Why is it so hard to find a man worth committing to? I hereby offer Tookie's Law: Any man over 35 not married has to be a loser, and unmarried for a reason. The nice guys are all wimps, and the manly ones are all jerks. Why is it that although I look for someone to love me hard, all I can find is someone who hardly loves me?

Its so strange - I guess its only the younger guys who enjoy the company of pushy, whiny women.

Tookie's Law is a pitiful cry for help... well, not help - maybe attention, or just confirmation that "it can't be me! Its all the MEN that are at fault!".

If you spend less time 'looking for someone to love you hard' and more time simply living your life, the 'desperate' stench will fade and you'll possibly find someone.

Millitants make lousy lovers!

Case: You have my attention. I have a friend in your same boat. The issue she has is that she is "looking" She tells me many stories of the dates she endures, and the rejections as well as the non-interests. I listen intently, because not only is she a good person that deserves love, she will offer it at 100%. I also tell her to play a little hard to get, to make them come after you. there are rules for this, but I am sure you know a few. I reccomend that she goes to places that she enjoys, joins clubs that will be of interest to her. In this regard, right off the bat, there will be something in common. It is an interview, the preverbial date, and once you know what you want and don't want the process moves along quicker. I wish you the best in your search. If you need to chat anytime, pls feel free to email me, I can offer sound advice and some insights.

You know, I was really touched. I was totally going to take you up on this, when I remembered that my wife has some 'issue' with me dating... otherwise I would have loved to talk with you and get some insight.

Seriously though - with such a low number of posts, this is probably YET ANOTHER board member playing the anonymous game. Which is fine - its interesting, anyway

Carrie:

I like the idea of a "preverbial" date--sums up those awkward first conversations so well.

"Hi."
"Hi"
"Nice night, huh?"
"Yes"
"Ha ha"
"Ha ha"

I rarely get past preverbial to actual verbal dates. Although I have had some adjectivial dates and once even made it to an intransitive verbal date.

Case -

Lol!

Fight the Power,

I'm beginning to think you're a mole - on one hand you're the political activist, a week later you're a lonely lady battlin' the bulge and lookin' for a good man.

The juxtaposition of an in-the-know political wonk and vulnerable lonely heart in 20 posts just seems "off" to me.

The difference is that women like me focussed on our career because we were told that we could have it all - family, career, everything. Then we turn 35 (or 40, or even, gulp, 45) and we realize that is just anohter lie we have to swallow. For men, it is just because they want to avoid commitment.

Maybe the men you encounter don't mind wide bodied women as much as they do norrow minded ones?

For example:

Has anyone considered the demographic ramifications if this attracts the Jewish brooklyn crowd? Homes with 12 to fifteen kids? A gradual influx of orthodox until they are politically potent enough to sway local elections with bloc voting, when they will decide to defund public schools, and relax zoning rules so they can build mega-houses in which to cram their broods? Do we want Maplewood to become Crown Heights?

Tookie Baby, if that's the way you present yourself in a first post, you must really be a scream on a first date.

Sorry darling, you made your bed, I'm thinking there's probably some reason you're lying in it all by your lonesome.

Fight
You think you ran into a gem of a guy. A few years ago I started to date someone I later found out never had a girlfriend. ***I*** was his first girlfriend, and he was 39 years old! And even worse, he had only one other date in his whole life.

If that wasn't bad enough, he was in debt up to his ears. To the extent he was on the verge of having his truck repossessed, all his utilities shut off; and evicted from his apartment. His car insurance even got canceled. It was so bad the debt consolidation program he was in threw him out!!! He couldn't even afford food at times.

Then to top it all off his mother forced him to choose between me and his family for no other reason then I had some physical limitations and she insisted I'd be a burden to him...

Case: Dating ( your significant other) while you are married to him or her is still a positive way to keep the sparks flying.

Lydia & Marian: Even if they have an "aka" it is a subject worth discussing if it is of interest to others.

Johnny: To answer your question:"So what's the problem with women over 35 that are still single?" IMO: There is no problem unless you don't want to be single.

Bill: kind of harsh, don't you think?

Just the Aunt: Whew! Quite story, What a "Loser"

Mike: Me too.

Tookie:

Your initial question in and of itself is self- defeating. If you honestly believe that you will never find someone to love you, chances are you won't.

You need to begin addressing your underlying problem by undergoing an attitude adjustment. If you are able to like yourself better and present yourself to others in a more positive, self-confident manner, you may find that others respond accordingly.

It wouldn't hurt either to get out more and join in activities where single men in the age range you are seeking are apt to be.

John: Tookie's gender is not an issue here. Male or female, Tookie could still be looking for male companionship/love interest.

If it was a psychology class, I think it would be sex/love. If it was taught at the online school Trump University, I'd have to guess money/sex.

When the Night has been too lonely
and the Road has been too Long
And you think that Love is only
For the Lucky and the Strong
Just remember in the Winter
Far beneath the bitter Snow
Lies the Seed that with the Sun's Love
In the Spring, becomes the Rose

"Why is it that although I look for someone to love me hard, all I can find is someone who hardly loves me?"

Honey, you need to get you some circumcised love. Some payes-growin', kippa-wearin', Chasidic luuuuv.

Get yourself out under the eruv--it works just like mistletoe--and, while reciting:

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth
for his love is better than wine...

...you just shake that flabby thang.

Shake it, Tookie, shake it!
