isn't there more outcry from his own office? The report claimed that 87 men (or something close) have been arrested since the beginning of the year in the Reservation. That's not too impressive when you realize that's about one every other day. With the amount of activity up there, if the County were really cracking down the number could be much higher. | ||

Me and the boys, you have been walking in the wrong areas. The hot spots are in the back of the road loop. Heterosexuals on the back left and homosexuals on the back right. Heterosexuals bring blankets and look like they are off on a picnic outing. A little more discrete but easy to spot because of the bright colors of the cloth. Sex in the woods is so old school! Peter Magic is right. Plenty of hetero couples have been busted in parked cars over the years and no one makes a stink about that. Put your clothes on and take off is the standard warning. But if it's man on man action, then the sherrif is coming! Look, these things happen. Should people have sex in the woods? I would prefer them not to, but I don't live in the woods and can't see what's going on there. What I care about is possible molestations and rapes in those woods. I don't want a grown man (or woman), forcing a child into having sex in the woods. I don't want a woman walking the paths with her Ipod on, being assaulted in the woods. | ||

The Sheriff is a dud, and this whole "Sex in the Res" schtick is just a self-promotion. What an idiot- like we don't have bigger crime issues than that in this county. Ask him how his office is dealing with gang violence and other real threats- he'll surely put out some BS response and make a photo-op. When Peter Shapiro was county executive he ended the practice of them going into the woods to entrap gay men by pretending to want to have sex with them. It was so bad that there was one county police officer who would bump into guys and say they had tried to touch him. For a long time the woods, itself, was off limits. Supposedly, a citizen has to make a complaint for people to be arrested for having sex in the woods. Yes, it is a long standing tradition for couples to have sex out in nature. My own mom and dad *now in their late 70s" love to tell a story how they were caught by a policeman, parked in the woods and making whoppie. Luckily, the officer was my mom's uncle and he never told her parents. However, when people are not "deep" in the woods and can be seen by children and ordinary citizens it does present a problem. There have been problems of exhibitionists who purposely expose themselves. I don't know what the solution is or how to control the police force if they get involved. It is way to easy to get back into the entrapment game. | ||

Just saw this thread and had to post cause most people here obviously don't realize that the issue is not so much that anybody is having sex gay, straight or whatever. The issue is that these are not just people having sex but a highly active prostitution market. Yes there are male and female prositutes up there with the females being mostly very young girls giving BJ's in the cars. The gay prostitution is alot more active and aggressive up there. Pay attention next time when you drive around the loop..some cars are parked regularly and some are parked reversing into the spot. That's the signal of who is who. I have no problem with people having sex outdoors but I do find it incredibly gross to see that some of the john's there have kids car seats in the back. One would have to assume they are married with kids but need to get a little of the other flavor on the side. Mem and I recently encountered bloody mens underwear while walking our dogs there. Used condoms are all over the place and frankly there are certain paths I would not take because I know I will encounter some activity. It does happen in broad daylight and on a daily basis. The girls are picking the guys up at a different location and just use the parking lot just like they use the Mountain Station parking lot at night when the res is closed. Some of these girls look like they are under 18 and it is equally gross to see a fat old fart sitting in the car with a young girl and getting pissed cause I pull up right next to them (on purpose) and take my good old time to unload my three dogs. This is why I found it incredible that alot of people jumped on my back for walking up there with my dogs off-leash when they are stepping over condoms and parking next to prostitutes. The State Police is well aware of it (the town does not police the res) and it's a joke if they pretend they don't. They drive through the loop but unless they actually catch somebody in the act they can't do much. I actually pitched the idea of mounted (no punt intended) cops for the res since they would be able to canvas the wooded areas much better. Nothing like being confronted by a real stud (the horse) to end a paid for tet-a-tet. Hey I'd love to have that job to ride around in the res on a horse and get paid for it. Would quit my office job in a second for it but alas I found I am too old to be excepted as an officer. | ||

Moose yes the Mountain Station Parking Lot. SO REf moose heard right. I live right next to it on the Vose Avenue side. There used to be a time when the lot had 6 or 7 cars there at night and I didn't understand what was going on cause I saw the same few girls but always different guys. I started getting pissed when I ran into a guy having sex leaning against his truck (Not NJ Transit but a local business no less) and therefor his a** facing my yard. Now it was 8pm and in February. This was a couple of years ago and let me tell you I got really mad. Not only did I chew both of them out but I wrote down the name of the local business and the conveniantely place phone number right of the side of hte truck and called the owner the next day. To put a dent in the activity I make a point of walking really close to the cars when I walk my dog and look right into peoples faces. That has made a big difference. Since the South Orange police uses the lots as a stationing place where they wait (I guess since alot of stolen cars get take down to the Orange border)it has cut down alot. But every once in awhile I come out of my fenced in area and a couple of cars take off that were parked right there facing my fence. I guess this happens in every bigger parking lot and I am sure that these people didn't stop but just relocate. | ||
