Yesterday at about 3:30-4pm my boyfriend and I were in the Reservation walking his puppy. We started walking on what looked like a nice trail. We made it about 50 feet and then a man walked up to us and told us to turn around because we were on a “men only trail” and unless we liked voyeurism we should really turn around because we would be really shocked at what we were about to see. As we were going to a different trail we looked back at the trail we started and saw several men walking out or running on the trail. We got back to our car and watched 2 different men come park and walk back towards the trail/woods by themselves (some in work cloths). We ended up going to a different trail but the whole time we were concerned if some how our new trail would end up connecting with the “men’s only trail”.
First off I think it is so tacky and disgusting that this is taking place in a family area especially with the new dog park, which we have seen an increase on the trails with many being families. I don’t care with what one does behind ones own door but forest orgy’s in a public park has crossed the line!! I know that a lot of teenagers go to the reservation to drink, drugs and sex but they are immature but for grown adults to be doing this is be on me.

No really, that's totally gross. I'd be outraged too.

Very, very, very old story.

Although the twist of rampant, daytime, hordes is a new one.

I have known for a long time that men would go up to the reservation to look for someone to hook up ( by the way the headlights faced), but I never thought I could be walking on a trail in the daytime and come across it in the open woods! Why don’t we have cops/park patrol in the reservation monitoring/watching what is going on? I know I have been stopped on the road on my bike by a cop to make sure I knew not to ride on the dirt trails (I did). Personally I think riding a bike (I know it causes erosion, but still) on a trail is nothing to what is going on in there! Maybe if bikes where allowed on the trails there would be less “other” activity to happen because more people would use the trails.

Yuck! They must have heard about the new doggie-style park and swung by to try it out...

Seriously, the county should do something about this. It's not cool to be tromping through the Res with the kiddies and catching a couple of horndogs in flagrante delicto.

Oh c'mon. I find it totally titallating.

If you aren't into gay sex then don't walk around in the park at night. If you have to ask WHY men are doing this, then you really need an education.

I'm sorry I've heard you all whine about this numerous times, and while I am sure that no one wants this in their backyard, I would like to think that the cops have something better to do with their time.

Alleygater-

You are being sarcastic right?

3:30-4PM is not night.

And it is not a question of WHY men (or ANYONE else) are doing this but WHEN and WHERE, which is totally inappropriate, especially near a family area/dog park.

Anyone (men/woman/gay/straight) should be able to take a stroll through the park and not have to worry about individuals not being able to keep it in their pants (gay or straight).

This is a pet peeve I have been having lately. If I don't allow two men to hump each other on my front lawn, then I must be uptight, sexually repressed and a bigot.

Yeah, seriously cattail, stop being so uptight...(sarcasm off)..

It is called common courtesy and respect Alley, learn it, live it

First off, thank you for your option but we were not walking around the park at night this was a 3:30-4 PM! If they do it at night that’s one thing families are not in the park. It is a park for the public to enjoy walking, running, and nature (ect) but one thing it is not is a park to walk in to a forest orgy. All trials are open to public, what gives any sexual orientation the right to claims one trail over the other? I know why men do this but I think the time and place are inappropriate. Once again just my option.

As for the cops having better things to do with their time?

I would hope that cops have something better to do but what are they truly doing? Here are a few things I have noticed…
- How often do you see a cop car patrolling the speeders on South Orange Ave, Wyoming Ave or Valley? Even by the grade schools. There are cops helping the kids cross the street but that’s it? Even parents drop off their kids and speed away as their own child is crossing. People act like these roads are speed ways!
-With all the headlight stealers in this area shouldn’t there be a cop or so patrolling every so often to deter the thief’s? How many people do you know who’s headlights where stolen from their driveway? I know many! Is it the car owners fault because they want a nice car?
- Not only patrolling for headlight stealers but what about burglars? If you didn’t know there is a big increase in the amount of home break in on Ridgewood rd from Millburn to West Orange. Why are cops patrolling more? ( I am not saying have a cop on ever street but during the night when most crimes happen have the cops drive up and down streets so their presence is felt.)
- And if cops/ county cops patrolled the reservation more people might go and enjoy the nature with out wondering what they will see or find (body, ect.).

All in all in my own option I only see cops handing out parking tickets. So please tell me what they are doing with their time. (I truly am interested because if I knew what they were so busy with I could understand why I don’t see them doing the above).

It might bring some comfort to know the County is in the process of building a new Police Sub Station at the top of the S Turns just before Pleasant Valley Way. It looks as if they plan to bring back the Mounted Unit because there are 6 or so stalls for horses.

This comes (cums?) up on MOL every so often.

There used to be a separate Essex County Park Police force. It was put under the control of the Sherrif's Department and renamed the Essex County Police. The remnants are now being absorbed by the Sherrif's Department. The only time I have seen the County Police is when they set up speed traps on Cherry Valley between SO Avenue and Northfield Avenue, which was fairly often this summer.

As a proto-libertarian I believe if it feels good, do it. However, to paraphrase some long dead judge, "freedom stops at the other guys nose."

I completely agree with the point that we should be able to go on all the trails.

Hooowever, you obviously don't go into the Reservation very much if you're SHOCKED by this. I workout up there quite frequently and there are sections where I won't go on my own. And let me tell you, it's not just in the afternoon, it's 24/7.

Didn't all the single men sitting around in cars seem fishy to you?

Also, the guys wandering around in khaki pants and loafers in the woods?

it was really annoying the time that i was walking my pups in the reservation and i came upon a guy and gal making out against a tree with her top pulled up to expose her breasts. i just snickered a little and then got over it. BIG DEAL. if kids were with me, wouldn't it be better for them to hear what i had to say about what they were doing than getting all of their information from their uninformed friends and schoolmates? as an adult, one can easily be on the lookout for these kinds of things and just walk the other way if they suspect something while walking in the reservation. what kind of person would be SHOCKED at this kind of stuff...i mean really.

so you say, "...what kind of person would be SHOCKED at this kind of stuff...i mean really."

When did we suddenly become an "anything goes in **public**" society? If I just go around the corner(of a building, a street, an aisle in a farmer's market) and suspect or see something possibly offensive, I have to look the other way or go in another direction ?! Just because there are trees in the way, doesn't make it a private act.

There's a difference between free speech and free romantic/sexual behavior, whether it's with a man, or a woman, or just by yourself... That's the issue for me.

And yes, you shouldn't have to be ready at a moment's notice to explain to your 8 year old, 15 year old, or 3 year old or whatever age what they just "saw" if you aren't ready to broach that subject. I'll do it when I'm good and ready, thanks, not when we're on a hunt for rocks or leaf patterns.

we didn't just suddenly become an anything goes in public society...this stuff has been going on in any woods (away from the public) probably since the beginning of time. i didn't say you HAD to look away or go in another direction...you may or may not choose to if you come upon something that bothers you IN THE RESERVATION...that is your decision. the point is that this isn't a gay men only problem and if the potential for running into "amour" in the reservation is something that worries you, don't go too deeply into the woods. that's all.

can you say indignant?

Can you say public? And indecency? That's what *I'm* talking about.

I don't care about orientation--W/W, m/m, W/M, M/W, North, South, West, East, right side up, right side down, slightly canted, whatEVER--that's not the issue. Public is public and private is private unless we change those codes and mores.

Look, it would be totally gross if they were straight, old, young, WHATEVER.

Just because it's been going on a while doesn't mean it isn't shocking to a person who might not be expecting it.
You're treating cattail like there's something wrong with her for having emotions about a quite RUDE encounter. The reservation belongs to everyone--and some people obviously don't respect the fact that they are sharing a park, where the expectation SHOULD be that rules of decorum apply--it's a public space.

Are you saying that the reservation sould be some kind of lawless zone? Let's say drug dealers arrive to help the 24-7 cruisng along. (And NO, I'm NOT saying gays in parks = drugs.) Should there be no "shock" because illicit things were already going on there, so what do you expect? Just don't go there? Well, I bet you're not saying THAT, but you come off that way. (You know who you are.)

Maybe shocked is the wrong word. Like should I be shocked when a gang member is assasinated at the end of my street? Nah, I live less than a half-mile from Newark. I guess I'll have to accept that some folks just don't know how to act regardless of race/age/gender/nationality/disability/sexual orientation.

Never surprised; often disappointed.

If it had happened to me, I would have been shocked.

The trick is to actively combat these things, not to let them get like this.

I guarantee you that each piece of trash that cattail met up there has a permanent residence that is not the reservation. And that it would be easier, and legal, for them to have their little rendevous at their own private residences.

We were not walking deep in the woods we were on the trail that runs next to road. Deep in the woods is one thing but by the parking?

How is shocked overreacting? We have gone on allot of trails and go often and have never experienced anything like this. We like to take all different trails to see more of the park. So we tried a different part and the trails in the area. Should I keep to one trail because people can't keep it in their pants? No. they should go pleasure them self’s how ever which way they please somewhere else because I am using the park for when I looked last was the reason for the park, but maybe I am wrong?

As for why we were shocked well there are many reasons and having a random man approach us as we were enjoying the trail to tell us about what was ahead was a little shocking and unexpected. Personally I am happy he stopped us, but you know you hear stories about what happens up there but truly sometimes you don’t believe everything. From all of the stories I heard I thought the guys would get together in their cars not the woods at 4 pm. Call me what ever you want for being shocked but as a person with morals I think shocked was the perfect way to put it!

cattail-

i always found it interesting that the individuals who would freak out the most over having their behavior regulated in the bedroom have no problem imposing their own perverted sense of morality upon the public.

Two guys banging each other in a public park? How dare you get upset with them! How dare you are shocked!

Well, at least we now know where Alleygater is if he hasn't posted for a while...
