"A million thanks to Vic and Jerry. In a job which few of us would ever tackle, they did it well; they got the town on track to be even better; and when tough decisions had to be made, they did the right thing. "
--Nohero

"Vic and Jerry tooks steps to comply with state law by conducting the reval. They were obviously as surprised as anybody by the impact. However, anybody that believes that:

1. Vic and Jerry are responsible for the tax increases for some or for the high property tax levels

OR

2. Believes that the new town council will have much impact on our property taxes

is seriously deluded."
--Tjohn

I can't say it any better.

So, what's the Joint Meeting? why should that matter to a Maplewood resident? why was David chosen? and why would he be such a good candidate?

I have to agree with anon. I think Vic and Jerry did all that they could for this town. Our taxes would have gone up no matter who was in office. Do you think that Vic and Jerry wanted their taxes raised also? They live in Maplewood as well. Jerry even lives on the Westside which was the most affected, right? Wake up.

PS. I miss Jerry's posts on here.

Vic's taxes went down...not up.

I hope you (Straw) are not implying that the reval was done BECAUSE Vic's taxes were going to go down! I know you're not that stupid.

jeffl,

This issue "his taxes" cost Vic the election. Is he a crook????Hell no, would it have been in his best interest as a Politician not to have his taxes reduced during the reval?? Hell yes.

Jeffl, I may not be that stupid, but you on the other hand...

So I guess he should have artificially inflated his taxes so they went up instead of down?!

Strawberry:

I am sure I am going over old ground, but how would you propose reducing taxes in Maplewood?

I have attended CBAC meetings, Town meetings, and talked to a lot of people, and I do not see easy ways to reduce property taxes without the State changing the way schools are funded. Do you have the answer I am looking for?

Our local tax re-burdening is the result of Midtown direct and executives with barrels of cash they didn't want to risk in the securities market. I know. I'm one of them. If what you're discussing is a re-evaluation, there's nothing politicians can do about the results legally. However, for them to intervene and change results would be illegal. It's all mathematics so charges of fixing things is ridiculous.

Straw devotes many pixels to Vic's taxes going down, but he seems oddly unaware that Jerry's nearly doubled. What's that smell, a vague odor of hypocrisy?

I second Melidere's request. While you're at it, hold your head under water.

Jerry's went up 7 grand and he mentions it in the Star Ledger article where I was also quoted..

The bottom line is this and again this is all ancient history but I'll say it again.

Jerry Ryan told a group of people in town including myself that our taxes would not be increased because of the reval. He never understood what it was he was doing to us with the reval, and neither did Vic.

Both were in over their heads, and as a result both were elected out of office. To be honest, I'm not convinced they've been replaced with people we're better off with, but time will tell.

I ask again, what would you suggest to lower taxes? Specifics, please. Or do you only complain??

I really don't think Vic and Jerry expected the fall out from the reval. I think, using my crystal ball, that they expected taxes to go down in Hilton and east of Boyden, but I don't think they expected the amounts taxes went up on the hill. Again, some of this was their methods and timing, especially doing the Wyoming/Jefferson area last, well after the spring sales had closed.
I don't think they did this to get votes. I think that they thought it was the right thing to do. The Hilton area now has the strongest housing price increases in town and this has got to be good for the town as a whole.

The problem is that now the taxes are about as out of whack as they were before the reval, accoridng to the work LSeltzer did a couple of months ago. There are not enough sales in the Jefferson area to have much of an effect on the CD. Hilton now, as in the past, really controls how and when assessments are done because of most of the area is one VCS and there are a lot of sales.

Jerry said the reval isn't a mechanism to increase tax revenue. He made a factual statement. A reval is a redistribution of the taxes, not an increase in overall revenues to the town. If you can point out where he said *your* taxes wouldn't go up, point us to it.

Here's where to start looking:

And here's the outcome of the court battle about it:

It was from Jerry's lips to my ears...If Jerry wants to argue I'll remind him it was at Centanni's and was directed at a group of people who were behind the fair tax lawsuit.

I think Dave was there that night as well, but I'm not sure you were still there when Jerry arrived.

Again, ancient history and if Jerry ever runs again he deserves to be judged on his record that spanned 11 years.

oh, and mfpark...

I have no idea how to lower the taxes. I do know that Ed May said he did and still wasn't voted in. Maybe those who voted against the guy who said he has a solution should answer your question.

Melidere, nice to see a post from you again. I've been missing you.

Jerry and Vic said over and over that taxes in the township overall wouldn't go up because of the reval and of course this was the case. Obviously someone's taxes were going to go up or there wouldn't have been a need for the reval. Straw is either making his story about Jerry up or the distinction about individual and overall taxes was a little too subtle for him.
